KAWAGOE Festival - Japanese Matsuri near Tokyo
Exploring Kawagoe and the annual festival in an older area less than an hour from Tokyo - a perfect day trip from Tokyo.
Kawagoe is known for the Warehouse District, an area with beautiful old Edo-style buildings called Kurazukuri. The famous landmark of the area is the bell tower. In October they have their annual Kawagoe Matsuri, with floats, music, dancing and Japanese street food. We were lucky to be able to experience a Japanese festival, which was even more magical at night time!

Untouched Kawagoe : Nostalgic and Cheap Sweet Treats【Moving Japan】
“If you want to see Edo, then go to Kawagoe.”
Koedo Kawagoe was a town that flourished for merchants during the Edo period. This scenery still remains today and is a popular tourist destination for foreigners.
Today we will be introducing Kashiya Yokocho, or Candy Alley, which is an especially popular place for tourists in Kawagoe.

The Kurazukuri Street (蔵造りの町並み, Kuradukuri no machinami?) is a section of a street lined with traditional warehouses constructed in a style called kurazukuri (蔵造り?) and maintains the old outlook of what the place was like during the Edo period. The city of Kawagoe started seeing kurazukuri-style warehouses in the aftermath of a great fire that consumed one-third of the old Kawagoe in 1893. Within and beyond the Kurazukuri Street, many warehouses from the 18 and 19 centuries can still be seen. The Kawagoe Kurazukuri Museum is located in a traditional warehouse built in 1893 and allows its visitors to walk around inside and experience the life of Edo merchants.

KAWAGOE SAITAMA - DJI OSMO POCKET
Kawagoe (川越) is located about 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo and is suitable as a day trip destination. Its main street, lined with Kurazukuri (clay-walled warehouse-styled) buildings, retains an ambience reminiscent of an old town from the Edo Period (1603-1867) and allows us to imagine the streets from past centuries. Thereby, Kawagoe became known as Little Edo.

Japan Vlog #14: 'Koedo' (old Tokyo) Kawagoe town - old warehouse
We walked around a town in Kawagoe city in Saitama prefecture. The street has a view of old warehouse like as in the Edo period (1800s Tokyo). It was fun to see the old town with the ancient atmosphere. We then had Japanese green tea mochi (rice cake) desert and green tea soft ice cream, it was yummy!
It's worth a visit Kawagoe, if you have longer holiday in Tokyo. It's about 1 hour away from metro Tokyo. Walkable from JR Kawagoe station.

Established in 1993, the Edo-Tokyo Museum displays the history of Tokyo during the Edo (江戸) period. The main features of the permanent exhibitions include a life-size replica of the Nihonbashi (日本橋, meaning Japan Bridge), which was the bridge leading into Edo; the Nakamuraza (中村座) theater; and scale models of towns and buildings from the Edo, Meiji (明治時代) and Shōwa (昭和時代) periods. The museum is adjacent to the Ryōgoku Kokugikan (両国国技館). It was designed by Kiyonori Kikutake (菊竹 清訓). The distinctive elevated shape of the museum building is modeled after an old storehouse in the kurazukuri (蔵造り) style.
The Edo period (江戸時代/Edo jidai) or Tokugawa period (徳川時代/Tokugawa jidai) is the period between 1603 and 1868 in the history of Japan, when Japanese society was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate and the country's 300 regional daimyo (大名).
Address: 1-4-1 Yokoami, Sumida, Tokyo, Japan
The museum is located about five minutes walk from Ryogoku Station (両国駅, Ryōgoku-eki).

Visiting Hon Kawagoe | AN ADVENTURE THROUGH TIME
Hon Kawagoe is an old town from the Edo period, when the samurai were at the height of their reign. We took a 30 minute ride on the Seibu Yellow Line and after grabbing some wifi at a Starbucks we set off on our adventure.
We grabbed the Koedo Famous Locations Loop bus to Nakain, the middle of three temples that together make up the Three Temple Complex in Hon Kawagoe. Famous for being the origin of Kawagoe and Sayama Tea, it was originally the main temple until Tenkai Soujou came to Kitain to live. Of the three temples, Nakain has the best photo opportunities with cheery blossoms blooming even in winter. Unlike their spring counterparts the winter cherries are not as lush but a perfect compliment to winter nonetheless.
We continued our adventure on foot, stopping at various shrines and local temples along the way. We made it to a small town flea market, where I stopped by a fox shrine, learning that people will leave good booze at the shrine for good luck - but also because the fox spirit likes to get boozie.
We wanted to make it to Toki no-Kane or the Tower of Time by 15:00 to take part in the ringing of the bell ceremony - but still having some time we went to Honmaru Goten (本丸御殿), meaning the palace in the inner-most circle of defense, or what's left of it. Honmaru Goten is the only surviving building of the former Kawagoe Castle and while it's not big, the inner garden is beautiful - plus it's free to get in!
There is a museum right across the street so we visited. I took some video of it, even though it was not allowed...but then I lost the footage so here we are - regardless, it's an interesting twist of fate.
As the time for the ringing of the bell ceremony neared we made our way to the Kawagoe Warehouse District or Kurazukuri Street. The district is known for its' Edo period architecture and the many traditional style shops. There are a few gems along the side streets as well, but you'll wanna watch the video to find out what they are C:.
