Another jewel hidden in the Fjords, in the small village of Kaupanger.
Kaupanger stave church is very unique in many regards and is another fantastic landmark in Norway.
Norway - Kaupanger stavkirke (stave church)
Kaupanger in Sogn og Fjordane was built in 1137 and is one of the oldest stave churches. It has been rebuilt and enlarged and was even painted white like other churches in Norway a hundred years ago. However the medieval construction is intact and it is regarded as a well preserved church.

A Norwegian treasure - interior of a medieval wooden stave church - HQ
Use the HQ-button! I dug out an old mini-DV video tape, tested out a format conversion, tried to rework the video colors just a little bit, and - at the same time - I revisited the interior of the Uvdal Stave Church, built around 1168 AD.

The church has one of the most beautiful interiors of the preserved medieval Norwegian wooden stave churches. I did this video recording for the web site Numedalsnett many many years ago. The owner - Fortidsminneforeningen in Norway - said OK to the shooting, but they wouldn't allow much lights or electricity. The church itself has no electricity installed.

I apologise for the bad audio quality in this specific video. There was a lot of wind and noise and, due to lack of equipment and time to do a proper voice-over, this was the best achievable quality. I hope it doesn't annoy anyone. Thanks for watching!

The local brass band and the choir, are getting ready to entertain outside the church. Early morning on Norway's Independents Day.
The church was build in about 1140, on the remains of 2 older churches.

Urnes stave Church Norway
Norway`s oldest stave Church, built around 1130. Wood in the building are dated back to the middle of year 900. Urnes Stave Church was enlisted on the UNESCO world Heritage list in 1979. The stave Church was saved and owned by Fortidsminneforeningen in 1881.
Urnes stave Church is located deep into the beautiful Lustrafjord in Luster municipality, Sogn og Fjordane, The green coloured fjord is due to water from the glaciers up into the Mountains.
The Stave Church is really worth a visit, and it is open to the Public from 2nd May to 30th September. A Ferry takes you from Solvorn to Urnes every hour, or you could drive around by using the narrow but Scenic road from Skjolden.

(EN) Heddal stave church (Bokmål Heddal stavkirke, Nynorsk Heddal stavkyrkje) is a stave church located at Heddal in Notodden municipality, Norway.
The church is a triple nave stave church and is Norway's largest stave church. It was constructed at the beginning of the 13th century. After the reformation, the church was in a very poor condition, and a restoration took place during 1849–1851. However, because the restorers lacked the necessary knowledge and skills, yet another restoration was necessary in the 1950s. The interior is marked by the period after the Lutheran Reformation in 1536–1537 and is for a great part a result of the restoration that took place in the 1950s. (Wikipedia).

Urnes Stave Church, The oldest of them all, the queen of Stave Churches, and the last of these magical landmarks that we visit in this saga of fascination and discovery.
Urnes is a UNESCO world heritage site and sits in the remote village of Ornes, in the Luster municaipality. It was a great privilege to finally see this amazing token of both Viking and Christian legacy.
