15 Things to do in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide video transcript:
Hey guys this week we are in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan. Yeah, so Karakol (Каракол) is a place that we've actually visited last year but we were only here on a day trip so we didn't get to see a whole lot. Right and this is basically the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan. There is a lot of good hiking, you can take boat trips. So we're just going to show you like what you can do in and around this area. Let's
Our first stop was the Dungan Mosque. This mosque is unique because architecturally it looks a lot like a Buddhist temple; this is because it was built by the Dungan community, an ethnically Chinese people group who follow Islam.
Another iconic place of worship in Karakol (Каракол) is the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. This is a traditional Russian wooden cathedral complete with onion domes.
We also squeezed in a quick visit to Karakol’s History Museum, which has a rather fascinating taxidermy collection.
Okay so it is dinner time here in Karakol (قاراقول) and the sun has gone down and today we are going to be doing a traditional meal with a family.
So we're going to be preparing Ashlyanfu (Ашлян-фу) which is a cold noodle starch soup and then we're going to go into their home and have a nice family dinner together.
And because we love our food, we also took a cooking class where we learned to make a traditional Uyghur dish: laghman (Лагман).
As far as day trips go, one nearby attraction from Karakol (Каракол) is Jeti Oguz known for its red hills. It’s about a 30 minute drive and you can easily hire a driver to take you out there.
Last but not least, one of the most popular things to do in Karakol (Каракол) is hiking. This is considered the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) with many hikes and horse treks starting right in town.
And that’s a little taste of what Karakol and the surrounding area has to offer visitors. We hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Karakol (Каракол).
This is part of our Travel in Kyrgyzstan video series showcasing Kyrgyz food, Kyrgyz culture and Kyrgyz cuisine.

Food Tour in Karakol - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
From the Seven Bulls, we continue our journey directly to Karakol.
Here, we meet Amann from Destination Karakol in the Visitor Center. He will introduce us to the food of different nationalities and the best local food spots in town. First stop is at the bazaar in Karakol, where you find people of the Dungan, Kyrgyz and Uyghur nationality. The Dungans came from China in the 18th and 19th centuries, originally they were Hui Chinese. We go to a Dungan family to try Ashlyan-Fu, their national dish. It is made from thick rice noodles and thinner wheat noodles, mixed with a vinegar chili sauce. Sometimes it is spicy, so it is good to eat it together with piroshky, the fried bread stuffed with potatoes.
Our second stop is Cafe Zarina, run by Uyghur business. The Uyghurs were originally from China and they are one of the oldest nationality in this area, even older than the Kyrgyz. The Uighurs are the third largest population after Kyrgyz and Russians.
We enjoy Laghman, the national food of the Uyghur people. Laghman is made of long noodles, that means long life. The noodles come with a special sauce, made of vegetables Sometimes it is spicy. You find different varieties of Laghman, where only the noodles are the same, sometimes boiled, sometimes fried. But the sauce and the vegetables can vary. We try the fried version, the Boso Laghman.
The third stop is Kafe Kaynar. Here we enjoy Tatar Azuu. In the Tatar language it means food, in the Persian language, it means slices of meat. In this version, it is made of french fries with marinated, fried slices of meat, salted cucumbers, and onions. Originally it was made without potatoes because the potatoes came to this region 200 years ago. It is a Tatar national dish. Aman is Tatar and Tatar Azuu is his favorite dish.
During the meal, he tells us more about the history of the Tartars. The Tatars are actually Bulgars whose roots go back to Attila's Huns. When Attila died, his empire broke down into three parts. One part came to Central Asia, one to central Russian territory. The third part remained in Eastern Europe, today's Hungary, Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula.
During the reign of Genghis Khan, one of the Chinese tribes near the Chinese wall was named Tatar. But Genghis Khan killed the whole tribe.

