Saitama Kawagoe Kitain Temple -喜多院 - 4K Ultra HD : Head temple of the Tendai Sect in the Kanto region, Kitain Temple was originally part of a three-temple complex built in 830 and slowly became the Tendai Sect’s main temple around the 17th Century. This took place under the influence of Tenkai, a Japanese Buddhist monk, also known as Nankōbō Tenkai (南光坊 天海), who developed a deep and trusted relationship with the first 3 shoguns of the Edo period.
Heavily damaged by fire in 1638, Kitain Temple has been saved by the Shogun Iemitsu, who ordered the removal of several palace buildings from the Edo Castle (Tokyo) to Kawagoe. This move ended up saving them, without knowing it, from the great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the destruction during WWII. This makes Kitain today one of the only places in Japan where you can visit surviving buildings from Edo Castle.
Finally, and located just in front of Kitain’s main hall, you will find a very unusual garden made of 540 stones statues : Gohyaku Rakan. Each stone represents a disciple of Buddha and comes with its own unique facial expression.

Kawagoe's Kitain is the head temple of the Tendai Sect in the Kanto Region. Among its halls are the only remaining palace buildings of the former Edo Castle. Originally part of a three-temple complex built in 830, Kitain flourished and became the main temple at the turn of the 17th century under the leadership of Tenkai, an extraordinary personality who developed trusted friendships with the first three shogun of the Edo Period.

Kita-in （喜多院） Temple, Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, Japan
Kita-in （喜多院) temple is located in Kawagoe district in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. This temple is the main temple for people of Kawagoe.
Part of the Edo Castle has been moved into this temple precincts, including the birthplace (room) of Third Shogun of Japan Iemitsu. There are many artificats that belonged to the Shogun's household like the paintings, in a museum in the temple precincts.
One of the most awe inspiring things in the temple precincts is the 500 statues of Rakan (Buddhas). Every statue is different in this set of Buddhas and you should definitely visit this temple to see it.

We visit Kawagoe in 2019. This is already outside of Tokyo but very accessible via train. Lots of shops for tourists and locals alike. It's a tourist trap! :-)

At Kitain temple in Kawagoe
KOEDO Kawagoe/ Traditional Japan/ Samurai
If you're a fan of samurai or the movie 47 Ronin, you should check out Kawagoe, a town in Saitama Prefecture which is just 30 minutes away from central Tokyo (former Edo)! The town is more known as KOEDO which means Little Tokyo.
This place will give you the chance to experience the traditional Japan -- a long long time ago when samurai rules. Aside from being a historical town, it has a bunch of relaxing attractions/sightseeing spots which I have listed below.

The Kitain Shrine at Kawagoe
Kitain has a history of 1200 years starting with a Monk called Ennin who founded the Muryoju Temple(main deity Amitabh Budha) This Temple of Tendai sect was divided into North, south and middle temples and was rebuilt in 1296 after a war in 1205 when it was burned down.
