Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram are major temple cities in Tamilnadu, India
Mahabalipuram was a 7th century port city of the South Indian dynasty of the Pallavas around 60 km south from the city of Chennai. Nowadays it is still a fishing 'harbor'.
Mahabalipuram has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th century, and is as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kanchipuram is a major temple city of Tamilnadu.
Brahmin Sthapathis have shown their excellent architecture cognizance in planning the architecture and sculpting the numerous temples at Kanchipuram. Today's city is the opposite a dirty, noisy mess.

Kanchipuram - India's finest architecture, history and culture come together
The Kanchipuram District is situated on the north-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. It was the capital of the Pallava dynasty during 6th through to the 8th century A.D., when the Pallavas created the great stone monuments of Mahabalipuram. It is also a sacred destination. The ancient town had a thousand temples, but only one hundred and twenty six of these can be found today, including the few located on the outskirts. Kailasanathar Temple and Sri Ekambareswarar Temple are among the few standing today.
The Kailasanathar temple is the oldest structure in Kanchipuram. It is a Hindu temple in the Dravidian architectural style. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and has great historical importance. Kailasnathar Temple was built by the Pallava Dynasty during the first quarter of the eighth century. The compound contains a large number of carvings, including many half-animal deities which were popular during the early Dravidian architectural period. The structure contains 58 small shrines dedicated to various forms of Shiva. There innumerable carvings of Pallva art inside the temple, of which the Taandava dance of Shiva and the Narsimha avatar of Lord Vishnu are a pleasure to behold. The architecture of this temple resembles the shore temple at
Another monument in the list of Pallava architecture in Kanchipuram is Sri Ekambareswarar Temple. The temple is the largest in Kanchipuram and is located in the northern part of the town. It is also known as Ekambaranathar Temple. The temple ‘gopuram’ or gateway tower is 59m high, making it one of the tallest gopurams in India. There is a mango tree in the temple complex which is believed to be 3000 years to 3500 years old. The tree is the sthala vruksham of this temple and is said to bear fruit of four different flavours each season, representing the four Vedas or holy books of Hinduism.
Kanchipuram is one of the seven sacred cities of India and is also famous for its high quality hand-woven silk fabrics and saris, begetting it the title of Silk City. Saris made in Kachipuram are popularly known Kanjeevaram Saris. Kanjeevaram saris range thousands of rupees with the price going up to lakhs of rupees, depending on the weave as well as the amount of zari or silver thread used in the weave. Kanchipuram, the city of silk is not only rich in architectural heritage but its heritage still lives on in the weave of it sarees.

KANCHIPURAM SILK SAREE SHOPPING @ NALLI SILKS CHENNAI
Kanchipuram or Kanjeevaram Silk Saree
Kanjeevaram silk saree is a magnificent creation of the craftsmen living in a small town, Kanchi (Kanchipuram), situated near the Bangalore city of South India. The saree has been named after the town in which it is produced. The silk used in the creation of Kanjivaram saree is extremely fine as well as durable and is one of the most popular forms of silk in the state of Tamil Nadu. The bold and bright color of the sari is very much preferred by the South Indian women, whose trousseau remains incomplete without this amazing outfit.
Kanjivaram sarees of India make use of a combination of numerous colored threads. Adding to the attraction of the saris is the exquisite and elaborate zari (a form of embroidery) work. The motifs used in an Indian Kanchipuram sari are heavily based on the Pallava temples, palaces and paintings. However, these days one can see scenes from great epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with the Bhagwad Gita being used as motifs. Tribal designs as well as contemporary patterns are also seen.
The sheer magnitude of textures, colors and designs of Kanjivaram silk saris of India is incredible. Simple saris can be prepared in about 10 to 12 days. However, decorative ones require up to 20 days of workmanship. Kanjeevarams are expensive and can cost anywhere between Rs. 2000 to Rs. 50,000. The cost of the saree depends upon the amount of zari intertwined with the silk. The more the zari work, the more expensive the sari will be.
Making of a Kanjeevaram Silk Saree
The procedure of making an Indian Kanchipuram sari commences with the task of preparing the thread, which is used at the weaver's loom. This involves, first, twisting the thread and then, dying and drying it in the sun. The border, the body and the pallu of the sari are created separately by the weaver. Then, he interlocks them together in an extremely tight joint.

KANCHIPURAM TEMPLE Varadharaja Perumal Temple
Varadharaja Perumal Temple or Hastagiri or Attiyuran is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in the holy city of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu believed to have been visited by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. It is located in a suburb of Kanchipuram known as the Vishnu Kanchi that is a home for many famous Vishnu temples. One of the greatest Hindu scholars of Vaishnava VisishtAdvaita philosophy, Ramanuja is believed to have resided in this temple. The temple along with Ekambareswarar Temple and Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram is popularly known as Mumurtivasam (abode of trio) while Srirangam is referred to as ‘ The Koil’ (meaning: temple) and Tirupathi as the ‘Malai’ (Meaning: hill). Among the Divya Desams, Kanchipuram Varadaraja Perumal temple is known as the ‘Perumal Koil’. This is one of the most sacred places for Vaishnavites. There is another famous temple of Varadarajaswamy in Kurmai, of Palamaner mandal in Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh, called the Kurma Varadaraja Swamy Temple.
There is a belief that the temple was first built by the Pallava king Nandivarman II.Varadharaja Perumal Temple was originally built by the Cholas in 1053[7] and it was expanded during the reigns of the great Chola kings Kulottunga Chola I and Vikrama Chola. In the 14th century another wall and a gopura was built by the later Chola kings. When a Mughul invasion was expected in 1688, the main image of the deity was sent to Udayarpalayam, now part of Tiruchirapalli District.[8] It was brought back with greater difficulty after the involvement of local preceptor who enlisted the services of general Todarmal[disambiguation needed]. Robert Clive, the British general during the colonial period visited the Garuda seva festival and presented a valuable necklace (now termed Clive Maharkandi), which is adorned during a special occasion every year.[8] There are inscriptions dated 1532 CE (record 544 of 1919) indicating the gift of number of villages made by Achutaraya.[9] Vira Narasingaraya Saluva Nayaka who was directed by Achutaraya broke the royal order by giving more lands to Ekambaranathar temple than the Varadaraja Swamy temple against the instruction of an equal gift to either of the temples. Achutaraya on hearing this equally distributed the lands to both the temples. In modern times, the administration is carried out by Hindu Religious and Endowment of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
