Jama, Kevda and Nagina Masjid (Champaner - Gujarat - India)
(EN) Champaner is a historical city in the state of Gujarat, in western India. It is located in Panchmahal district, 47 kilometres from the city of Vadodara. The city was briefly the capital of Gujarat.
It was founded by Vanraj Chavda, the most prominent king of the Chavda Kingdom, in the 8th century. He named it after the name of his friend and general Champa, also known later as Champaraj. By the later 15th century, the Khichi Chauhan Rajputs held Pavagadh fort above the town of Champaner. The young Sultan of Gujarat, Mahmud Begada, deciding to attack Champaner, started towards it with his army on 4 December 1482. After defeating the Champaner army, Mahmud captured the town and besieged Pavagadh, the well-known hill-fortress, above Champaner, where king Jayasimha had taken refuge. He captured the Pavagadh fort on 21 November 1484, after a siege of 20 months. He then spent 23 years rebuilding and embellishing Champaner, which he renamed Muhammadabad, after which he moved the capital there from Ahmedabad. The town finally succumbed to attacks from the Mughal Emperor Humayun in 1535.
Champaner is today the site of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, which UNESCO designated a World Heritage Site in 2004.
Sultan Begada also built a magnificent Jama Masjid in Champaner, which ranks amongst the finest architectural edifices in Gujarat. It is an imposing structure on a high plinth, with a central dome, two minarets 30 meters in height, 172 pillars, seven mihrabs, and carved entrance gates with fine stone jalis.
The 2001 film Lagaan is set in Champaner.

Kevada Masjid (also Kewda or Kevda) is a mosque in Champaner, Gujarat state, western India. It is part of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mosque has minarets, globe-like domes, and narrow stairs.According to Ruggles (2008), nature was integrated into the Kevada mosque's architecture in a way that was unusual elsewhere in the Islamic world.
This mosque was built in Champaner during the time of Mahmud Begada, as were several other masjids, such as the Bawaman, Ek Minar, Jama, Khajuri, Nagina, and Shahar Ki.After James Burgess and Henry Cousens wrote descriptions of the Kevada, Jama, and Nagina Masjids, roads were built to reach them.The Kevada is notable because of its mausoleum. Kathra Masjid is west of the Kevada.
The masjid has many mehrabs, all intricately carved. There is a damaged brick tank for ablutions before prayers are offered at the mosque. The centotaph is square in shape with a fluted central dome and four corner domes; it is located next to the tank. The layout of the masjid is rectangularFloral and geometrical designs adorn the niches. The tribate inter-columns are considered attractive. The prayer hall, a double storied structure, had three domes but the central dome has since disappeared. The windows have balconies built over pillars with intricate carved decorations. There are two minarets, which are also decorated with intricate carvings.Restoration works were carried out in the 1890s.

Kevada Masjid is rectangular on plan with a double storeyed main prayer hall. The two minarets on either side of the central arched entrance are beautifully carved and niches are filled with floral and geometrical designs. The windows provided with pillared balcony are beautiful and exquisitely decorated. Originally the mosque had three domes built above the prayer hall but the largest central dome has collapsed. The complex also comprises of a well, tank for ablutions and a few ruined brick structures.The square cenotaph located in front of the mosque has fluted central dome and four corner domes.

Old Masjid Of Champaner | Gujarat Tourism
Jama Masjid in Champaner, Gujarat state, western India, is part of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is among the 114 monuments there which are listed by the Baroda Heritage Trust.
Jami Masjid, also known as Jama Masjid of Champaner is located about 150 feet (46 m) east of the city walls. Dating back to the 15th century, it is widely considered as one of the finest mosques in western India.
This edifice is two storied and is a symbol of both Islamic and Hindu(specifically Gujarati) styles of architecture. Like the other mosques around the world, the Jami Masjid also has a very minutely designed entrance which is flanked by two towering octagonal minarets. Along with modern techniques of architecture, this mosque also reflects how the architects used modern techniques to cultivate rainwater harvesting systems. One of the minarets is a tad bit damaged. This is not because it has been worn out but because of an intentional gun firing in 1812 by a Scindia Governor named Patankar. The monument has some very majestic artwork on its symmetric pillars and all this has been conserved very well.
