Staying at Guirdil Bothy: The Isle of Rum
Welcome to The Isle of Rum. Here we go for a walk to Guirdil Bothy where we stay a couple of nights. Oh yay how fun for us?
We stayed here on the 5th of May 2019. We manage to go on these kind of adventures (holidays) frequently as they are cheap and usually brief. I try to capture the beauty of these places with photography and video but sometimes feel I don't do it justice because usually these places in the middle of an empty wilderness with nobody around for miles generate awe and emotion which I think I fail to portray on youtube but I do try.
I make these videos largely so I can remember that feeling that is sooo easily forgotten when you are back in 'civilisation'. I try to hold onto that feeling for as long as possible because when you're doing mundane things like going to work everyday, paying taxes, comparing insurance companies, broadband companies and so on I have to remind myself that 'this aint life'.

Woman drops career to become professional huntress in Scotland
Charlie Blance 20, now living on the Isle of Rum - a national nature reserve 20 miles off the West Coast of Scotland, said she 'stuck out like a sore thumb' in urban environments and craved a life in the wilderness. She landed a role as a trainee nature reserve worker on the Isle of Rum. She is required to take part in annual red deer culls (right and inset)) killing up to 20, as part of her job.

BBC Outside Broadcast Autumnwatch Isle of Rum
The BBC Autumnwatch technological set up for the live broadcasts during Autumnwatch 2006 from the Isle of Rum Red Deer Rut. Filmed early in the morning when the crew where still five miles away having breakfast.
Where else in Britain could the BBC have left so much expensive equipment in an unlocked unguarded wooden shed without fear of it all getting nicked - except for another remote island may be.

The Last Seabird Summer S01E02 Trouble At Sea
Adam Nicolson catches up with the seabirds of the Shiants in July, and the colonies seem to be thriving. The puffings guillemots and razorbills are bringing in .
Documentary following Adam Nicolson and the seabirds of the Shiants, a cluster of Scottish islands in the Outer Hebrides.
Overthinking - Richard Duckworth (Island of Rùm, Rum, Scotland)
Filmed, edited and ridden by Richard Duckworth.
When you're alone on an island, you're miles away from the nearest person, who has no idea where you might be, you have no phone signal and there isn't even a doctor on the island, it add's a whole new level to riding even the most basic trails and features...
Off the North West coast of Scotland the island of Rum has a population of 30 and is 40 square miles of mountainous terrain.
With just a couple of gravel tracks and footpaths to choose from the riding is hard going but the rare breed Rum ponies and highland cattle make up for it!

360° panorama on the Isle of Rum
The Isle of Rum is possibly the most beautiful island in Scotland. There are few places I know of in Scotland where it is possible to see large parts of the Inner Hebrides, the Outer Hebrides and the western mainland. This panorama is at the start of the Barkeval ridge at about 570 metres' altitude. 10th August 2012.

Below Freezing -5° Snow Wild Camp at High Cup Nick
We spent the night wild camping on the 1st of February 2019 at High Cup Nick in the pennines. A very cold night and lots of snow made this a challenging yet enjoyable experience. Join us by watching above and come on in experience the fun we had. I'm sure you're already doing that anyway if you're at this stage because it's almost impossible to read the description on the video before watching the video. In fact I don't think many people read the descriptions so I'm probably wasting my own time typing all this out.......

Old Photographs Kinloch Rannoch Highland Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Kinloch Rannoch, Scottish Gaelic, Ceann Loch Raineach, a village in the Perthshire Highlands. It is located at the eastern end of Loch Rannoch, 18 miles West of Pitlochry, on the banks of the River Tummel. Formerly a tiny hamlet, Kinloch Rannoch was enlarged and settled, under the direction of James Small, formerly an Ensign in Lord Loudoun's Regiment, mainly by soldiers discharged from the army, but also by displaced crofters. Small had been appointed by the Commissioners for the Forfeited Estates to run the Rannoch estates, which had been seized from the clan chieftains who had supported the Jacobites following the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Local roads and bridges were improved, enabling soldiers at Rannoch Barracks to move more freely around the district. Small was supported by Dugald Buchanan and his wife who taught the villagers new trades and crafts. Buchanan was a local schoolmaster and Gaelic poet, who is commemorated by a large monument in the centre of the square in Kinloch Rannoch. He worked with James Stuart minister of Killin on translating Bible passages into Scottish Gaelic. Near the village is a hill reputed to resemble the head, shoulders, and torso of a man. It has been given the name of The Sleeping Giant . Local myth says that the giant will wake up only when he hears the sounds of his master's flute. The main economic activities in the area are agriculture, forestry, hydro power and tourism with local tourist activities including fishing, rafting, cycling and hiking. The village and some of its inhabitants were featured in the film Shepherd on the Rock.
