Kaupanger is a village situated along the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in the municipality of Sogndal in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It sits along the Norwegian National Road 5, about 12 kilometres southeast of the municipal centre of Sogndalsfjøra and about 8 kilometres northeast of the Sogndal Airport, Haukåsen. Kaupanger IL is a sports club located in Kaupanger. The 0.87-square-kilometre village has a population of 931, giving the village a population density of 1,135 inhabitants per square kilometre .

1. Kaupanger Stave Church Kaupanger
Kaupanger Stave Church is the largest stave church in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is located in the village of Kaupanger in Sogndal Municipality, on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden. It is still in use as a parish church, having been in use continuously since its completion in the mid-12th century. The church is part of the Kaupanger parish in the Indre Sogn deanery in the Diocese of Bjørgvin.The church is a Norwegian Cultural Heritage Site. The nave is supported by 22 staves , 8 on each of the longer sides and 3 on each of the shorter. The elevated chancel is carried by 4 free standing staves. The church has the largest number of staves to be found in any one stave church. It is the largest of the five stave churches in Sogn og Fjordane county.

Norway - Nærøyfjorden revisited

West Norwegian Fjords is no. 1195 on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This video is from the Nærøyfjord. It was filmed and photographed in 2012, 14 years after my first visit and video. The video starts on the car ferry in Kaupanger and follows the journey south across the Sognefjord, into the Aurlandsfjord and finally the 17 km long Nærøyfjord.

This is how UNESCO describes it:

Situated in south-western Norway, north-east of Bergen, Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, set 120 km from one another, are part of the west Norwegian fjord landscape, which stretches from Stavanger in the south to Andalsnes, 500 km to the north-east. The two fjords, among the world's longest and deepest, are considered as archetypical fjord landscapes and among the most scenically outstanding anywhere. Their exceptional natural beauty is derived from their narrow and steep-sided crystalline rock walls that rise up to 1,400 m from the Norwegian Sea and extend 500 m below sea level. The sheer walls of the fjords have numerous waterfalls while free-flowing rivers cross their deciduous and coniferous forests to glacial lakes, glaciers and rugged mountains. The landscape features a range of supporting natural phenomena, both terrestrial and marine, such as submarine moraines and marine mammals.

Day 3 of the Norway Vlog continues in this episode. The day as I mentioned in a previous vlog post started out on a high note, but it ended very sadly for me at least (you'll find out why)

The drive from Kaupanger to Nystuen, Norway should be considered one of the most beautiful drives I've ever been on. You see the fjords, the Icelandic landscapes, and more than a couple waterfalls. What a place!
