Bicycles For Humanity - Opuwo The Kaoko Bike Work Shop
In 2009 Bicycles For Humanity, Australasia sent it's first 40 ft shipping container of unused bikes to Namibia. It was implemented as a Bicycle Empowerment Centre by our in country partner Bicycle Empowerment Network Namibia.
Before this bike shop was established the closest place you could buy a bike or get one serviced was 300 km away. The arrival of 400 bikes from Melbourne and the establishment of the skills to service and maintain them has altered the town.
While the bikes provide for access to education, health care, economic opportunity and community the bike work shop provides employment, skills training, business opportunity and economic stimulus.
The Kaoko Bike Workshop is a very successful project - the first of many.

Tydens haar besoek het sy met van die inwoners gepraat, asook met die besoekers wat net kom om na kos en ander waardevolle items te soek. Inwoners wou ontstoke weet waarom die Regering nie meer doen om hulle op te voed nie. Hulle ry met duur motors en gaan slaap elke aand versadig. Hoe kan sy ons vra wat ons hier soek? Ek sal mos nie by my eie huis opstaan om hier te kom grawe nie, het een van die vroue gesê wat gereeld by die asgate vir kos gaan soek.

Caroline visited Toronto in July 2012 to promote the products of her communities. . Her trip was supported by Nharo African Arts and Crafts and the Namibian Ministry of Trade. While in Toronto she spoke to teachers in the Dufferin Peel Catholic School Board and the Toronto District Catholic School Board.
