Ten years of Kielder Observatory | ITV News
The lake and forest in the remote area of Kielder in Northumberland has always been a big draw for visitors. But there was something special that was only seen by walking and cycling enthusiasts who lingered after dark.
The area is the best place in England for star gazing - so ten years ago Kielder Observatory was opened. To celebrate the anniversary, they did everything they could to show off the night sky.

Family Astronomy Events at Kielder Observatory with Tiger Tom and Wild Will
Family Astronomy at Kielder Observatory with Tiger Tom and Wild Will
In February we visited Kielder Observatory for one of their fantastic Family Astronomy events. These 1.5-hour sessions include a mixture of short entertaining talks, telescope tours, demonstrations, and stargazing when it is possible under clear skies. Unfortunately during our visit it was overcast so no chance of stargazing, despite this we had a fantastic time! This was our second visit and we'd love to do it again.

Dusk to Dawn. Kielder Observatory Aurora Display 8th-9th May 2016
@Kielder_Obs
Dusk to Dawn is a short, slightly grandiose film revealing the colours we see in the night sky even as we are entering the Summer months. We begin with a stunning sunset followed by a setting Moon complete with Earth shine before the Aurora appears. The Sun begins to bring light again around 3:30 AM in the morning.

The Kielder Observatory and In House Films teams travelled to Spacefest 6 on a mission to inspire the public. The Spacefest events are generally regarded as the greatest gathering of astronauts, space artists, space authors and space scientists on Earth. This year in Pasadena California, Gary and the team were able to speak to many of the people who either walked on the Moon, or assisted in this, humankind's greatest endeavour. These videos are a way to honour the men and women who made this all possible, and to inspire the future generations of space explorers and scientists. Our observatory is proud to show these films to our visitors and discuss them in detail, in the hope that what you see and gain from a visit to Kielder, combined with the inspirational words of these people, will take you to new heights with your own pathways in life.

What is a Meteorite or Shooting Star - Kielder Observatory

THE SKY AT NIGHT, Sir Patrick Moore Special @ The Kielder Observatory
Event video produced by In-House Films for The Sky At Night & Kielder Observatory.
This event was a very special weekend when the largest facility at The Kielder Observatory was named The Sir Patrick Moore Observatory in honour of the great astronomer and long serving presenter of the BBC’s The Sky at Night, who died in December 2012.
The dedication ceremony took place at the Kielder Observatory just as The Sky at Night team began filming the latest episode at the site.
Amatuer astronomer and comedian Jon Culshaw was given the task of unveiling a plaque at the observatory’s largest turret, home to a 0.5m Newtonian reflecting telescope, one of the biggest public scopes in the country.
Culshaw was joined at the ceremony by fellow presenters Paul Abel, Pete Lawrence, Chris Lintott, Chris North, and Lucie Green, as well as the observatory’s founder, director Gary Fildes.
“What a huge privilege this is,” said Fildes. “When I started work on Kielder Observatory I knew how important astronomy was to the public but not how successful it would become. In our first four years we have had over 40,000 visitors and I bet every one of them was here in one way or another, because of Sir Patrick and The Sky At Night.”
In-House Films were there for the entire weekend to capture this great event.
