Keawe Adventures Hike Diamond Head (Leahi) in 20minutes
Makani goes up to Diamond Head (Leahi). It took him 20mins. That's a very good time considering the foot traffic at that time of day. 11am-11:20am. So here's a taste
More of this footage to come.
Kaena Point | Hawaii
We did this hike right after the Pink Pillbox Hike in Waianae so we were pretty tired! Still, so worth it~
Pink Pillbox
We started on the south side of the point and parked at Kaʻena State Park. This is an easy flat coastal hike with gorgeous views of the western tip of Oahu. They say at certain times of the year you can see monk seals! You can go as far as you want, it is a nice nature preserve. Since we were tired we only did 1.5 miles in and 1.5 miles out. Next time, we plan to go all the way to the tip !
You can also hike to the point from the Haleiwa or North Shore side.

Hawaii Trip
In November of 2015, I visited the 50th state to join the U.S.: Hawai’i. When I first planned to go a year before, my mom told me, “You’re taking me with you,” and later my sister was on the trip making it a 3-person adventure. I had never been to Hawai’i, my mom had last been to Hawai’i about 43 years ago so she was certainly itching to return, and my sister had only been at the Honolulu airport.
This video is the trip from my perspective as there were a couple of activities that I partook in that my mom and sister did not.
The trip itinerary went as follows:
Day 1 - fly from home (DC area for my mom and me, Tampa area for my sister) to Honolulu on Oahu (we had a connection in Salt Lake City) and check out some of Waikiki
Day 2 - visit the Foster Botanical Garden and later go hiking at Diamond Head
Day 3 - bus tour of Pearl Harbor, Punchbowl Crater, and downtown Honolulu before seeing Rainbow Tower where my mom had stayed the last time she was in Hawai’i
Day 4 - swimming at Waikiki Beach, road trip around the island of Oahu where we stopped at Hanauma Bay, many lookouts, and watched the sunset at Sunset Point (we made it about a minute before the sun started dipping below the horizon) before checking out Waimea Beach and heading back to Honolulu
Day 5 - flying to Hilo, checking in at the hotel, and exploring Moku o Lo’e (Coconut Island)
Day 6 - I went hiking through Hilo starting at the Boiling Pots along the Wailuku River, checking out Rainbow Falls, going into downtown Hilo, and seeing the Japanese gardens
Day 7 - I went on a doors-off helicopter tour of the lava flows, waterfalls, and downtown Hilo before walking to meet up with my mom and sister for dinner
Day 8 - road trip where we checked out Rainbow Falls (this time it was sunny, so there was an actual rainbow), the Mauna Loa macadamia nut factory, Volcanoes National Park, and eventually made it to Kona in the dark
Day 9 - road trip to see the Mauna Kea observatory visitor center, then to Hilo, then flying to the island of Kaua’i and watching surfers at Nawiliwili Bay
Day 10 - we checked out Waimea Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”), an old Russian 19th century fort, salt ponds, and swam with fish at Poipu Beach
Day 11 - visited the Kauai sugarcane plantation, went on a train ride around the plantation, checked out Wailua Falls, stopped at Wailua Beach, watched some hula dancing near Wailua, and checked out the stars at night over Nawiliwili Bay before heading to the airport to take red-eyes back to the mainland
Day 12 - watching out the window as we lost 5 hours of the day and went from eating breakfast before our 2nd flight to it being past dinnertime when we landed in Dulles
Hawai’i is an amazing place, and I hope you all get to go there and experience it.
All videos were taken by me with my iPhone 4S and Pentax WG-3.
The satellite image of Hawai’i was taken by NASA. All other photos were taken by me, my sister, or my mom with my iPhone 4S and Pentax WG-3.

Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail Hike| Traveling Vlog | Nepali Brewboy Channel
The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail, also known as the Kaiwi Scenic Shoreline, is the second most popular of all the Oahu hiking trails, next to the Diamond Head Hike. This easy to moderate summit trail is definitely one of the most memorable, with stunning views overlooking Makapuu Beach, Koko Head, the windward coast, and Molokai & Lanai neighboring islands. You will also discover some exciting points of interest along the way including Makapuu Point, old military pillboxes, giant tide pools, a hidden blowhole, and the popular Makapuu lighthouse landmark.
The Makapuâu Point trail, within Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, offers outstanding views of Oâahuâs southeastern coastline, including Koko Head and Koko Crater. From the trailâs destination at Makapuâu Head, one is rewarded with magnificent views of the windward coast and offshore islets, as well as the historic red-roofed Makapuâu Lighthouse built in 1909, which makes a stunning picture against the deep blue sea below (the lighthouse itself is off-limits). On a clear day, you may even see Molokaâi and Lanaâi. The offshore islets are wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian seabirds, such as the âiwa, frigate bird, and tropicbird. This trail is an excellent place to view migrating humpback whales in season (November â May). Binoculars are suggested for viewing the whales and seabirds. An interpretive sign and viewing scope along the trail help you view and identify the whales seen from this location.
This portion of the island tends to be hot and dry and the vegetation includes low-growing kiawe and panini (cactus). The trail is exposed and is usually sunny and hot. It can be very windy at the summit. A hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water are recommended. Give yourself about 2 hours to enjoy this hike and itâs wonderful views.

A Cultural Approach to Native Hawaiian Mental Health
Mental health disproportionately impacts kānaka across Hawaiʻi, from keiki to kūpuna. It is linked to suicide, substance use, partner violence, homelessness, incarceration, and numerous issues in our community. Right now the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is working through legislation to secure mental health programs and services rooted in Hawaiian culture. Research shows that culturally-based programs are four times more successful in addressing these needs and by connecting our people with their culture, we are supporting Native Hawaiian well-being.
Senate Bill 193: Relating to the Composition of the State Council on Mental Health would require three of the 21 members of the Hawai‘i State Mental Health Council to have demonstrated knowledge or work experience involving Native Hawaiian concepts of well-being, culturally-grounded mental health methodologies, or traditional healing or health practices to better address current mental health needs.
We need your kōkua to make this bill possible. Please take a moment to learn more about SB193, a bill asking for Hawaiian cultural representation on the Hawaiʻi State Mental Health Council. Click the green button to submit email testimony in support of the bill at oha.org/legislation.
