Kankwari fort on the Kankwari plateau in Sariska Tiger Reserve
An early 1990's view of the Kankwari fort where Dara Shikoh was held captive.
Kankwari fort was built by Raja Jai Singh I of Amber who was a senior general in Aurangzeb’s army and grandson of Raja Man Singh, one of the nine jewels of Akbar’s court.
The fort looks abandoned and has a lovely old world feel to it. The surrounding area is dry and barren.
The fort is constructed on a hill, so one can see a clear view of the surrounding land.

Kankwari fort | Oldest fort | Sariska | Alwar |Rajasthan |
Kankwadi or Kankwari is the site of Kankwadi fort and village, located in the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar district.
The fort was founded by Jai Singh I as a famine work. In the 17th century, MughalEmperor Aurangzeb briefly imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh in the struggle for the succession of the Mughal throne.
The village was evicted in 2009, but renovation works in the fort are going on to promote tourism. As of August 2016, only three families reside in the village below the fort, but their migration is in progress by the government.
The fort remains open from October to July end throughout the year and anyone can visit it after renting a Safari Jeep from the Forest Office.

Kankwari Fort: Major attractions for visitors
Kankwari Fort in Alwar.
The ancient Kankwari Fort lies in the buffer area of the sanctuary about 21 km from its main entry point. Though the fort is lesser known but it holds special significance in the history of medieval India. Kankwari Fort in Alwar is flanked with hillocks covered with lush plantations and sprawling green meadows that add to the beauty of the otherwise ruined fort.
The historic Kankwari Fort in Alwar dates back to the days of Mughal rule in India. It is believed that Dara Shikoh, the brother of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, served his lifelong exile at the Kankwari Fort. History suggests that Aurangzeb dispelled his brother from the capital after a serious tiff and commanded a lifelong exile for him at the Kankwari Fort in Alwar that was specially built by Aurangzeb for the purpose. It is believed that nearly thousands of soldiers were ordered to stay at the fort round the clock to guard Dara Shikoh's activities and to ensure that he does not flee.

भानगढ़ से भी ज्यादा भुतहा लगता है यह किला : Lonely & desolate Kankwari Fort
Bhangarh fort in Alwar district of Rajasthan is considered to be the one of the most haunted places in India. But a day after visiting Bhangarh, I got a chance to visit Kankwari Fort deep inside Sariska Tiger Reserve. This 17th century fort is largely inaccessible and hardly any tourist reaches here. Honestly speaking, I was more thrilled to see this fort and felt more uncomfortable here than the over-crowded and touristy Bhangarh fort. See it for yourself! For a detailed account of this fort, with more images and information, you can go to my site and view the post-
Sariska - Road to Kankwari
Sariska - Road to Kankwari fort plateau (Kankwadi) where Dara Shikoh was kept captive by the Mughals. This is also the valley below where the two re-introduced tigers from Ranthambhor have been brought in. See Sterculia, Boswellia serrata and Anogeissus pendula trees of the Aravalli range.
This road also leaves the park and goes to Tehla Jheel, Aman Bagh resort and the Nilkanth temples.

Tehla Fort around Sariska National Park
Aerial view of Tehla Fort around Sariska National Park.
Tehla is a small village near Alwar, Rajasthan. It is tucked between the foothills of the Aravalli mountain ranges. Tehla Fort is situated on top of the hill and looks like the crown of the village. It is a magnificent Fort of this area. Actually, Tehla was part of Alwar Principality (Riyasat). It was under control of the Maharaja of Alwar.
However, it is not a massive construction but with all royal and defensive segments. There are high ramparts and a big entrance. The palatial building on the south corner of the fort is really a Rajasthani style. The magnificent plaster done in the corridor is good construction quality. A beautiful scenic view from the top of the palace is really a great pleasure.
