Rowlatt Act -Rowlatt Satyagraha-Jallianwala Bagh-Hunter Commission
Download PDF from
Rowlatt Act
10 March 1919, the Imperial Legislative Council passed the Rowlatt Act.
Rowlatt Act indefinitely extended the emergency measures of the Defence of India Act 1915 during the First World War.
It authorized the Government, through a system of special courts, to detain anyone without trial for a maximum period of two years.
Passed on the recommendations of the Rowlatt Committee and named after its president, British judge Sir Sidney Rowlatt.
How Gandhiji Became Important in Rowlatt Satyagraha?
moderate leaders of Congress formed the “Indian National Liberal Federation/ Association” in 1919. -Founded by Surendra Nath Banerjee and some of its prominent leaders were Tej Bahadur Sapru, V. S. Srinivasa Sastri and M. R. Jayakar. Actually, this divide was on the issue of Montague-Chelmsford Reforms (1919)
In continuation of its carrot and stick policy, the government also passed the Rowlatt Act in early 1919 in spite of stiff opposition from all the Indian members of the Legislative Council.
While all the sections of Indian opinion deeply resented the Act, it was Gandhi Ji who suggested a concrete form of a mass protest his first at an all Indian level.
Popular Slogan “ No Appeal, No Vakil, No Daleel “
Gandhi on March 23, 1919, to include the novel and a far more radical idea of an all-India Hartal on March 30 (later postponed to April 6).
Gandhi used three types of political network—the Home Rule Leagues, certain pan-Islamist groups, and a Satyagraha Sabha which he himself started at Bombay on February 24, 1919—to organize the Satyagraha.
As has already been pointed out, the younger and radical members of the two Home Rule Leagues were in need of a leader.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was in England.
Gandhi had already developed excellent relations with some Muslim leaders, particularly with Abdul Bari of the Firangi Mahal Ulama group at Lucknow.
Faced with the defeat of Ottoman Turkey and the rumors about the harsh peace terms being prepared by the victorious Allies, the Indian Muslims were increasingly becoming concerned about the future of the Caliph-Sultan. whom they considered as their spiritual leader.
The Satyagraha Sabha concentrated on publishing propaganda literature and collecting signatures to a Satyagraha pledge, while Gandhi himself embarked on a whirlwind tour.
The movement that emerged was very elemental, almost entirely urban, with the lower-middle-class groups and artisans playing a more important role than industrial workers.
There were demonstrations and hartals in most of the towns on March 30 and April 6 and these were generally accompanied by violence and disorder Punjab, already suffering from the after-effects of severe wartime repression following the Ghadar outbreaks of 1915,
forcible recruitment for the War and the ravages of disease reacted particularly strongly.
In Amritsar and Lahore, the situation became alarming for the Government.
10 April two leaders of the congress, Dr. Satya Pal and Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew, were arrested and taken secretly to Dharamsala.
There was a Peaceful meeting at Jillianwala Bagh to protest against the arrest of the leaders.
The army was called in and Amritsar was handed over to General Dyer, who issued an order prohibiting all public meetings and assemblies.
Jallianwala Bagh Incident
On the Baisakhi Day of April 13, 1919, a peaceful unarmed the crowd, consisting mostly of villagers who had come for a fair and were not aware of the ban on meetings, was fired upon without any warning and provocation by Dyers’ troops, in Jallianwala Bagh, a park enclosed from all sides.
The official estimate was 379 deaths, while the other estimates were considerably higher.
The brutality at Jallianwala Bagh stunned the entire nation. The response did not come immediately, but a little later.
For the moment, repression was intensified and Punjab was placed under martial law.
Gandhi withdrew the movement on April 18 calling it a ‘Himalayan blunder’. Since then, Gandhi became extremely wary about starting movements without adequate organizational and ideological preparation.
Rabindranath Tagore, voicing the agony and anger of the nation, through a famous letter, renounced his knighthood (May 30, 1919).
Gandhi returned the Kaiser-i-Hind medal given to him for his work during the Boer war.
The Congress set up a nonofficial inquiry committee into the Punjab massacre.
