Kyoto's Golden Kinkakuji vs Silver Ginkakuji ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Kyoto is Japan’s cultural capitol and home to over 2000 temples & shrines to visit, but it’s hard to know which ones to see when you only have a few days. This time, Kansai resident Kevin Riley and I debate two of the most visited zen Buddhist temples: Kinkakuji vs Ginkakuji
▶︎ KINKAKU-JI (1397)
Kinkakuji is called the “Golden Pavilion” or Golden Temple and is the more popular of the two because of its iconic gold leaf exterior. It was built in 1397.
★ PROS: It’s one of the famous scenes in Japan
★ CONS: It’s too crowded except for the first 15 minutes of the day. The surrounding gardens are kind of boring compared to other temples & shrines and there isn’t much to do in the area. Few shops and restaurants. There is no subway or train nearby. It can take up to an hour to arrive by bus from JR Kyoto Station when there is traffic.

▶︎ GINKAKU-JI (1490)
Ginkakuji is called the “Silver Pavilion” or Silver Temple and is located on the East side of Kyoto and the start to the famous “Philosopher's Path” which eventually gets you to Kiyomizudera. Ginkakuji was supposed to be covered in silver foil but the Shogun who was building it died before it’s completion and the decision not to complete it give it a wabi-sabi aesthetic to it. It has a sand garden and a hilltop view.
★ PROS: Less crowded than Kinkakuji and the building is surrounded with tree giving it a more zen-like feel / connection to nature. It’s on the East side of the city meaning there is more to do, a shopping street and loads of restaurants outside. The grounds are well groomed, not paved. Lovely moss. Sand garden and small bamboo outcrop near the restrooms.
★ CONS: It’s slightly more expensive than Kinkakuji. The walk from the bus station take 10-12 minutes to arrive on foot.

How to get to Kinkakuji:
Take the bus in front of JR Kyoto Station. Take bus 101 or 205 (220 yen / $2 / 40-50 minutes)
* There is usually a long queue to ride this bus after 10am.
Take the JR Sanin Main Line to Emmachi Station (2 stops) then grab a taxi (900-1000 yen / $9-$10 / 7 minutes) Total time: 25-30 minutes. You can also take the Metro Karasuma Line from JR Kyoto station to Kitaoji then grab a taxi.

A Tour of Kinkaku-ji Temple (The Golden Pavilion)
Kinkaku-ji, the famed “Golden Pavilion,” is Kyoto’s most iconic sight. The temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1397). When Yoshimitsu died, the building was converted into a Zen temple by his son. The temple is set in a magnificent strolling garden overlooking a pond. The location implements the idea of borrowed scenery, which creates an extension of the views surrounding the pavilion. The pavilion successfully incorporates three distinct styles of architecture: The first floor is built in the Shinden style used for palace buildings during the Heian Period (794–1185). The second floor is built in the Bukke style used in samurai residences and has its exterior covered in gold leaf. The third floor, also covered in gold leaf, is built in the Chinese style and topped with a bronze phoenix ornament.

When it comes to winter in Kyoto, nothing is better than Kinkakuji covered with snow!
This scenery is so beautiful that it has become famous all over the world.
Kinkakuji temple is one of Kyoto's most famous attractions, this temple was originally built in 1397 as a residence for shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga. The structure was completely covered in gold leaf, earning it the name Golden Pavilion.
The image of the temple richly adorned in gold leaf reflects beautifully in the water of Kyokochi, the mirror pond.
It is perhaps the most widely-recognized image of Kyoto. Seen reflected in the adjoining mirror pond with its small islands of rock and pine, Kinkaku-ji Temple, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, is a breathtaking must-see.
The temple's garden is also a scenic delight and contains in its grounds a charming teahouse.

Le premier objet du bâtiment était de servir de résidence pour la retraite du Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1358-1409). Le bâtiment recouvert de feuilles d'or sera reconverti en temple zen peu de temps après sa mort. Un moine de 21 ans fit brûler le Kinkaku-ji en 1950, événement qui fut transformé en fiction par le célèbre auteur Yukio Mishima. Le temple fut reconstruit en 1955 et continue de fonctionner comme entrepôt pour des reliques sacrées.
Le jardin du temple est également enchanteur et abrite dans son enceinte une charmante maison de thé.

昨日より降り出した雪が朝になると京都の街を白く染めておりました。記録的な大雪です。
雪の京都といえば金閣寺ということで交通と足元がかなり悪い中撮影に行きました。
薄っすら雪化粧とか、バスがチェーンを装着する積雪は数年に1回位はありますが、これくらいの積雪は数十年に一度しか有りません。
といいつつ2015年に58年ぶりの記録的大雪が降って2年ぶりなんですが 笑
今後数十年降らない可能性もあるので開門時間を目指して撮りに行きました。
開門時刻に行くと写真ファンをはじめ既に多くの方々が列を作ってお待ちでした。
然而在京都一下雪，金閣寺一定馬上成為頭條，只有居住在京都，才能夠看到這樣的美景。
说起京都最有名的寺院，毫无疑问当推金阁寺。金碧辉煌的楼阁，吸引着来自世界各地到访游客的目光。金阁的金色，是用真的金箔所贴，其总重量据说达到20公斤。前来京都，金阁寺是一定要到访的旅游景点之一。
院内有护身符商品的销售点，还可以购买到Hello Kitty和Little Twin Stars的护身符等。与金阁同样是金色的护身符，应该会为您带来好运。

Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺, literally Temple of the Golden Pavilion), officially named Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺, literally Deer Garden Temple), is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the most popular buildings in Japan, attracting a large number of visitors annually. It is designated as a National Special Historic Site and a National Special Landscape, and it is one of 17 locations making up the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which are World Heritage Sites.
The Golden Pavilion (金閣 Kinkaku) is a three-story building on the grounds of the Rokuon-ji temple complex. The top two stories of the pavilion are covered with pure gold leaf. The pavilion functions as a shariden (舎利殿), housing relics of the Buddha (Buddha's Ashes). The building was an important model for Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion Temple), and Shōkoku-ji, which are also located in Kyoto.When these buildings were constructed, Ashikaga Yoshimasa employed the styles used at Kinkaku-ji and even borrowed the names of its second and third floors.

Kinkaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple and is one of the most visited and photographed tourist destinations in Japan. It’s name is derived from the fact that the upper two levels are literally covered in gold leaf.
Kinkaku-ji is three stories high. Although the structure as a whole is said to represent the Muromachi-period of architecture, each level was built to reflect a distinct style from the imperial and warrior aristocracies.
The temple was originally built by a statesman named Ashikago Yoshimitsu who used it as his personal villa as well as an official guesthouse for the Emperor and other members of nobility. After Yoshimitsu’s death, it was converted into a Buddhist temple where it stood for several centuries.
Just as recently as 1950, the original temple was burned down by a young buddhist monk, who was later found to suffer from schizophrenia. The temple, as we see it today, was rebuilt a few years later and became a World Cultural heritage Site in 1994.
As you follow the path through the Pavillon gardens, there are a few notable points of interest along the way, such as the Galaxy or Ginga spring, which was used for tea water. There’s also the dragon-gate waterfall, and the An-min-taku Pond. A little further down the path is the Sekka-tei Tea House - which means place of beauty. This tea house was built during the Edo period. It is said that one of the best views of Kinkaku-ji can be seen from here during the summer.
Near the exit, there is a place to pray, a few shops to buy tourist trinkets and, omamori, which are charms for safety, happiness or good luck.
How to get there:
Kinkaku-ji is located on the northeastern side of Kyoto. Unfortunately, the site isn’t accessible from any subway or train lines. The only way to get there is by bus or car. If you’re coming from Kyoto station, there are a couple of different ways. The most direct route would be on the number 205 bus. This will take about 35 to 40 minutes. You can take the 205 directly from the bus depot on the north side of the station.
If you’re coming from north or east Kyoto, you could take the subway to Kitaoji Station. From here, you can take the 101, 102, 204 or the 205 Bus.

