Karangahake Gorge Windows walk
Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway (Windows walk)
There is a newer version of this video available with better footage of the mining tunnels
We have visited the gorge a number of times now, we've seen it calm, we've seen it rough, we've seen it dry and we've seen it wet, but besides all the dramatic views, there is one special event that will always stay with me, at first I thought we have done something wrong but then...
Karangahake Gorge lies between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges, State Highway 2, the main link between the Waikato region and the Bay of Plenty passes through this gorge, you'le find it just a few kilometers after the town of Paeroa, home of L&P, arguably New Zealand's favourite beverage.
Voted as one of the 101 Must Do's for Kiwis, the Windows Walk is a loop walk that leads through the old gold mining tunnels and I do recommended a flash light to navagate through them, the ‘windows’ of the walk are four open holes which look down on the spectacular river gorge far below, these were once used to tip tailings into the Waitawheta Gorge below. The path follows the route of a bush tramway and many ruins and old mining equipment can be seen with sections that looks like a scenes out of Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider. It's a very easy walk which includes 3 suspension bridges which can be aquard walking accross and keeping your balance... The loop takes you through a 1,100m old railway tunnel which is is fairly well lit.

Karangahake Windows Walk
My second to last weekend in NZ we were hoping not to go far from Auckland but still have a little adventure. After seven and a half months of adventures.... It was getting hard to find new things near us. We headed out towards Tauranga and landed at Karangahake Windows Walk. It was not the most beautiful day. A bit gloomy and on and off showers. The typical weather for late fall in NZ. I was amazed but this old mining site. It may not have seemed to be the best day to start, but everything was so green! Marija came with us for the first time and I was very happy I was able to travel with her. As always you can hear Erica through the whole video. We only bring her for the entertainment and snacks..... At least we didn't have to listen to Drake for 3 hours this time.

Karangahake Gorge 'Windows Walk'
Walking through the 'Windows Walk' mineshaft at dawn, using a Flare to light up the way.
Karangahake Gorge Windows Walk (with Stelley08)
I went for another walk with Stelley08, this one was in the Karangahake Gorge / Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park areas. Found a few interesting invertebrates (such as the giant bush dragonfly and nursery web spiders), explored some abandoned mines tunnels, and I went for a swim (even though the water was not cold enough for the true nature swimming experience).

From the DOC website: The Karangahake Gorge region combines gold mining history and natural beauty, much of it accessible through a variety of walks. The Windows Walk boasts beautiful scenery and spectacular mining remnants including disused gold mining tunnels.
In the 1890s three large batteries were built at Karangahake to service the Woodstock, Talisman and Crown mines. The Woodstock Gold Mining Company was formed in 1885. It met with little success because of the difficult, refractory nature of the ore despite its high grade. It wasn’t until the introduction of the ‘cyanide’ process in 1894 (developed by the nearby Crown Gold Mining Co in 1889) which greatly improved returns, that the mine developed. In 1895 the company erected a 40 stamp battery and cyanide plant, as did the Crown (1893), and Talisman Companies (1901).

KARANGAHAKE HISTORIC WALKWAY /// VLOG #92
We loved our vacation, but missed New Zealand so much! So after coming back, we decided to do some hiking and explore some new beautiful places of this country. We went to Karangahake Gorge - that gorgeous place you all must have seen , if you've travelled to Auckland or the Coromandel at least once. They have a Historic Walkway there. It is about 7 km long, but can be divided into several parts. We did the famous Windows Walk, where you have to walk through the tunnel with a torch) and too the Railway Tunnel Loop with the well-known 1,1 km long tunnel after. It was amazing!

This walkway features historic railway remains in a stunning natural gorge setting, including two steel truss bridges and a 1km rail tunnel, and provide access to the relics of historic gold mining. The walkway follows the railway line through the gorge and then opens out alongside the Ohinemuri River.

The level 7 track along the Western side of the K Gorge mountain and around to the summit. I took a peek into all the mineshafts I spotted on the way, but did NOT enter any.
Well worth the effort of going all the way up there! Good exercise and an awesome view over the area.

New Zealand`s Gorge of Gold
Winter Hike up Mount Pirongia (Nikau Walk)
Climbed up Pirongia again with some friends. We went up a different track to last time (Nikau Walk), very scenic, and at a different time of year (late autumn and just before winter, last time it was late spring just before summer). Rivers, streams, forest, fungi, wildlife....the usual!
I found some mushrooms or toadstools. If you are able to identify fungal species, please let me know and tell me what I've found in this video.