Visiting Karakol as day trip in Kyrgyzstan
After spending several days focused on the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan we decided to take a day trip to Karakol (Каракол) for a change of pace. Our trip focused on visiting some museums, mosques, cathedrals, markets and having a traditional Kyrgyz lunch inside of a yurt. We had ambitious plans of hiking, visiting a waterfall and few other things but we ran out of time. If you're going to visit Karakol learn from our mistake and spend a few more days to really enjoy the outdoor adventure activities.

Visiting Karakol as day trip in Kyrgyzstan Travel Video Transcript:
Good morning from Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан). It is time for a day trip because we've been spending a lot of time at the World Nomad Games and it is time to get out and get to know the country a little bit. So we're taking a day trip to Karakol (Каракол). We're going to be doing some hiking, visiting waterfalls. Yeah, it is going to be really cool. I mean we've seen quite a bit of the country but we haven't been to that area yet so we're really excited about it. Let's go.
Okay, so we have been driving for about two hours and we've almost made it to Karakol (Каракол). Right now we're in the outskirts and we're stopping at the Nikolay Mikhailovich Przhevalsky museum and basically this was a guy who wanted to be a traveler. So I can relate to him. Um, he was from Russia but at the time Russian didn't have the permission to just you know go off and wander around on their own. So this guy decided to join the military and he proposed to be the first person to explore Central Asia and reach Tibet and his proposal was approved so he was funded by Russia and today there is a museum dedicated to his work.
After a short visit to the museum, we then continued on our drive towards Karakol (Каракол), where our first stop was the Dungan Mosque.
So in order to visit the Mosque you don't just wear a scarf. You need a full cloak. This will be interesting. Alright. Let's put this on. Fancy. It is like velvet.
The mosque gets its name from the Dungan people who are Muslim, but of Chinese origin. The building is quite unique because you can see the two cultures colliding; it contains elements of a traditional mosque, but at first glance it looks more like a Buddhist temple.
So now we're visiting an Orthodox Church and that was really close to the mosque.
We then went to the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is in the centre of Karakol (Каракол). Just remember, girls need to wear a head covering and boys must take off their hats in order to go inside.
From there we continued to the Karakol Market in search of food. If there’s one dish the town is known for it’s Ashlyan Fu, a cold noodle soup with spices and jellies. There’s a whole alley in the market that specializes in this dish; so be sure to try it.
Alright so we've had a pretty busy morning of sightseeing. Now it is time for food. Yeah, we've worked up a pretty big appetite and the coolest thing is we're going to go eat inside of yurt. A yurt.
For lunch we had Dumlyama: a dish with potatoes, cabbage, onions, peppers, and meat. We also had boorsok: which are little pieces of fried dough that go really nice with jam.
So we've stopped off at this kind of cool scenic area that is called Jeti-Ögüz and nearby there is apparently some fantastic hiking. Yeah, and the name translates to seven bulls so I don't know do you see any bulls over there? You know I see in the rock formations. I think I see more than seven things.
We had really been looking forward to hiking along here, but unfortunately, this is the part of the tour where we ran out of time. This also means we didn’t get to see the waterfalls we had heard about, so if you do decide to visit Karakol (قاراقول), don’t do it as a quick day trip like we did!
Yeah, I think it is the kind of place where you want to give it a few days so you can see the surrounding areas and also that town is really known for hiking so if you're in to outdoorsy stuff go there and explore it properly.
Yeah, maybe spend like two or three days in Karakol (Каракол) see the surroundings, hike, trek and yeah really explore it.

Birds Eye View of Karakol - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
Karakol lies between the eastern end of the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan, the Issyk-Kul, and the Tian Shan mountain range.
The city was founded in 1860 as a Russian military outpost. Yet, Karakol did only develop when research travelers started to investigate the region between China and Kyrgyzstan.
In 1888, Russian military and geographer Przhevalsky died of typhus during preparations for a trip to Tibet. His grave and a museum are now in a nearby memorial park
The most important sights in the city are the Dungan Mosque from 1910 and the wooden Orthodox church from 1895.
As we have some free time, we make a short flight with the drone. We take off from the large square in front of the building No. 1, which houses the city administration and a Kickboxing Club. West of it is the Municipal Theater and to the east a Lenin monument.
By means of the drone, we recognize the Kungej-Alatau Mountains to the north. It lies beyond the Issyk-Kul and rises up to 4771 m. In the south, you can see the Tian Shan Mountains.
Here you see already, that Karakol is an ideal starting point for trekking and cycle tours.
You can also clearly see the Russian Orthodox Church, west of the square.

