On the 5th November 2017, historic Murray River paddle steamers, PS Ruby (Based at Wentworth, NSW) and visiting PS Marion (Based at Mannum, SA), travel under the table lift bridge out of Wentworth, NSW for a pleasant evening cruise up the Darling River.
Both vessels were celebrating their respective birthdays, PS Marion now 120 years old and PS Ruby 110 years old, and this cruise coincided with a weekend long event involving the two paddle steamers. PS Marion spent 13 days travelling upstream of the Murray River from its home port of Mannum, SA, to visit PS Ruby in Wentworth.
This is was the first time in as many years that both paddle steamers have traversed underneath the Wentworth table lift bridge to cruise up the Darling River.

Perry Sand Hills, Wentworth NSW
A very short drive from our Elddis base at Mildura we ventured out to the famous Perry Sandhills. On the edge of the flood plain that includes Thegoa Lagoon are these ancient sandhills and they include Aboriginal cultural heritage areas. The sandhills’ unique features have have led them to be used as a backdrop in many films and television shows.
According to geologists, the Perry Sandhills originated after an ice age (40,000 years ago) and are formed by wind erosion over thousands of years. The dunes are a unique land formation of 400 acres of continuously shifting sand dunes.
Skeleton remains of giant mega-fauna (kangaroos, lions, emus and wombats) have been found there. Replicas of these animals can be seen at the Pioneer Museum in Wentworth, which is well worth a visit. Aboriginal tribes used this area to camp and hunt. Evidence of this is still being uncovered as the sands drift.
If its hot weather its even hotter in the middle of the Perry Sandhills, and stand by for flies… but its well worth a visit… get a ‘Sahara’esque’ taste. Formed 40,000 years ago but why.. they are such an odd find and to think they are continually on the move, most interesting.

NSW Drought 2018 - Wentworth, Pooncarie Region
It’s one thing to see footage of the NSW drought in the media. It’s another thing entirely to be standing in the midst of it. Depressing and frustrating. Read more here:
Lindeman Pass - Blue Mountains National Park, Australia
[SET PLAYBACK SETTINGS TO 720P OR 1080P] Lindeman Pass is an historic walking route in the Blue Mts of NSW. It has a heartbreaking history of one man's dream in the early 1900's to link Wentworth Falls with Katoomba, that was thwarted at almost every turn. Never officially opened is unmanaged and now in complete disrepair. Only accessible to experienced navigators and route finders, hopefully this video will show others, just a little bit of the wonder that lies below the tourist tracks and cliff lines above.
For full history, check out Jim Smith's book The Lindeman Pass.
