The Annual JB Chingay Parade for 2014 fell on February 20, Thursday. Some of the images captured when this parade passed through a popular stretch from Jalan Yahya Awal, Jalan Ayer Molek, and past the downtown Post Office.
This year's street parade is one of the events and festivals of Visit Malaysia Year 2014. Unlike the Singapore Chingay Parade, this is a Free event for all to experience and enjoy at the street level.

Chingay Festival, Johor Bahru, Malaysia 2019
The Johor Chingay Street Parade has been an annual tradition of the Johor Old Temple since 1800s. For Chinese residents in Johor, the Chinese New Year only ends once the “Parade of the Deities” is completed. This spectacular event, which was declared a National Cultural Heritage in 2012, has emerged as a cultural carnival and a tourist attraction.
The celebrations begin with a lighting-up ceremony at Xing Gong at Jalan Ulu Ayer Molek for temple deities on the 18th day of the first lunar month. The festive mood continues over the next four days as throngs of devotees converge at Xing Gong where they also enjoy Chinese traditional operas and musical shows performed in the five dialects – Hakka, Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese and FooChow. The celebration peaks on the 21st day when city roads are closed for the Chingay street parade (25 February 2019). Carried by devotees from the five Chinese associations, the deities would join this parade accompanied by lion dancers, dragon dancers, cultural dancers and brass bands that may take more than seven hours to complete.

Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple (Chinese: 柔佛古廟) known as Old Temple (Chinese: 古廟) by the locals, is a Chinese temple located in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Located at downtown Johor Bahru of Jalan Trus, the temple is flanked by modern skyscrapers. This temple is one of the oldest structures in Johor Bahru. The temple is a place of worship and a symbol of unity among Five Chinese Dialect Groups which are Teochew, Hoklo (Hokkien), Cantonese, Hakka and Hainan.
In 2007, a Documentary Series called My Roots featured the temple in the episode Grand March with the Deities.
History
The Johor Bahru Old Chinese temple.
The temple was built during the 19th Century by then Head of Ngee Heng Company led by Tan Hiok Nee and various Chinese community leaders.[1]
Although there are no actual records regarding the completion of the temple, the plaque and the century-old bronze bell located in the temple shows that the temple is around 130 years old.
In 1995 / 1996, it underwent a major renovation at a cost of MYR1.5 million. Much of its cultural aura was preserved, and important relics such as the century-old bronze bell, joss stick pot and wooden tablet remain.

The temple hosts 5 Deities. There are:
Yuan Tian Shang Di (元天上帝) (大老爷)
Hong Xian Da Di (洪仙大帝) (洪仙公)
Gan Tian Da Di (感天大帝)
Hua Guang Da Di (华光大帝)
Zhao Da Yuan Shuai (赵大元帅)
Each of the deities are separately worshipped by Teochew, Hoklo (Hokkien), Cantonese, Hakka and Hainan people.

A Century Old Malaysian Tradition
In other parts of Malaysia, Chinese New Year celebrations usually end on the 15th day—the Chap Goh Meh--of the Chinese New Year. Not so in Johor, where it ends with a bang with the Johor Bahru Chingay Festival—a three-day long festival that begins 20 days into the new year.
If you have ever been to a Chingay celebration in Johor Bahru, you'll probably agree that calling one of Malaysia's largest and grandest festivals would not be an exaggeration. Every year on the 21st day of the first Chinese lunar month, the Johor Bahru Tiong Hua Association organizes the colourful procession that, most recently, had attracted over 300,000 people to watch the event. People come from other states and often other countries simply to catch a glimpse the celebration.
A festival over 140 years old, the Johor Bahru Chingay parade features Chinese cultural displays such as Chinese Opera, lion dance, flag pole performances, dragon dance, float procession and many more. Chingay, meaning true art in Hokkien, is a spectacular showcase of Johor Bahru's rich Chinese culture. During the celebration, 5 deities, each representing one of the 5 Chinese communities of Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka and Hainan, are brought out from their home in the Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple to join the procession around the city centre. When the deities are brought out, devotees can be heard shouting heng ah, huat ah, ong ah! which means luck, prosperity and auspiciousness respectively. During the procession, many spectators also scrambled in attempts to touch the deities for good luck. Many can also be seen lighting up joss sticks for prayers.
