Tabitha and I hiked to the top of the pinnacles on the Coromandel range. Great day walk and the last 1/2 hour is fun climbing up ladders and steep track. Great views at the top... but it was super windy the day we went. The hike starts in the Kauaeranga Valley near Thames.

The Pinnacles Walk - New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula
In this episode - I take on the Pinnacles Walk which is located on the Coromandel Penninsula on New Zealand's North Island. The track follows an old packhorse route from the early 1920's and offers spectacular 360 degree views of the Coromandel Penninsula. Compared to my other travels in New Zealand, this part of the country felt very unique...it had a very tropical vibe to it. The closest town is Thames and I also want to note that you will have to drive down a gravel road to get to the trailhead. I hope this video helps someone else plan a trip there or at least gives them insight as to what to expect.

Hiking to The Pinnacles - Coromandel Peninsula - New Zealand
The Pinnacles with spectacular views of the Coromandel Peninsula. Our 1st and 2nd attempt combined footage. An intermediate tramping track for a 6-8hours return from the summit, total of 14km. The stunning Kauaeranga Valley, located upriver from Thames is one of New Zealand’s true hidden treasures. Glad to finish this track in a day, you can also book an overnight in the Pinnacles Hut, it is rated as one of New Zealand's most popular overnighters, the DoC(Department of Conservation) hut have 80 beds to accommodate.
Epic drone shots are in the last part, please watch the whole film. Thank you.

Pinnacles day tramp at Coromandel New Zealand.
From the road end car park, walk to the swing bridge to cross the Kauaeranga River and follow the track to the Webb Creek – Moss Creek junction. Follow the Webb Creek Track to Hydro Camp. You'll climb steps that were cut into rock to make the journey easier for the packhorses during the kauri logging era. Care is required in places as the rocks can be slippery. At the top of the climb to the Hydro Camp clearing, the remains of a skidded road are visible beside the track. Skidded roads were made from small logs laid lengthwise with cross pieces forming the ‘skids’. Logs were pulled along the skids by teams of bullocks or steam haulers.
From Hydro Camp junction, take the Pinnacles Track which climbs and sidles around a hill before following a more open ridge. Enjoy impressive views down a branch of the Tairua River and the rugged volcanic landforms of Tauranikau and the Pinnacles.
Pinnacles Hut and Dancing Camp Campsite are a short walk down signposted side tracks. At the Dancing Camp Campsite, look for the remains of the Dancing Camp Dam, built in 1921. This stringer flume dam was the second largest dam in the valley, and was partly restored in 1994.

First adventure of the year - Coromandel Pinnacles
It was a 2.5 hour hike up to the Pinnacles Hut. We spent the night at the hut and climbed the final leg up to the summit the following morning before descending back to the car park.
It was fog and rain all throughout our trip so we never actually got to see the view but I think the fog added an element of beauty to the landscape.
The hut itself was really well maintained and quite cheap to stay at.
Overall, despite the abysmal weather, it was a good time! Would recommend!

A beautiful hike on the Coromandel Peninsula, just outside of Thames. We went up the Billygoat Track and came down Webb Creek Trail to make a 17.5km loop. Stunning views and a fun hike to start our first anniversary celebrations!

The Pinnacles in Coromandel, New Zealand [GoPro]
A daywalk up the Kauri Trail to bag The Pinnacles offers a combination of interesting history, a precarious summit, and a good introduction New Zealand tramping. The track is generally very well maintained and constructed, and although the addition of steps has removed much of the final scramble to the summit, there is still a tricky section of ladders at the very end. It's proximity to Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga, make The Pinnacles an excellent weekend peak bagging trip for almost 50% of New Zealand's population.