End of Rowlatt Act
Accepting the report of the Repressive Laws Committee, the Government of India repealed the Rowlatt Act, the Press Act, and twenty-two other laws in March 1922.

Lucknow Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport - Pushback Takeoff Arrivals
Great Aircraft actions at Lucknow Airport - Please Takeoff, Landings, Pushbacks, Arrivals at gate, Gate actions. Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (IATA: LKO, ICAO: VILK) is an international airport serving Lucknow, the capital of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated in the Amausi area of the city, and was earlier known as Amausi Airport before being renamed after Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth prime minister of India.
The airport was constructed in 1986 to facilitate corporate and government officials. With an increasing number of passengers, AAI decided to upgrade the airport. On 17 July 2008, the Government of India officially renamed it Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport. It was granted international status in May 2012.[5]
The airport was constructed with the purpose of facilitating VVIPs.[clarification needed] It was only in 2005 when the AAI took decision to upgrade the airport owing to an increased number of passengers, and also because of the introduction of private operators in the sector.[6]
A new terminal, equipped with the latest technology, at Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport, has been operative since 2 June 2012. It is used both for arrivals and departures of domestic and international flights. The new terminal is a three-tier building which can accommodate around 2000 passengers at a time.[6]
Structure
The airport consists of two terminals: domestic and international. AAI has also approved approximately 1383 crore rupees for a new integrated terminal.
Runway
The airport has a single runway that is 3,750 metres (12,300 ft) long. AAI has also planned for runway expansion at Lucknow Airport.
Landing amenities
CCS International Airport has ILS CAT-III-B compliant for landing in bad weather and foggy conditions. Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Amritsar and Kolkata are the only airports in India with ILS CAT-III-B which helps flights land safely even with a visibility as low as 50 metres.[7]
Terminals
Visitor's lobby overlooking Departure Hall, inside view of the new terminal building
The airport has two operational terminals and one in the planning stage:
Terminal 1
The original terminal, built to complement Charbagh Railway Station's architecture, is now used for international flights after the opening of Terminal 2.[8] It has two arrival and three departing gates as well as two immigration counters.
Terminal 2
The terminal was inaugurated by civil aviation minister Ajit Singh on 19 May 2012 before opening on 2 June 2012.[9] With five boarding gates, Terminal 2 is used for domestic flights. Terminal 2 of Lucknow airport deals with huge passenger traffic every year.[10] Air traffic growth has put some pressure on aerodromes as of 2017. Minister of State for Civil Aviation said, project management consultant has been awarded for expansion of existing terminal building for an estimated cost of Rs 880 crore.
CCS International Airport airside
Terminal 3
On 2nd May 2018, Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Civil Aviation (India) announced that a new terminal building will have a capacity to handle 24.6 million passengers annually and will be built at of INR 1383 crores.
On 25th Feb 2019, Adani Group was awarded with the operations and expansion of the existing as well as new terminal.
Panoramic view of Charbagh Railway Station at Lucknow
Lucknow Charbagh Railway Station (official name Lucknow NR, station code LKO) is one of the two main railway stations of Lucknow city for broad gauge trains. It is situated at Charbagh in the south of the city, hence the popular name. The word 'Charbagh' means four gardens which existed here earlier. The terms Lucknow Charbagh railway station and Lucknow NR station are used for the same railway station LKO. Lucknow Charbagh railway station (LKO) is operated by Lucknow Division of Northern Railway. Trains operated mainly by Northern Railway terminate at or pass through this station. It is also the main hub for the Lucknow-Kanpur Suburban Railway system (MEMU). It has nine platforms. As of 13 January 2013, 194 express trains (or 97 pairs of trains) (including Duronto, Rajdhani and Shatabdi) and 24 slow passenger trains (or 12 pairs of trains) startd from, terminated at or passed through LKO station.
The Charbagh railway station building's foundation stone was laid in 1914 and the building was completed in 1923. It is a beautiful building and from outside it looks like a palace. It has a large garden in front of the building. It incorporates the mix of Rajput, Awadhi and Mughal architecture. A unique feature of the Charbagh railway station is that an aerial view of the station building shows it as a chess board and the domes and pillars of the building appear to be pieces of a chess game.
