Kittur Rani Channamma, Belgaum District
Kittur (Kannada: ಕಿತ್ತೂರು) is a village in Belgaum District
of Karnataka state. It is a place of historical importance because of the resistance of Rani Chennamma of Kittur (1778--1829) against the British East India Company, during which a British Commissioner, John Thackery was killed. On the outskirts of the town lies the ruins of the palace within a fort. The palace was the residence of the Rani Chennamma. In connection with a disputed succession to this chiefship in 1824, St John Thackeray, Commissioner of Dharwad, was killed in a battle when approaching the Kittur fort. Later another unit stormed Kittur and captured Queen Chennamma, who was imprisoned in Bailhongal Jail where she died. Rani Chennamma became a legend. Kittur Rani Chennamma was the Queen of Kittur, India. She was best known for leading an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1824. The resistance ended with her arrest and she became a symbol of the independence movement in India. Chennamma was born in Desai family of Kakati, a small village in the kingdom of Kittur, which is around 5 km north of Belgaum in Karnataka. Born five decades earlier than Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, who also fought the British, she received training in horse riding, sword fighting and archery in her youth. She became queen of her native kingdom and married Raja Mallasarja, of the Desai family, and had one son. After their son's death in 1824 she adopted Shivalingappa, and made him heir to the throne. The British East India Company did not accept this and ordered Shivalingappa's expulsion, using a policy of paramountcy and complete authority (doctrine of lapse officially codified between 1848 and 1856 by Lord Dalhousie), but Chennamma defied the order. Rani Chennamma sent a letter to the governor at Bombay to plead the cause of Kittur, but Elphinstone turned her down, and war broke out. The British tried to confiscate the treasure and jewels of Kittur, valued around fifteen Lakhs of rupees. They attacked with a force of 200 men and four guns, mainly from the third troop of Madras Native Horse Artillery. In the first round of war, during October 1824, British forces lost heavily and St John Thackeray, collector and political agent, was killed by Kittur forces. Amatur Balappa, a lieutenant of Chennamma, was mainly responsible for his killing and losses to British forces. Two British officers, Sir Walter Elliot and Mr. Stevenson were also taken as hostages. Rani Chennamma released them with an understanding with Chaplin that the war would be terminated but Chaplin continued the war with more forces. During the second assault, Subcollector of Sholapur, Mr. Munro, nephew of Thomas Munro was killed. Rani Chennamma fought fiercely with the aid of her lieutenant, Sangolli Rayanna, but was ultimately captured and imprisoned at Bailhongal Fort, where she died on 21 February 1829. Rani Chennamma's samadhi or burial place is in Bailhongal taluk, but is in neglected state with poor maintenance and the place is surrounded by a small park maintained by Government agencies.Kittur presently lies in ruins with the Nathapanthi matha site off limits, and the areas Maruti, Kalmeshwara, Dyamavva, Basavanna and the Chalukyan monument, being completely renovated. The archaeological museum at the location is managed by the state department of archaeology and museums. It has a rich collection of antiquities found in and around Kittur, which include a few of the weapons, swords, mail-coat, shield, engraved wooden doors and windows of the Kittur palace, inscriptions, herostones, Surya, Vishnu both from Kadrolli, Vishnu and Surya from Devarashigehalli, Subrahmanya from Manoli, Durga from hirebagewadi and many more antiquities, as well as some modern paintings.

Kitturu Chanamma- India's First Freedom Fighter
She was the first independence activist of India. She stood all alone with a vibrant fiery eye against the British empire. She did not succeed in driving them away, but she did provoke many women to raise against the British rule. She was Chennamma Queen of the princely state Kittur in Karnataka. Today she is well known as Kittur Rani Chennamma. Lets take a few steps back in history to know more about her.
Chennamma was born in Kakati (a small village in north of Belgaum in Karnataka), in 1778 that is almost 56 years earlier than Rani Laxmi Bai. From a very young age she received training in horse riding, sword fighting and archery. She was well know for her brave acts across her town.
Chennamma was married to Raja Mallasarja of Kittur a princely state of Belgaum in Karnataka. Her married life seemed to be a sad tale after her husband died in 1816. With this marriage she had only one son, but fate seemed to play a tragic game in her life. Her son breathed his last in 1824, leaving the lonely soul to fight against the British rule.
Chennamma later adopted Shivalingappa as her son and made him heir to the throne. The British did not accept this and ordered the expulsion of Shivalingappa with the help of their policy Doctrine of lapse. Chennamma did not like the involvement of the Whites in her rule and decision, so she defied the order, which resulted a great battle.
Chennamma led an armed rebellion against the British in response to the Doctrine of lapse. She did not step back looking at the mighty army of British, but fought with great vigor, expertized skill and courage. However she could not hold out for long. She was confined behind the bars in Bailhongal Fort, where she died on February 21,1829.
Kitturu Rani Chennamma could not win the war against British, but she etched her presence for many centuries in the world of history. Along with Onake Obavva, Abbakka Rani and Keladi Chennamma, she is much revered in Karnataka as an icon of bravery.
Veerashaiva Lingayats Led India's Freedom fight againest Britishers.
