SILVER-BACK PALM CONSERVATION PROJECT AT KHAO PHRA TAEW.
A conservation project to re-populate 100 rare silver-back palms in Khao Phra Taew forest was opened by Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut on January 13, at Phra Taew Nature and Wildlife Study Center in Pa Khlok area.
Unique only in this forest, silver-back palms were discovered by an Irish botanist around 80 years ago. As it is indigenous to this area, it is sometimes called Palm Chao Mueang Thalang, ปาล์มเจ้าเมืองถลาง meaning Thalang's Ruler Palm.
In an attempt to conserve the species and also to honor HRH Princess Sirindhorn's Plant Species Conservation Project, Phra Taew Nature and Wildlife Study Center has planted 100 saplings of silver-back palms in the forest a year ago.
Today the palms' growth is being reviewed and the plants fed with fertilizer by local school children and those participated. Phuket Governor also released 100 butterflies into the forest to help re-balance natural environment.

น้ำตกบางแป Bang Pae Waterfall in Phuket 2016
Bang Pae Waterfall at Khao Phra Thaeo National Park in Thalang, north of Phuket Town is a popular recreational spot for islanders. They use the site as a picnic place and for a fun swimming destination in the wet season, as well as enjoying a meal at the restaurants near the car park, by the lake and outside the gates.
It is Phuket's biggest waterfall but by international standards it’s quite a small affair. Still, visitors appreciate the cool water, shade and exotic surroundings. Many local hiking enthusiasts hike extensively in the nearby hills and countryside
Phuket Thailand - Paradise on Earth
Phuket Thailand - Paradise on Earth
Phuket is Thailand's largest at 48km in length and 21km at its widest. It's in Southern Thailand, on the west-facing Andaman Sea coastline, suspended from the southern tip of Phang Nga Province by a pair of short but substantial road bridges.
Phuket island in the Andaman Sea, has some of Thailand’s most popular beaches, mainly situated along the clear waters of the western shore. The island is home to many high-end seaside resorts, spas and restaurants. Phuket City, the capital, has old shophouses and busy markets. Patong, the main resort town, has many nightclubs, bars and discos.
Phuket Town is the largest town in Phuket Province. It has a population of 63,000 and is the economic hub of the island. For the most part just an ordinary, scruffy provincial Thai town, it's hardly a major tourist attraction, but the Chinatown area is worth a quick look and there are some great Thai-style shopping opportunities too. Overall, accommodation and food in the town is cheaper than near the beaches, and can provide a refreshing change of pace.
Regions of Phuket :
Western Phuket (Bang Thao, Kamala, Karon, Kata, Laem Sing, Mai Khao, Nai Thon and Nai Yang, Patong, Surin)
Southeastern Phuket (Chalong Bay, Cape Panwa, Nai Han, Rawai, Ya Nui)
Interior Phuket (Bang Rong, Ko Sire, Phuket Town, Phra Taew National Park, Thalang)
Small islands southern-eastern Phuket and Phang Nga Bay (Ko Bon, Ko Hae, Ko Lon, Ko Mai Thon, Ko Racha, Ko Maphrao, Ko Naka, Ko Yao, Ko Panyi, Ko Tapu (James Bond Island))
Cities of Phuket :
Chalong Bay — home to Phuket's most popular yacht anchorage and the primary gateway to the islands off Phuket
Kamala — a quieter beach to the north of Patong
Karon — the second most-developed beach after Patong
Kata — busy, clean tourist beaches with good surf, split into Kata Yai and Kata Noi Beaches
Nai Thon and Nai Yang — two quiet beaches in Sirinat National Park
Patong — the largest beach resort, known for its night life
Phuket Town — the administrative centre of the province, and the island's main population centre
Rawai — set off point for lots of local islands, popular with locals for eating on the water front
Surin — an up-and-coming up-market destination
Phuket is hot and humid throughout the year. The hot season is generally considered to be from March to early May. During the summer monsoon season from May to October, mornings and afternoons are still sunny and clear, but it tends to rain in the evenings and water clarity goes down. Locals consider November to February the cool season, and the weather is quite tolerable, much more so than in the tourism centres around the Gulf coast. It's comparable to Florida's summer weather in temperature and intensity of rain storms: 25-33°C, flying clouds, short and thunderous rainfalls in the afternoons and evenings. Surfing is possible off the western beaches.

