Abai, Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort
Abai village is the nearest access to LOWER KINABATANGAN SEGAMA WETLANDS, located 40km or about an hour's boat ride from Sandakan harbour. It borders the Lower Kinabatangan Floodplain, one of the most important wildlife refuges in Malaysia, which over the centuries has evolved 5 distinct habitats: waterlogged and dry forests, saline and freshwater swamps and limestone forests, each contributing towards some of the most diverse concentrations of wildlife in Borneo. The diversity of this area is unimaginable with a record of 1000 plant species, more than 200 bird species, 90 fish species and reptilian and 50 mammal species.
LOWER KINABATANGAN SEGAMA WETLANDS is Sabah's First and Malaysia's largest Ramsar site in the state of Sabah, comprising three Forest Reserves: Trusan Kinabatangan Forest Reserve, Kulamba Wildlife reserve, and Kuala Maruap and Kuala Segama Forest Reserve. The site is recognize as an internationally important wetland for its undisturbed ecosystem where a number of rare, endangered and threatened species lives such as Sumatran Rhinoceros, Proboscis Monkey, Borneo Pygmy Elephant, Oriental Darter and Rhinoceros Hornbill.
The Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort is surrounded by a secondary forest reserve. It is located within nipah and mangrove vegetation and is safe from flood round the year. Access into the resort is by wooden walkways made from local hardwood called Belian. Currently, the resort boasts 4 twin share rooms at its' Longhouse Cabin which caters for traveler's on a budget and requiring basic facilities. In addition to this, KWR has 10 spaciously designed Deluxe chalets for guests wanting more privacy, exclusivity and more facilities. All rooms are equipped with fan, private bathroom with hot & cold shower, shampoo, soap and toilet papers. Swimming pool (coming soon), 40 LED TV with selected Astro Channels (Deluxe chalets only), and Free Wifi internet access within restaurant area, Laundry service is available at a fee. The resort has its' own 24 hours security personnel. 24 hours electricity is supplied by solar panels and a generator. River water is supplied to the resort and undergo water treatment and sand filtered before use. We also practice collecting rainwater for supplement.
Apart from the river cruises, guests can spend more time and are free to enjoy the nature surrounding. Birds, monkeys such as Silvered Langur, Maroon Langur, Hose Langur, and Wild Orang Utan are regularly spotted within the area. Jungle trails via a raised boardwalk are made available for night walks and morning walks.

Itinerary Borneo Eco Ride
Day 1 -- Arrival in Sandakan
Welcome to Borneo! Orientation at one of the nicest rooftop terrace in the city of Sandakan. Get to know one another before we start our adventure the next day!
Day 2 -- Destination Sukau
A river cruise day along the Kinabatangan River to get a closer look at the wild animals in the tropical jungle. Spent a night at one of the cosiest lodge in the serene part of the local Sukau Village.
Day 3 -- Cycle to Kg Batu Puteh.
It is the first day of your cycling activity followed by a river cruise and a night stay at the eco-camp in Tungog Rainforest. Fall asleep to the rhythm of the jungle.
Day 4 -- On the Saddle to Lahad Datu
Wake up to the cheerful sounds of the jungle and hit the pedals! The two wheels will take you to the town of Lahad Datu which is the gateway to the lush tropical rainforest of Danum Valley!
Day 5 -- Hit the pedals to Danum Valley
Let the gravel road lead you to explore the virgin tropical rainforest and take a dip in the cool crisp water of the Taliwas River.
Day 6- Danum Valley - A full day in the rainforest
Take the adventure to another level. Go for self discovery walk or guided trekking tour to Tembaling Waterfall or old burial caves.
Day 7- On the two wheels to an eco resort in Kampung Sabahan.
Let's cycle down to Danum Valley junction. Transfer to Kampung Sabahan where an eco resort lies in alongside a lovely mangrove river
Day 8 -- Cycle to Semporna
Boat transfer to Kunak. Hit the pedals to Semporna. Upon arriving Semporna, say goodbye to your friend of the two wheels and say hello to the beach paradise of Mabul Island!
Day 9 -- Mabul Island -- Sun, sea and sand!!!
Wake up to the sounds of sea hitting the shores. The sight of the aquamarine sea water will lure you to fun beach activities such as swimming, snorkelling, diving or simply sun bathing!
Day 10
End of the Borneo Eco Ride Tour. Departure to Tawau

On our second day in Sukau on the Kinabatangan river we get up early for a sunrise river cruise, taking in the epic scenery and spotting some incredible and rare wildlife only found in Borneo. We then hit a mid morning jungle trek, checking out some hideous leeches and loads of weird and wonderful insects... back to the homestay for a spot of fishing and i'm proud to say I caught a cheeky little catfish... we head off on another afternoon cruise and then a night time jungle walk! Another epic day discovering Borneo and i'd highly recommend staying at Maria's homestay for the 3 day 2 night cruise tour:
