Travel Ukraine - Tour of Khotyn Fortress
Take a tour of Khotyn Fortress in Ukraine -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Amidst the enlivening landscape of Ukraine, stands a glorious castle.
Resting on the banks of Dniester River and the gorgeous green fields of Khotyn is the enigmatic Khotyn Fortress.
Built on the site of a previous fort, the structure that stands here today was largely built in the early 14th century.
However many additions and renovations were carried out here in the late 14th and 15th centuries.
From its beginnings as a medieval fort to the present day fortress, its ownership fell into the hands of several different empires and various countries.
Mentioned in the list of Seven Wonders of Ukraine, this gorgeous fortress is a true marvel.
Ukraine: Olesko Castle
The Olesko Castle (Ukrainian: Олеський замок) is currently located within the borders of the present-day Busk Raion in Ukraine. The first historical records of the castle are in a document dated 1390, when Pope Boniface IX gave Halych, a Catholic bishop, this castle as a gift. It is located about seventy-five kilometers from Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine.
The Olesko Castle, oval in shape, stands on top of a small hill, about fifty meters in height. A moat and a wall surrounds it, which serves as a defence for the castle. The castle is also surrounded by a dense swamp. The land that the castle sat on changed ownership many times. It was originally on the border of land of Volhynia and land of Lviv.
The castle was, at different times, owned by Poland, Lithuania, and Hungary. It became a political landmark in the 14th century when movable borders between the three aforementioned countries ran through its territory. Battles for ownership of the castle were constant. A deep well in the basement of the castle was used as an escape route for besieged prisoners.
In the 15th century, the castle was changed from being a defense point, to simply a getaway for aristocracy.
The castle is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski, the hero of the Battle of Vienna. He often lived there, and collected many of the artworks currently displayed in the present-day museum. Another Polish king, King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, was also born here.
The castle was restored in the late 16th to the early 17th Centuries. Paintings and mosaics were brought in to decorate the different rooms of the castle. The castle was remodeled in the Italian Renaissance style, which was popular at that time.
In 1838, an earthquake rocked the castle, partly destroying some areas. In 1882, the castle, regarded as a Polish national monument was bought by the Committee of Preservation of the Olesko Castle, which led to a restoration in 1892. Both World War I and World War II affected the castle negatively, undoing previous restoration work. In 1956, the castle was struck by lightning.
The castle was restored again, beginning in 1961 and lasting until 1985. Today, it is a museum, displaying the collections of antique furnishings and art dating from the 16th-17th Centuries. It also features sculptures, paintings, still lives, applied arts, tapestries, period weapons, and objects used in everyday life at the time. Its collection is regarded as one of the richest treasury of Polish art outside borders of Poland.
The castle is a part of the Golden Horseshoe, a ring of three castles nearby each other: the Olesko, the Pidhirtsi, and the Zolochiv Castles.

Inside one of Ukraine's rare Grazhda fortress houses
(28 Oct 2016) LEAD IN:
In the Carpathian mountains of Ukraine, several old fashioned Grazhda houses remain.
Preserved down the generations, these fortress-like constructions are now attracting a steady stream of tourists.
STORY-LINE:
These unusual wooden structures, many of them secluded high up in the Carpathian mountains, are some of the few remaining authentic Grazhdas in western Ukraine.
The Marusyak family is living in one large Grazhda built in 1925, as attested by a marking on one of the house's beams.
This house was made in 1925 and there is a marking by the builders. They carved this ceiling beam and carved the year of construction of the house there, says Lubov Marusyak.
Several generations of the family have lived in this house, which lies five kilometres from from the nearest village, high in the mountains.
Besides some modern appliances such as the fridge, television set and their mobile phones, in many ways Marusyak and her family are living in very much the same fashion as their ancestors.
Embroidered dresses and carpets dating back almost a century have been preserved by the proprietors.
All decorations, icons, even the oven in the kitchen are all originals.
Marusyak makes bread and cheese at home herself. Several times a year they walk down to the village, mainly to sell their products and to buy oil, spare parts and medicines.
With an influx of tourists coming to taste organic food and look around the houses, there is a drive to keep these old structures preserved and intact.
We wanted to keep this house original. We had people who don't believe that this is the original condition of the house, the wood and even people living here. We are very impressed that this house in such good condition, says Marusyak.
Lubov has a husband and two young children. A small family in these parts could have up to 50 sheep, 10 cows, and dozens of chickens.
In the village of Kryvorivnia is another Grazhda, situated in a private reservation open for tourists.
Vaselyna Zelenchuk, caretaker for the Grazhda knows the story of this house, as it belonged to her grandmother.
According to her, the Carpathian mountains were known for warriors, which is why so many of these small castles were built here with only one entrance, protected from the outside by wooden fences and buildings.
It wasn't so peaceful in the mountains as there are Grazhda's that are like castles. Grazhda means fence in the ancient Slavic language.
She boasts proudly that in 1963, Soviet film director Sergei Parajanov shot scenes from his classic film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors here, attracted by the colour of the houses.

Understanding Soviet Prisoners Through Historical Reenactment
In June 1941, the Soviet NKVD Secret Police executed hundreds of prisoners in the Ukrainian city of Lutsk, as Nazi German forces advanced. Many of those killed included priests, teachers, and regular peasants. 77 years after the prison massacres, a group of 30 young people spent a night in Lutsk Prison, to experience for themselves the terror faced by inmates during those dark times.

WITCH MOUNTAIN KYIV KIEV (Bald Mountain, Castle Mountain, Zamkova Gova, Lysa Gora)
Went up to Bald Mountain in Kyiv - a site known for being the gathering place of witches, pagan rituals and other creepy-crawly stuff for the past couple centuries. Most recently, it has been the place of black masses for Ukraine's satanic sects. Much thanks to my friends for their acting debut in the mini-film that introduces it - I'll be adding a couple more scenes in the other Paranormal Kyiv sites that I'll record and probably do a master-cut at the end. Туристична Україна / Travel to Ukraine

Exploring Lubart's Castle: Ukraine's famous architectural landmark is one of the oldest in Europe
Discover Ukraine through its cultural and architectural heritage. A visit to the Western city of Lutsk will bring you to the famous Lubart's castle.
Lutsk is believed to be 930 years old, the western city was first mentioned in historical manuscripts in 1085. Now it's a modern city with a historical center full of ancient churches, temples, squares, and monuments.
During the Middle Ages the castle withstood a great deal of attacks from Turkish and Tatar forces. Both of them failed and only Cossack chiefman Severyn Nalyvaiko managed to capture the fortress.
Except for the building itself, the Lubart's castle attracts visitors with its new exhibitions. For example the recently restored bell museum, on display is a 370-year-old bell- one of the oldest in the country.