Phuket project fights gibbon extinction
Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, Khao Phra Taew National Park, Phuket - 6th-7th October 2008

4. Susannah Waters, GRP volunteer and Owart Maprang, Ecological Science Manager, GRP, feeding blonde gibbon.
5. Close of blonde gibbon eating.
6. Blonde gibbon retrieving food from especially designed wooden box.
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Susannah Waters, Gibbon Rehabilitation Project Volunteer:
This gibbon here is Tam, and she used to be a pet, and she is a great example of why gibbons are unsuitable pets, because she got to an age when she was starting to become a bit unpredictable. They reach sexual maturity, they get big canine teeth, and quite strong. She went to bite her owner's child, and her owner retaliated quite severely, beat her up really badly, and the wounds got infected, so she needed to have amputations halfway along her right arm and left leg as well. And she's also lost most of the fingers on her left hand as well. So obviously she would never be able to be released. She wouldn't survive out in the wild.
8. Close of Tam, blonde gibbon with amputated legs, eating.
10. Owart Maprang, Ecological Science Manager, GRP, turning on water tap at gibbon cage.
11. SOUNDBITE (Thai) Owart Maprang, Ecological Science Manager, Gibbon Rehabilitation Project:
When we check the gibbons' health, we check their faeces, their fur, and their eyes to see that they can see normally. We also check their arms and legs to see if there are any cuts or anything abnormal. We look at their movements to see that they can move normally. For the female gibbons, we check their genitals to see if they are pregnant or if they are menstruating.

Owart: You see some.
Susannah: Yea, there's one there. New one is there.
Owart: Is that the mom?
Susannah: I thinkI can't see Nantik
Owart: She's sitting there.
Susannah: Oh yeah.

LEAD-IN:
Twenty-five years ago, gibbons on the island of Phuket in southern Thailand were poached to extinction.
The animals were captured to supply the overseas pet trade, for their meat, and to wean dollars from tourists.
The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is now helping to bring the local population back from the brink.
STORYLINE:
Every morning the area surrounding Khao Phra Taew National Park on the island of Phuket in Thailand echoes with the beautiful and distinct sounds of gibbons singing to one other.
But for many years, the animals' calls were simply not heard here.
In the 1970s and 80s gibbons were hunted to extinction in Phuket. They had become prized as pets around the world and for traditional food and medicine.
Susannah Waters is a volunteer from Australia.

Siam Safari in Phuket Thailand
iTravel Channel went to one of Thailand’s top ecotourism and conservation attractions, Siam Safari in Phuket.
If you’re traveling to the Land of Smiles, Siam Safari is an attraction you definitely do not want to miss. Started in 1989, the company is one of Thailand’s longest-running ecotourism projects and one of the pioneers of environmentalism and conservation in the southern provinces.
Located in Phuket, Siam Safari started over 20 years ago as a conservation project for elephants that were left displaced after Thailand made their use for the logging industry illegal. Soon after, they began providing elephant trekking as a means for these elephants to continue with a purpose and daily routine of work. For elephants that had been working their whole lives, they needed such an activity to carry on – in fact, elephants have been working in Thailand for centuries.
Today, Siam Safari is an important destination for tourists to learn about why elephants are so special to Thai culture and also the importance of saving them from human dangers like illegal poaching for their tusks. The company offers a “four-in-one” half day safari where tourists can learn about traditional Thai activities like making coconut milk and oil, rice-farming and the tapping of rubber trees.
Most importantly, Siam Safari is an opportunity for people to get up close and personal with Thai elephants. Not only can they take a ride through the jungle on these beautiful creatures, they also get to feed them and interact with their young.
There are many elephant camps on the island of Phuket, but the sad reality is not all of them treat their elephants with kindness and respect. That is why supporting Siam Safari, and its many projects including elephant conservation and in Phuket, is so important. It’s the only elephant camp in southern Thailand certified by the Royal Thai Government.

Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, located in the Andaman Sea of southern Thailand. The island is mostly mountainous with a mountain range in the west of the island from the north to the south. The mountains of Phuket form the southern end of the Phuket mountain range, which ranges for 440 kilometres (270 mi) from the Kra Isthmus. Although some recent geographical works refer to the sections of the Tenasserim Hills in the isthmus as the Phuket Range, these names are not found, however, in classical geographic sources. In addition, the name Phuket is relatively recent having previously been named Jung Ceylon and Thalang. The highest elevation of the island is usually regarded as Khao Mai Thao Sip Song (Twelve Canes), at 529 metres (1,736 ft) above sea level. However it has been reported by barometric pressure readings that there is an even higher elevation (with no apparent name), of 542 meters above sea level, in the Kamala hills behind Kathu waterfall. Its population was 249,446 in 2000, rising to 525,018 in the 2010 decennial census, the highest growth rate of all provinces nationwide at 7.4% annual, some 600,000 people reside in Phuket currently,[12] among them migrants, international expats, Thais registered in other provinces and locals. The registered population, however, includes only Thais, and the end of 2012 was 360,905 people.[13]
It is estimated that Phuket has a total area of approximately 576 square kilometres (222 sq mi) (including the province's other islands). Phuket is approximately 536 miles (863 km) south of Bangkok, and covers an area of 543 square kilometres (210 sq mi) excluding small islets. Other Islands are : Ko Lone 4.77 square kilometres (1.84 sq mi), Ko Maprao 3.7 square kilometres (1.4 sq mi), Ko Naka Yai 2.08 square kilometres (0.80 sq mi), Ko Racha Noi3.06 square kilometres (1.18 sq mi), Ko Racha Yai 4.5 square kilometres (1.7 sq mi), and the second biggest, Ko Sire 8.8 square kilometres (3.4 sq mi) (It is also the 2nd most popolated in Mu Ko Phuket.
It is estimated that if all its 39 other small islands are included, Phuket Province will cover an area of 576 square kilometres (222 sq mi). The island total length, from north to south, is estimated at 30 miles (48 km) and 13 miles (21 km) wide.[14]
Phuket's topography is exceptional with 70 percent of its area covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. It has a total of 9 brooks and creeks but does not have any major rivers.
Forest, rubber and palm oil plantations cover 60% of the island.[citation needed] The western coast has several sandy beaches, while on the east coast beaches are more often muddy. Near the southernmost point is Laem Promthep (Brahma's Cape), which is a popular sunset viewing point. In the mountainous north of the island is the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-hunting Area, protecting more than 20 km² of rainforest. The three highest peaks of this reserve are the Khao Prathiu (384 metres (1,260 ft)), Khao Bang Pae 388 metres (1,273 ft) and Khao Phara 422 metres (1,385 ft). The Sirinat National Park on the northwestern coast was established in 1981 and protects an area of 90 square kilometres (35 sq mi) (68 kilometres (42 mi) marine area), including the Nai Yang beach where sea turtles lay their eggs.
One of the most popular (and overcrowded) tourist areas on Phuket is Patong Beach on the central western coast, perhaps owing to the easy access to its wide and long beach. Most of Phuket's nightlife and its cheap shopping is located in Patong, and the area has become increasingly developed. Patong means the forest filled with banana leaves in Thai. Other popular beaches are located south of Patong. In a counterclockwise direction these include Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, and around the southern tip of the island, Nai Harn Beach and Rawai. To the north of Patong are Kamala Beach, Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach. These areas are generally much less developed than Patong, and sought out by individuals, families and other groups with a preference for more relaxed and less crowded environs than Patong. There are many islands to the southeast, including Bon Island, just a short boat trip away. There are several coral islands to the south of Phuket, the Similan Islands lie to the north west, and Phi Phi Islands to the south east. Islanders engage in a lively tourist trade, catering to snorkellers and scuba divers.
