Description
Paddling the Murray River in High Flows
Filmed on 13/10/16 (flows into SA of 48,000ML/day) (sorry - It's wrong at the start of the video) to show what high-than-usual flows actually look like on the water. Currently at Lock 4 the water level is only about 30cm higher than normal. High flows are an exciting opportunity, filling up the wetlands and creek-beds that might usually be dry, giving the land a good drink, and allowing exploration via kayak into lots of nooks and crannies that are not normally accessible. As you can see, the water is not a raging torrent at the moment; - just moving a little more quickly than normal - so take normal water-sport precautions, and don't do anything on the river without a pfd. Ruby's Very Big Year - 1000km paddling challenge
I enthusiastically recommend doing the Very Big Year. It's a big commitment but very much worth it!
The Very Big Year is a 1000km paddling challenge started by Sydney Harbour Kayaks in an effort to increase participation in the many ultra-marathon paddling events in Australia. The 1000km of events must be completed in one year, must include at least one race in another state, and must include one of the big flagship events, like the Massive Murray Paddle. As an extra bonus, you must complete at least one race with a single blade (canoe, SUP or outrigger) and one with a double blade (kayak).
I completed 16 races: PaddleNSW Marathon Series (including State Champs), Burley Griffin Dash, Riverland Paddling Marathon, Myall Classic, Hawkesbury Canoe Classic, Massive Murray Paddle and the Burley Griffin 24 Hour Challenge (double entry K1 relay and Canoe).
I made so many new friends, spent a lot of time with old friends, especially enjoyed the multi-day ultra-marathons, benefited from seeing some beautiful scenery, got very fit, developed some very effective callouses and surprised myself by enjoying the canoeing (will try more later). I became closer to my husband, especially when we paddled the Murray together, but also ferrying to and from major races.
I have so many people to thank for boat loans, photography (Ian Wrenford LCRK that's you!) and just mental support. I borrowed boats from my clubs, from Brett Greenwood (+ Marilyn Golden), Sue Mueller, Scott Harris, Terry Reilly and Rob Hardy. The race organisers are so dedicated and put so many hours into setting up the events and running them. And a big thanks to both my clubs - Manly Warringah Kayak Club and Lane Cove River Kayakers for their support, training and companionship throughout the year!
Along the way I raised a bit of money for charity: $1253.12 for Orange Sky Laundry (Massive Murray) and $285 for the Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation (Hawkesbury).