Tagaytay Hotel, Karakol - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
In Karakol, we are staying at the Tagaytay Hotel, the first house in the city. The friendly and nice owner seems to work day and night.
The rooms are clean and equipped with all the necessary comfort. The services include free Wi-Fi and parking. A large conference hall, sauna, and a fireplace hall are also available.
The location is also optimal, an approx 5 minutes walk to the building no. 1. It is definitely recommended.
After many meals during our Karakol Food Tour, we are not very hungry in the evening. We go to the nearby Kochevnik Cafe, but eat only a salad Munich with salami. Our companion Dasha enjoys a potato casserole with crab meat, smoked chicken, cheese, and mayonnaise. Along with our meal, we drink Moldavian wine, which tastes very good.
During a short tour in the area around the Tagaytay Hotel, we also get into the back streets. Here we see more slab constructions, but there are pretty street-art paintings on the facades.
A necessary purchase leads us to the market. The market stalls are, like Murgab in the Pamir, housed in containers.

Kyrgyzstan 2017 /Trek Terský Alatau, Karakol, Ala Archa/
Začali jsme v oblasti Karakolu, kde jsme tradičně začli v Jety Oguz, ale po prvním sedle Teleti Pass, jsme zabočili do méně známého údolí vedoucí pod Pik Karakol. Zde jsme prošli přímo pod Pik Karakolem přes ledovce a sedlo On-Ter. Následně jsme mířili směrem k jezeru Ala Kul, kde jsme šli také méně známou cestou přes sedlo Cnernyye Kamn, jenž se nachází přímo nad Ala Kulem. Následně jsme od jezera sešli známou trasou dolů a do městečka Karakol se vydali UAZem.
Jeden den relaxu u největšího ledovcového jezera Issyk Kul a už jsme to směřovali do národního parku Ala Archa. Zde je možné (s vybavením) zlézt nějaké ty vršky. Nám počasí umožnilo pouze výstup na Pik Ucitel.
Horse trekking tour in Kyrgyzstan mountains | Karakol to Ala-kul lake with Bulak Say
This 3 day 2 night horse trek in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan was THE most amazing experience of our entire trip!
Journey by horse through Alpine forests and snow capped mountains, trek up to the famous lake of Ala-kul. Stay in yurts, try local traditional food, bath in amazing wild hot springs, soak in everything that is Kyrgyzstan.
Day 1 Set off from Karakol around 9-10am. Trek by horse up the Altyn Arashan valley. Arrive in Altyn Arashan mid afternoon to be greeted with tea and snacks. Check into your comfortable yurt and explore the hot springs around the village:
Day 2 After and early start and a good breakfast trek by horse to a point near Ala-kul lake. At this point you have to do the last steep climb by foot to a beautiful ridge that overlooks Ala-kul lake. This last part of the route is too steep for the horses. It will take around 1 hour by foot. After some time enjoying Ala-kul lake, head back to the horses and ride back to Altyn Arashan village. When you return to Altyn Arashan enjoy the hotsprings again!
Day 3 After a relaxed start and breakfast trek by horseback back down the Altyn Arashan valley to your starting point.
Everything was so perfect! We are so happy we found Bulak-Say
If you're this way make sure you check them out!

Kyrgyzstan travel experience
Probably not on your travel list, but it should be! Wonderful nature, warm and friendly people (mostly), not crowded by tourists and a lot, lot to see, try and enjoy. We visited the capital - Bishkek, Song Kul lake, Karakol, Altyn Arashan etc. It was really an adventure! Not for everyone! Don't expect public transport outside the city.
