Most Shady Place in Japan: Kabukicho, Shinjuku | Tokyo's Red Light District

Shinjuku is one of the most famous metropolitan cities in Tokyo. It is also a great place to grab some drinks with friends. However, there are a few areas that can be a little dangerous if you don't know what to look out for. Kabukicho, Shinjuku's Red Light District and home of the Robot Restaurant, is one of those areas. Kabukicho is an area filled with bars, restaurants, host and hostess clubs, as well as love hotels. Kabukicho's name came from the late 40's plan to build kabuki theater in that area, that while was not built, the name stuck. One of the dangerous things about Kabukicho is the kyaku-hiki or pulling in of customers by staff of hostess clubs and certain bars. There are a few clubs and bars that will overcharge for drinks, have hidden fees, or worst case scenario slip drugs into your drinks. While this is a rare occurance, it does happen and can cause some real problems for those that cannot speak Japanese. Kabukicho isn't all bad, but if you do end up there just make sure to be careful.

Kabukicho is one of best places to hang out in Tokyo.Really safe and entertaiment.If you dont want a spend a lots of money just dont go to strip bars and use a common sence.

Tokyo - Shinjuku - Kabukicho - Night Time Entertainment

Tokyo - S h i n j u k u - is the core ward of the Tokyo Metropolis. To most tourists however it means the incredible hustle and bustle and commercial development around Shinjuku JR (Japan Rail) Station - the world's busiest railway station ,and Shinjuku Metro (Underground) Station. If you go there at night as I did you will head just north-east of Shinjuku JR Sation to K A B U K I C H O, Tokyo's main red-light district. After having blogged the hot spots of Thailand a visit to Kabukicho as an observer was appropriate. Here are my findings - you will be disappointed.

Living in Shinjuku, Japan

My apartment was located in Kabukicho (Shinjuku) which is the business ward in Tokyo.

At the top floor of a regular sized apartment building complete with my own mailbox, laundry machine, microwave, toaster oven and chopsticks.

It only took a few minutes to walk to the center of the Kabukicho district which is known in Japan as the 'red-light-district', comparable to the Dutch red-light-district. Supposedly the crime in this district is the highest in Japan and is a dangerous place to walk around at night.

My favorite places were definitely FamilyMart, Donki Hote, Sushi Mamire, the old district pact with lots of pubs, Lawson, the ramen shops and an Indian Curry place. After a few visits I already became good friends with the owner of the Sushi place which was 24/7 sushi and high class. I must have eaten the weirdest sushi in the world there.
