Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto: All 10,000 Gates Explored ★ ONLY in JAPAN #24 夜の京都伏見稲荷神社
Adventure in Kyoto! Loads of culture and history in one city.
We've got all that and more in this episode of ONLY in JAPAN.
Kyoto's Shrine of 10,000 'Torii' or Gates is simply awesome. It's also ranked as Japan's no.1 attraction for foreign tourists*
Yes, it can be crowded during the day, but we'll explore this mysterous shrine at night when no one is around -- except the wildlife and a few stragglers.
This time, John will explore and explain Kyoto's most popular shrine, Fushimi Inari.
HISTORY:
Fushimi Inari is full of history going back to the year 717!
John interviews one of the Shinto priests and unravel some of the history that might not be in guidebooks. The lengend of Fushimi Inari is revealed!
Are those gates orange or red?
What's the meaning behind the color?
Which big Hollywood movie was this shrine featured in?
Who cleans all these gates?
John wants to know.
WHEN TO VISIT:
It may seem impossible to escape the crowds here, but you can!
The hours are officially listed as 10:00 to 16:00 but the shrine is open to all free of charge 24 hours a day.
Best of all it's FREE! Why? The gates!! They're all bought by people and businesses to bring them luck.
The best time to see it is at night. It's when most locals go with thewir friends, high school couples can be seen climbing up together. Night time adventurers will also see a lot of cats! That rustling you hear on the woods outside the orange gates may not always be a cat though ....
KYOTO BY BICYCLE:
How do you get to Fushimi Inari from Kyoto Station?
I could draw you a map, but it's much better to show you by bicycle!
Rent a cycle for the day and see more of Kyoto. Cheap and easy.
KCTP (Kyoto Cycling Tour Project) has a good variety of city bicycles for the surrounding hills or the city. You can reserve online or call and have the bike waiting for you as soon as you arrive.
The city is not always cycle friendly so keep to the left side, use the light after dark and try to avoid pedestrian sidewalks.
HOW TO GET THERE:
Here's the Google Map
Take the JR Nara line from Kyoto Station for 3 stops or rent a bicycle :) Taxi takes about 10-15 minutes.

Tokyo Cat Cafe Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN #31 猫カフェ
Cat Cafes have been booming here in Tokyo. What's all the fuss about? John and Jennifer Juilen visit Temari no Ouchi Cat Cafe in Kichijoji, Tokyo. It's one of the top cat cafes in the city.
Temari no Ouchi has 20 cats, each one is like a rock star with a following of fans. There's Kinoko, an exotic short hair who's adorable sour face is unforgettable! In fact, the cafe has several breeds of cats to play with. Besides the cats, there inside looks like an amusement park and the food is very, shall I say Cat Cafe-ish?
Menu is here:
Cat Cafe Review:
Great place! I think the staff was friendly and there is a electronic bell on each table to call for service anytime.
The service seems slow, but that may be because they don't want to put the food on the table when you are playing with the cats.
The Mochi-Mochi Dog was very good! The Fuwa-Fuwa Latte has a paw print on it. Cute! It's an average tasting latte.
The cats are really friendly however, they get sleepy during the afternoon. It's a good idea to buy some of the cat food for 300 yen. The cats can smell it and they all come to play at your table when you open it.
Temari no Ouchi was very clean. It looks like a scene from a Ghibli movie and I felt like Totoro was going to come to say hello at anytime! The restroom is also really cute.
The staff does not speak much English but don't let that stop you! The menu has English and photos on it.
Things you Need to Know:
Cost
There's an entrance charge of 1,600 yen on the weekends, 1,200 on weekdays and 700 yen after 19:00.
This seems expensive but there is no time limit and no pressure to order anything. Most people stay for about 2 hours although there's no rule saying you have to leave until closing.
Menu
A coffee is around 480 yen. It comes in a paper cup with a lid to prevent the cats from drinking it.
Other drinks are between 500 and 600 yen.
Snacks start from 320 yen, but they also have lunch plates that cost around 750 yen.
They serve alcohol. Cocktails and beers between 500 and 550 yen.
The Rules
1) Don't hug the cats!
*Children under 10 are generally not allowed.
2) No flash photography
3) Don't feed the cats human food
4) Don't bring in outside food and drink
Everyone must wash their hands with alcohol at the entrance and there is a sink to wash your hands when you leave as well.
Temari no Ouchi is open from 10:00 to 21:00 daily.

