symbol of British colonial rule, was built in 1923 by the British. In honour of the wife of the British Governor William Manning, it was named Lady Manning Bridge and generaly called Old Kallady Bridge by the locals. This was the oldest and longest iron bridge in Sri Lanka and is the gateway connecting Batticaloa town with the southern places of the district. On an average 10,000 vehicles crossed the narrow, single lane bridge daily.
The famous “singing fish” legend is associated with this bridge. In 1954, two American priests recorded fishes singing under the bridge and the recording was broadcasted on Radio Ceylon in the 1960s. The faint but distinct musical sound resembling a plucked guitar during the nights of full moon days of April to September was clearly heard from the lagoon waters in the area along the Kallady Bridge. The mysterious music is attributed to a noise emanated from some form of a marine life found in the lagoon.
With the opening of the New Kallady Bridge, the old bridge is now free for cycling, walking, fishing and a miraculous nature viewing.
