Khecheopalri is a sacred lake, set about 28 km away from Pelling, Sikkim. Colorful prayer flags flutter near the lake.The best view of the lake though is seen from a vantage point about a half-an-hour climb from the lake.
The Khecheopalri lake originally was known as Kha-Chot-Palri means heaven of Padmasambhava. It is considered sacred for both Hindus and Buddhists. This lake is also identified as the footprints of goddess Tara, as from a high vantage point the contours of the lake appear like a footprint. Another belief is that the footprints are of Hindu God Lord Shiva.
On its way the hillside journey will give an unforgettable experience with spectacular hillside view. One can explore here different types of birds, plants and flowers. If you feel lonely or alone throughout this journey Mt. Kanchenjungha will peep to your frame and says he is with you.

Wish-fullfilling lake in West Sikkim
In West Sikkim, not far from the small town of Pelling and the trekkers hub of Yuksom is a beautiful lake which is sacred for both Hindus and Buddhists.
There are numerous stories that add to the mysticism of this place but the primary source is the shape of the lake which, when viewed from above, resembles a footprint.
Local Buddhists have a story that this comes from the goddess Tara and the lake is her footprint, although there is also a suggestion it is the print of the Buddha himself.
Hindus meanwhile associate this with Shiva's foot.
Whichever footprint it may be, the lake is considered a blessing and a wish-fullfilling place so it is treated in a most holy way.
The jetty to the water is surrounded by prayer wheels and ends with a small shrine. Hundreds of fish gather by the end of the pontoon, waiting to be fed by visitors, creating a living layer of movement as they slither and slide around each other.

It is a holy lake in West Sikkim. People think that if leaves fall from the tree, birds come and pick leaves from the holy lake and keep them out of the lake.

It is located near Khecheopalri village, 147 kilometers west of Gangtok and 34 kilometers to the northwest of Pelling town in the West district of the Northeastern Indian state of Sikkim.The popularly known name of the lake, considering its location is Khecheopalri Lake, ensconced in the midst of the Khecheopalri hill, which is also considered a sacred hill. The lake is an integral part of the much revered valley of Demazong meaning valley of rice. This landscape is also known as a land of hidden treasures blessed by Guru Padmasambhava. The Khecheopalri Lake is also part of Buddhist religious pilgrimage circuit involving the Yuksom, the Dubdi Monastery in Yuksom, Pemayangtse Monastery, the Rabdentse ruins, the Sanga Choeling Monastery, and the Tashiding Monastery. An interesting feature of the lake is that leaves are not allowed to float on the lake, which is ensured by the birds which industriously pick them up as soon as they drop into the lake surface. The Khecheopalri Lake and the Khangchendzonga National Park are conserved from the biodiversity perspective with ecotourism and pilgrimage as essential offshoots. As a result, their recreational and sacredness values are enhanced.

Amazing Khecheopalri Lake, West Sikkim, Pelling.
Very calm and serene place. The lake is about a 10 minute walk from the car parking area.
It is considered holy as per the locals, hence no bathing or fishing is allowed. Supposedly the wishing lake as it is named and the shape of the lake like the left foot of goddess TARA. Even though the lake is in the middle of the forest it is very clean and is kept clean by the fishes and specially the birds who take out even the leaves from the lake.
Mesmerised by the quiet and serene surroundings. A must watch for the prayer flags. A mystical place to just sit and relax away from the maddening crowd. Extremely refreshing and rejuvenating. The bells, the prayer flags, the huge fishes in the lake and the sacred wilderness surrounding the lake makes it very special. And highly recommended for a visit.
Calm lake in the middle of forest. Need to walk for about 10 mins to reach the lake - the walkway is well maintained. There is a monastery around from where you can hear chants which adds to the ambience of the lake.
Got to know from locals that this is a 'wish fulfilling lake' and is considered sacred. You'll see several tiny stones/pebbles pilled upon one another in the form of pyramid all through the walkway.
