Discovering Western Kentucky, the Kentucky Lakes, the Land Between the Lakes, the Kentucky Dam
We find the perfect campsite to watch the eclipse, putting our roadtrip in pause at the Kentucky Lakes / Prizer Point KOA. During the next two days we explored the area, beginning with the small town of Cadiz, the Land Between the Lakes, we eat at Patti's in Grand Rivers, and explored Kuttawa, Paducah, and the Kentucky Dam, which controls the flow of water into the Mississippi River.

The Kentucky Dam in Western Kentucky, Land Between the Lakes, Great Blue Heron
Kentucky Dam is a dam on the Tennessee River on the dividing line between Livingston and Marshall Counties in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It impounds Kentucky Lake, which is 184 miles long, and is the largest artificial lake in the eastern United States, at 160,000 acres, with a shoreline of 2,380 miles . Its 4,008,000 acre feet of flood storage capacity are used to reduce flooding on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. It has saved an estimated $200 million in flood damage to approximately 6 million acres of land in the lower Ohio and Mississippi valleys. is one of nine Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) dams on the Tennessee River. It is 22 miles upstream of the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers near Paducah, Kentucky. An American Nuclear Tragedy: A Little Known Nuclear Facility in Paducah, Kentucky
mirrored on Nov 18, 2013
The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant is a facility that produces enriched uranium for nuclear power plants. The plant is owned by D.O.E. and operated by United States Enrichment Corporation, a subsidiary of USEC Incorporated. It is the only operating uranium enrichment facility in the United States.
One worker involved in cleaning the pipes, Joe Harding, took a disability discharge from the plant in 1971 and later unsuccessfully brought suit against the DOE charging that he had been disabled by radiation poisoning. Harding had compiled a list of 50 cancer deaths among his 200 coworkers. The Energy Department blamed Harding's illnesses on smoking and the fact that he frequently ate country ham. He was denied a pension, and after his death in 1980 his widow had to sell their home.
In 1983, as part of the failed lawsuit, Harding's body was exhumed for testing, and uranium was found in his bones, at levels ranging from 133 to 97,000 times the level that would have been expected. The results of these tests were never publicized.

Kentucky Historic Flood
This is a video I have put together from the recent historic flooding in Kentucky. It is a compilation of video and photos that I have collected over the last week. This video has three major areas. Bee Rock Campground, Mouth of the Laurel (Noe's Dock) and Cumberland Falls. Even though this historic flooding has broken many records both here as well as Wolf Creek Dam, at the end of all the flooding and devastation one can find beauty in the end; which is symbolic to the end of this video.
