Tucked away in an UNESCO World Heritage Site in the mountains above Betty’s Bay, Oudebosch Camp nestles unobtrusively within a protected wilderness area in the Kogelberg Biosphere. The buildings are modestly scaled, lightweight, with planted roofs. The palette of natural, local, renewable, low embodied energy, non toxic materials and components develops the low impact sustainable qualities of the project. Low tech simple passive design principles underpin crafting of the building envelope which is shaped for the shifting seasons.

The Good Holiday recently visited Cape Nature's Oudebosch Biosphere.
This recent development in the epicenter of South Africa's flower kingdom was done on an already existing footprint. It is the kind of architecture that is fundamental in getting people to fall in love with our landscapes and treasure the nature reserves.
Sometimes we associate sustainability and green development with a slap-dash hippie approuch and discomfort, but this just showed me that you can dramatically reduce your impact on the world and still have a beautiful and comforting experience.

Considered by many to be the most beautiful of CapeNature’s protected areas, Kogelberg Nature Reserve earns that reputation largely to the fact that it occupies an area with minimal human interference. The reserve presents perhaps the finest example of mountain fynbos in the Western Cape and is a world-renowned World Heritage Site.

A Wonderful weekend hike in the Cape Nature Kogelberg reserve. Even with the pressing drought in the Western Cape, the Palmiet river was running strong.
Kleinmond to Hermanus from the air
Kleinmond, Onrus, Hermanus and all the other coastal towns in the South African Southern Cape coast are some of the most beautiful places on earth. I just had to come here having not visited this area for decades. As a young boy my parents frequented these places and now I realised why they loved it so much.
By this time everyone watching my videos should have realised that I am a sea lover. For me there is just nothing like a nice stretch of beach, rocks and blue sea water!

This is a video of a striped mouse visiting Protea obtusifolia flowerheads at De Hoop Nature Reserve, South Africa.
The mouse is on one flowerhead for about 5 minutes, then it moves to the second flowerhead. I cut out a few minutes of his feeding on the first head, so at about 1 minute and 35 seconds in, you see the same mouse on the other head.
Starting at that point, you can watch a male cape sugarbird attack the striped mouse.

Kogelberg 22 km Hike
This is a video of all the landscapes, fauna and flora we encountered on one of the Kogelberg Nature Reserve's longer trails. The reserve is lacated in the Cape fynbos biome. We hiked in December 2014 thus encountering lots of the iconic Cape Everlasting.
