Khe Sanh Combat Base, Vietnam
Our visit to the Khe Sanh Combat Base was quite early in our epic travels around Asia. This is an important site in Australia's military history, as well as the US and Vietnam's, so we were pretty keen to get a feel for what happened here. It is a great spot on a journey along the Ho Chi Minh Highway, but also visitable from the coast on a day trip or overnighter to Khe Sanh. We combined our visit here with a Visa Run, check out that video too.

Khe Sanh Combat Base in Vietnam
Looking around the former combat base, which was a U.S. Marine Corps outpost from 1962-72.
The Vietnam War: The Battle of Khe Sanh
It was the longest and deadliest battle of the Vietnam War, with arguments still raging about what actually took place.
A political chess game, American soldiers were caught in enemy territory with little or no strategy and casualties soared. US soldiers were the pawns of sacrifice in a situation beyond their control.
Skeletons of the dead enemy hung from barbed wire. No helicopter could survive for more than 25 seconds before coming under fire. In the US, the nation looked on in horror. No precedent existed for such a ferocious conflict.
Battlefield Vietnam - Siege At Khe Sanh
Features twelve episodes exploring the events of the Vietnam conflict from a military perspective. Twelve Classic One-Hour Episodes From The Acclaimed TV Series Devoted To Vietnam's Key Battles. Judgement of the Vietnam war has been clouded by issues which occurred away from Vietnam: the campus protests, the controversial presidencies of Johnson and Nixon, the agonised arguments over MIAs and POWs and the tormented veterans of that war. For so many people, the Vietnam War brings to mind events in America, not in Vietnam. When thoughts turn to Vietnam, attention focuses on a young girl burned by the napalm, piles of bodies at My Lai and the summary execution of a Viet Cong insurgent on the streets of Saigon. Those events are important, but they do not shed a great deal of light on the military realities of the conflict. Battlefield Series Three: Vietnam was the first definitive documentary of the Vietnam War as a war. It will intentionally avoid the subsidiary issues which cloud judgement of the war, so that a clearer picture of what actually happened on the ground and in the air will emerge.

Khe Sanh Combat Base - Jan 2014
A trip to Dong Ha - Khe Sanh area to fetch some dirt for the USMC 11th Engineer Vets. While there, we were assailed by two Bru guys selling stuff they scavenged around the old bunker areas. Next stop is the Old French Fort to recon the area for Donna Elliott, sister of Jerry Elliott; MIA there since Jan 21, 1968.
Visiting Vietnam's Khe Sanh Combat Base
In May 2017, I was lucky enough to be able to visit Vietnam and tour by motorcycle with Bikes & Drones, who I had gotten to know through this whole YouTube thing.
This first day of touring north took us into the hills along the Ho Chi Minh Road into some mountainous and truly spectacular countryside. Absolute motorcycling heaven! First stop was the famous Khe Sanh Combat Base from the war.

This is the 4th video in a series of motorcycling videos where I spent a week riding around the absolutely stunning mountains and seaside areas of Central Vietnam on a Honda XR125, which was made available to me by Bikes & Drones. I cannot thank him enough for the awesome experience.
Then it was back to Ho Chi Minh City for more adventures before flying home.

Khe Sanh Combat Base Vietnam Today
We went to Khe Sanh around ten in the morning to visit the museum and see the historic combat base. The base was desolate, almost eerie. The fog was rolling in thick. The video shows the Ta Con airstrip used during the war.

This film is a U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) documentary that covers the story of the U.S. Marines and their South Vietnamese allies garrisoned at Khe Sanh, Vietnam in 1968.
Historical Background / Context:
The Vietnam War (aka the Second Indochina War) was a Cold War-era military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. It was fought between North Vietnam - supported by the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China - and the government of South Vietnam - supported by the United States and other anti-communist countries. The communist Viet Cong, a South Vietnamese political organization and army aided by North Vietnam, fought a guerrilla war against the United States and the South Vietnamese forces. The Vietnam People's Army (North Vietnamese Army) engaged in a more conventional war, at times committing large units into battle.
The North Vietnamese government and the Viet Cong were fighting to reunify Vietnam under communist rule. The U.S. government viewed American involvement in the Vietnam conflict as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam with the aim of stopping the spread of communism.
The U.S. Marine Corps served an important role in the Vietnam. Individuals from the USMC operated in the Northern I Corps Regions of South Vietnam. Portions of the Corps were responsible for the less-known Combined Action Program that implemented unconventional techniques for counter-insurgency and worked as military advisers to the Republic of Vietnam Marine Corps. Marines were withdrawn from Vietnam in 1971, and returned briefly in 1975 to evacuate Saigon.