Japan's Cat Island - Incredible!
This is the first video of a special video series featuring Japan's Cat Island! To experience the amazing history and culture of Japan's Cat Island, watch the acclaimed Japanese documentary Cat Heaven Island (English Subtitled):
Watch the Cat Island Video Series. New episodes will be added so be sure to subscribe!
Like Tashirojima, Aoshima island (青島), Ehime, has become one of the popular destinations for the cat lovers. The island has 15 people (between 50-80 years old) and more than 100 cats. There is neither inn, restaurant nor vending machine.
During WWII, many people escaped to the island from the main land. The island population hit the highest of 655 people in 1960. There have not been enough job so many people left the island. On 1976 the island's only primary school shut down. In early 2000 the cat population started to grow while the human population hit then new low, 50. Today you only see 15 people( 4 fishermen and the rest retirees) on the island.
There are nos car or even a bike on the island, so there are real threats to the cats, where they live peacefully among the many abandoned houses.
Another cat island in Japan is Tashirojima Island (田代島) in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, with 86 inhabitants and more than 100 cats. On this island, the cat is enshrined. There is a cat shrine and also a cat photo competition!

Thanks to Frank and Jerry of Zouba Tours: for taking me around. I paid for this tour, but they did a great job and I would recommend them.
Kunming, Yunnan, China - Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan province China. So I was excited to explore the local market in Kunming and eat as much street food as possible!
Here are all the Chinese street food dishes we ate throughout the market:
Rice pudding - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was slightly fermented, and sweet, like a rice alcohol pudding. It was pretty good, but quite sweet, so I couldn’t eat that much of it.
Dumpling - 1 RMB ($0.15) - I saw these dumplings sizzling and hissing and there was no way I could walk by without trying one. Stuffed inside were leek and egg. They were a little on the oily side, but delicious.
Whole duck - 20 RMB ($3.03) - Yunnan is famous for roast duck, and there’s a version that’s comparable even to Beijing style. Style I was excited to find a stall that at the market that specialize in Yunnanese roast duck. It was delicious and the owners were very friendly as well.
Pickled pears - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was an interesting snack, and supposed to be very healthy and good for digestion.
Drink - 2 RMB ($0.30) - This drink was incredible sweet, but refreshing.
Tofu Noodles - 5.5 RMB ($0.83) - Another extremely popular Chinese street food snack at the market was tofu noodles - I’ve had tofu and noodles, but not really mixed before. It was a little plain and starchy, but from all the sauces, it was taty.
Rice balls - 5 RMB ($0.76) - We also tried sesame rice balls which were delicious.
Jacuzzi braised ½ chicken - 15 RMB ($2.27) - This was one of the highlights of the market for me, mainly because the owner was so friendly and his giant jacuzzi of boiling chickens was amazing to see! The chicken was a little bony, but flavorful.
Yellow soybean porridge - 3.5 RMB ($0.53) - As we were leaving the market, we stopped for one last bowl of soybean porridge to eat with youtiau, Chinese donuts. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did, but it was delicious. It was very warming and hearty.
Finally to complete this Chinese street food tour in Kunming, Jerry and I, along with his family ate Chinese Yunnanese bbq. It was tasty and a great way to end this amazing day of street food.
Special thanks to Zouba Tours ( for arranging everything in this video. I paid for this tour, but I think they did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the tour.
That completes Day 4 of this Chinese food tour of Yunnan. If you haven’t already, watch the full series here:

Translation
The summer with you is
in a distant dream
Skyrocket fireworks
that disappeared into the sky
The scent of your hair reached me
The sight of you in a yukata was too dazzling
The night of the festival my heart bounded
In the crowds that seemed about to separate us
Don't leave me I took the hand you held out
Put it in my pocket and held it tight
The summer with you is
in a distant dream
Skyrocket fireworks
that disappeared into the sky
Like a child, too intent on
'kingyo-sukui' your sleeves got wet (1)
Your innocent face was so very cute
I bought cotton candy, your favorite
I was in a good mood but, a little apart
You found some friends and walked away from me
The summer with you is
in a distant dream
Skyrocket fireworks
that disappeared into the sky
In the shrine, we sat on the stone steps
We dazed off absentmindedly in the darkness
We could hear the noise of the festival in the distance
We lit some sparklers with a match
We talked about many things but
I couldn't tell you I liked you
The summer with you is
in a distant dream
Skyrocket fireworks
that disappeared into the sky
The summer with you is in a distant dream
Skyrocket fireworks
that disappeared into the sky