The Golden Pavilion - Kinkakuji Temple in Kyoto, Japan! This temple was one of the most amazing things that I saw during my trip to Japan. The top two floors of the temple are covered in gold leaf. It wasn't hard to see why there were so many people there from around the world to get a glimpse at this awe-inspiring temple. If you're in Kyoto or planning a trip to Japan, it's definitely worth visiting!

Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavillion in the snow looks absolutely stunning.
It snowed heavily in Kyoto on a January weekend. So I did what anyone in my situation would do, I went to Kinkakuji! One of the postcard icons of Japan in the snow is a rare and beautiful sight.

Tour of Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion of Kyoto Japan + AMAZING Curry Udon Soup!
We went on a tour of the Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺 Golden Pavilion), also known as Kinkakuji. Kinkaku-ji is a Zen Temple in the northern part of Kyoto with its top 2 floors completely adorned in gold leaf. This is one of the most unique sights we have ever seen and definitely one of the top things to do in Kyoto, Japan!
The temple is formally known as Rokuonji and was originally the retirement home of then Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. It became a Zen Buddhist temple after his passing.
Kinka-ji is quite simply a stunning and striking work of Japanese art. It stands out like few structures can, and that is because we don't often see temples made out of gold, if ever. The gold used is not actual solid gold leaf, and if you get close enough you can see the gold leaf pattern on the outside walls of the Golden Temple of Kinkaku-ji.
Overlooking Kinkakuji is a large pond full of fish. The girls loved the fish so much for whatever reason these little pond creatures just put them in a good mood.
We capped off the day by tasting our first bowl of Curry Udon(カレーうどん), something that we just don't see much of at home (at least yet) - and it was delicious! Mildly spicy curry broth, with freshly made udon noodles and giant tempura shrimps to soak in all those curry juices and serve as dumplings? It was truly amazing, and cheap. I believe these bowls were 8$ US per portion.

Took the wrong direction bus to see the Golden Temple...lol. We ended up sightseeing Kyoto from the public bus. It's a great way to see the city and its resident.

Kinkakuji is one of Kyoto's icons of the city and Top 3 sights. This World Heritage sight ranks high on many bucket lists. Come see why.
Kinkakuji (also called Rokuonji) has a history going back over 600 years and is a Rinzai Zen temple. It was created first as a retirement villa for the Ashikaga Shogun, and after his death became a temple.
Nearly every tourist and school group stampedes to Kinkaku-ji as soon as they get off the train - so to enjoy it better, try to get there as soon as it opens in the morning at 9 AM. Shown here is what happens when you don't - and need to swim through crowds of people taking group pictures and jostling for that perfect shot.
Seeing Kinkakuji does not take long, in contrast to many other of Kyoto's temples and shrines - unfortunately, you cannot go inside the Golden Pavilion, and you can leisurely be through it all in about 30 minutes. Kinkaku-ji is not near any train or subway station - from Kyoto Station you can take Bus #101 or #205 for 40 minutes (¥230) or from Kitaoji subway stn get Bus #101, 102, 204 or 205 for ten minutes.
Another temple, Ginkakuji, was supposed to be a companion temple to Kinkaku-ji but its silver leaf was never made. You can see it here:

EXPLORING ARASHIYAMA BAMBOO GROVE & KINKAKUJI TEMPLE | JAPAN TRAVEL VLOG
We are finally in KYOTO! Visiting this city is one of the highlights of my trip. You will know why in the next vlogs but for now, I will share with you guys our experience in Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavillion).
Kyoto used to be the capital of Japan so it is rich in the Japanese culture. In this city, you can find numerous temples and historical sites so it is a must to visit Kyoto. We spent 4 days 3 nights (including travel) in this city and it was still not enough. We will definitely go back next time!
