Alexandria 2010.mp4
Alexander the Great's capital of Egypt is what we might call a pretty city only because of its proximity to its homely big sister, Cairo, some two hours to the east. It's a port city strung out for a dozen miles along the Mediterranean's southern shores. It was the one-time home of a World's Wonder lighthouse, now lying somewhere it its shallow harbor (along with a good part of the ancient city, by the way), and also home to an world famous ancient library which suffered a fate similar to that of it's once proud lighthouse, except it was fire, not water and the quaking earth which did it in. Today, that library is replaced by a magnificent new, Post-Modern complex that is once more the pride of Alexandria, and the brightest spot in this city of faded urban glory.
Alexandria also boasts a couple faded old palaces, from the 1950s faded glory of King Farouk, the last of a three-thousand-year-old line of monarchs, brought down in the mid-twentieth century revolution, which established Egypt's modern day faux democracy. One of Farouk's old summer palaces is today an opulent five-star hotel where you pay to get in to use the modern, sanitary restrooms. The other palace is almost derilict...a would-be museum, if and when the government ever gets around to it. Otherwise, Alexandria is a city with more mosques than traffic lights and the vehicular congestion to prove it. It is also the Egyptian version of a resort city with miles of sandy beaches only miles from miles of sandy desert. What a difference a little...okay, a LOT, of salt water makes. As a salt water cruising tourist (RCI's Navigator of the Seas), Alexandria is the port city you go to to get to Cairo and the pyramids only to realize you might have been better off being satisfied with faded glory.
Despite this, Alexandria does have a certain luster, shining in the springtime Mediterranean sun, especially near the coast. In this video, you see that, along with the library, the ugly citadel, which replaced the once grand lighthouse, the souvenir vendors, the beaches, the palaces, the parks, the congestion...and the faded glory of a city now long past its ancient prime.
