The BEST of Kakheti - Get me some WINE!
In today's vlog, we joined Real Georgia Tours on a private tour exploring the beautiful Kakheti region. Every now and again escaping the city into the countryside is needed, and this trip did not disappoint.
We spent time visiting the David Gareji caves, a large monastery complex which still has an operating church! Following that, we grabbed a delicious lunch, and headed over to Sighnagi city, where we toured more monasteries and took part in an amazing local organic wine tasting. If you're visiting Georgia, and feel the need to escape the hustle & bustle of the city? Then consider going on a day-tour - you won't be disappointed.

The Georgian David Gareja monastery complex is partially located in this province and is subject to a border dispute between Georgian and Azerbaijani authorities.
The travel infrastructure in Kakheti is fast developing, since it is the most visited region of Georgia. One can choose to stay in a guest house, in a small and comfortable hotel, or a beautiful boutique-style hotel while traveling in this region.

Dual Sport motorcycle adventure in Georgia - Kakheti wine region
Today we were riding in dual sport motorcycle adventure heaven in Georgia roads, on what I can only describe as one of the best adventure rides of my 2018. Twisties on end, mountains in the background and a little water crossing to cool the excitement down, was the recipe for our riding day on our way to Kakheti's wine region.
The plan was simple, go from Tbilisi to Kvareli, a small place in the province of Kakheti, deep in the center of yet another part of the wine route of the country.
Both I and Charlotte are at this point struggling. Since Istanbul that we have been fighting food poisoning in one way or the other, not having much more than a couple of good days in the last almost month and a half, and even though our spirits are high, our bodies are nearly depleted of energy, and that is taking a tool.
But we set ourselves to do a job, to learn and taste wines and teas around the world, and so we did.
After an incredible riding day, with incredible motorcycle touring roads, stellar weather and the bikes running like Swiss watches, we arrived in Kvareli, a seemingly lost city on the base of the mountains that would serve as a base of operations for our wine ventures.
We had planned there to visit the longest wine cellar in the world - 7.7 kms carved inside a mountain - a few vineyards including one from a well-known priest. Sadly, we didn’t manage that as our bodies caved into the wear and tear of the weeks of stress we have been submitting them to, and for two days we didn’t manage to get out of bed. However, eventually, we did! And we made our way into Kindzmarauli Corporation Wine House.
I must say it was a great experience seeing the more corporate side of Georgian wine with a tour delivered by a great guide that answered all our questions and more. But of course, no wine tour can be completed without wine tastings.
I’m unclear why, but instead of the 4 standard wine tastings, we got to try 7 of their productions, from European wines to European Georgian style wines. This tasting was probably the most exciting part of our wine adventure in Georgia, and not necessarily because some of them reminded us of Portuguese wines, but because we got to taste a bit of what can be the future of Georgian wines, with very very exciting blends and single grape manufactures of what they called European Georgian style wines are wines that start their life in a Qvevri
and pass by a barrel before they go on the bottle, and uau they were an experience, and that said experience made our day! Such a great wine day!

David Gareji 2of2
David Gareji is located east of Georgia in Kakheti the border of Azerbaijan, and literally in the border you can stand between two countries Georgia and Azerbaijan.
Kachetia / Kakheti (Georgia/Gruzja)
Kakheti is situated in the east part of Georgia and abounds with unique historical monuments and wineries. Among numerous orchards the best vines are growing to give us special Georgian wine which is getting more and more popular across the Globe. History of Kakheti winegrowing takes a start from VI millennium BC. The capital city of Kakheti province is Telavi which is one of the destination points for travelers. Telavi becomes a stepping-stone on your way to wildest and remotest mountain region of Tusheti, and Pankisi George inhabited by Chechens. Travelling in the east part of the country you can't miss Alaverdi Cathedral which was built in 11th century. It used to be the second tallest religious building in the country. This medieval monastery has a very interesting and tempestuous history. Ikalto Monastery should also be on your way. This is where Shota Rustaevli was educated according to some legends. He was the greatest Georgian Poet. Another amazing place is small town Sighnaghi which can surprise you by its architecture and the neighboring Dodbe Monastery where Saint Nino was buried. In 337 AD she has preached Christianity in Georgia. Being in this region it is worth to save some time on exploring the vineyards as this is what Kakheti stands famous for! No matter if you pick small private vinery or industrial, the hosts will guide you comprehensively and professionally. You'll have an insight of how wine production process looks like. Continuing your journey in Kakhetia visit David Gareja Monastery complex which is located in the south and borders with Azerbaijan. It is amazing monastery with fascinating architecture. It was built in 6th century and its construction is partially done in rocks. You can take a wonderful view of semi-desert slopes from the nearby ascent where the upper church is located.
We strongly recommend you visiting Kakheti especially when the vintage cycle is coming to an end in the beginning of October. This is when the festive time arrives and wine is everywhere!

Zapraszamy Was do Kachetii. Najlepiej w końcowym okresie winobrania (początek października) gdy trwają festyny a wino leje się strumieniami!

The G.R.A.P.E. Expedition: Khareba Winery in the Kakheti Region of Georgia
Viticulture and winemaking has played a significant role in Georgian culture for over 8000 years. Host, Joey Close, joins the G.R.A.P.E. team in the Kakheti region of Georgia at the well known Tunnel Winery of Khareba to learn more about Georgia's unique winemaking techniques and heritage.

Georgia, wine region Kakheti
Kakheti is justly renowned as the most important wine-growing region of Georgia. Every village produces its own kind of wine, some of which will rival more famous labels like Tsinandali or Napareuli. Throughout the region you can knock on any door for direction and find yourself 5 seconds later with a glass of wine in hand and an invitation to stay the afternoon to drink and eat.
The most visited towns in Kakheti are Telavi and Signagi. Telavi is considered as the administrative and cultural center of this region. Rich in gardens and streets with oak and walnut trees Telavi clearly retains the pleasure of small city.
Small town Signagi also called Town of Love has been renovated three years ago. Narrow, tortuous streets and wooden balconies create some special atmosphere. The old part with different historical monuments is surrounded by 17th century city wall and towers. Until recently there were only some family hotels, but now Signagi features couple of hotels, where you can find pleasurable atmosphere and well-known Georgian hospitality.
Georgian wine for local people is more than just wine. This is true not only because it has the centuries-old history and excellent gustatory qualities, but also because the vine is a symbol of history as well, history of vine-growing and wine-making in Georgia that numbers several thousand years. This is confirmed by multiple archaeological excavations. Stones of grapes of cultivated species, discovered on the territory of Georgia, are dated by 7000 B.C. And in 1995, bronze statuette of a man was found in Georgia, holding a horn with wine in his hands.
You can enjoy wine-tasting in wine-cellars, restaurants or local houses and spend and the most unforgettable time ever.
The best time to visit Kakheti is during Rtveli, the harvest season at the beginning of October. The autumn colors are magnificent, and every village celebrates the bounty of its vineyards by decorating balconies with branches of grapes and filling every basket and bucket until theyre brimming over. On October, 22, Kakheti celebrates Wine Festival. You can notice people in traditional clothes making barbeque, churchkhela (Georgian candy) and some other dishes from Georgian traditional cuisine. In many yards youll be offered a taste from a ladle just emerging from deep inside kvevri, the large clay amphora buried underground in which Kakheti wine ferments.
