Japan: High-tech Tokyo temple offers futuristic resting place for departed
The futuristic Ruriden columbarium in Tokyo's Shinjuku houses 2,046 illuminated glass Buddha altars corresponding to drawers storing ashes of the deceased, with progressive head monk Yajima Taijun explaining the high-tech temple, Wednesday.
An IC card allows the owner of the altar containing the ashes to access the building and light up the corresponding statue. Ashes are stored for 33 years before being buried below the Ruriden. Currently 600 alters are in use and another 300 are reserved. Yajima Taijun stated that he had placed a lot of little buddhas at the site so single people would not feel lonely.
SOT, Yajima Taijun, head monk (Japanese): I created this Ossuary for singles, unmarried people and for those who have no children.
SOT, Yajima Taijun, head monk (Japanese): I placed a lot of little buddhas here so single people and couples with no kids will not feel lonely.
SOT, Yajima Taijun, head monk (Japanese): I made the buddha glass wall so that light can change the colors or the area to show the world of Buddha.

1. Left pan of the inside of the LED-lit Ruriden mausoleum
2. Mid shot - right pan of LED-lit glass Buddhas
3. Wide of lady paying her respects to her loved ones - a Buddha on the upper level is lit in white light, highlighting where her loved one is
4. Right pan from lady praying to location where one of the Buddhas is lit white
5. Right pan from regular cemetery to the main building of the Kokokuji Temple
6. Setup shot - Kokokuji Head Priest Yajima Taijun sweeping the steps of the main Kokokuji Temple structure
7. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) - Yajima Taijun - Head Priest - Kokokuji Temple
I wanted to make something different for people who are alone or people with small family units, who even if they opt for a conventional type of grave, will have no-one to come and look after it. The concept was to develop something that could be a suitable option for them.
8. Tilt up of a lit Buddha
9. Mid shot - right pan of LED lit Buddhas
10. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) - Yajima Taijun - Head Priest - Kokokuji Temple
Even though the Buddhas are quite small and displayed closely together, one can easily understand that they represent people's remains and that's why the design turned out like this.
11. Wide of inside of mauseoleum
12. Low angle shot of lit wall
13. Mid shot of a Buddha lit white amongst many blue lit Buddhas
14. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) - Yajima Taijun - Head Priest - Kokokuji Temple
At first you couldn't tell where your slot was. To make it easy for people to understand which Buddha was theirs, we decided to light it up and it looked good. Then we thought about lighting them all up and it looked even nicer, but once again we couldn't tell which Buddha belonged to whom. So we decided to use colours. The final result wasn't the original design. Little by little through trial and error we achieved what you see today.
15. Wide of a wall or LED-lit Buddhas
16. Main Buddha inside the mausoleum
17. Right pan from wall of Buddhas to Head Priest Taijun praying
18. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) - Yajima Taijun - Head Priest - Kokokuji Temple
I think the feeling of praying at an old cemetery or here at Riruden is the same. For me we still pray from the same book and there is no difference between the two styles.
19. Man walking inside the mausoleum
20. Man typing the name of his loved one so the correct Buddha can be lit up
21. Man confirming the name of his relative so the correct Buddha may be lit up - A visitor can either use a swipe card or type in the name in a tablet
22. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) - Kenji Yamanaka
When my auntie and uncle were alive, they decided themselves that they wanted to be cremated and put here. Furthermore they didn't have any children so, with no close relatives, if they had chosen a regular grave, nobody would have looked after it. It seems that's why they decided to choose this place, Ruriden.
23. Man praying for his relatives
24. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) - Kenji Yamanaka
The last time I visited here with my wife and yes we thought it was beautiful but more importantly we felt it wasn't a lonely place. My wife even went as far as saying that she might want to come here herself one day. I think together with everyone else, this wouldn't be a lonely final resting place.
25. Mother and daughter at the entrance, inserting the name of their husband and father whom they've come to pay their respects to
26. Pan from wall to mother and daughter praying
27. Closeup of mother and daughter praying
28. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) - Kimie Suwahara
32. Mother and daughter leaving

Bamboo Forest in Kamakura - SO BEAUTIFUL!! Tokyo Day Trip
The most calm and beautiful bamboo forest - such a tranquil atmosphere and possibly the highlight of the Tokyo trip!
We travelled from Enoshima to Kamakura on the Enoden Electric Railway. There are so many Japanese shrines and temples in Kamakura, and it's an easy day trip from Tokyo, just an hour by train on the Odakyu line.
We walked from Kamakura Station to Hokokuji Temple, also known as the bamboo temple, stopping off at a large temple on the way, which was really beautiful with the greenery, the red bridge and flags - I just love the colours!
Hokokuji Temple has a Japanese garden and bamboo forest - it's more of a garden than a forest really, but it was amazing to see the tall bamboo and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. I really loved it there!
The maps app I mention is Ulmon City Maps 2 Go - they're not sponsoring the video or anything, it was just really useful and I'd totally recommend it for offline maps if you're going to Tokyo (and it's free to download).
SUBSCRIBE for more Tokyo videos - next we'll be going to Odaiba - and enjoying the seaside park on a sunny day this time!

My Japan Odyssey 2017 - Day 7 - 08/31/2017
PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE:
NOTE: 英語の下の日本語漢字翻訳。
The dictionary definition of an Odyssey is:
1. A long wandering, or voyage, usually marked by many changes of fortune;
2. an intellectual or spiritual wandering or quest, characterized by self-discovery, and spiritual enlightenment.
This is precisely why I have named my four week journey in Japan My Japan Odyssey 2017. It was much more than a simple vacation or tourist trip for me; Rather, it provided me with an opportunity to wander away from tourist areas, and voyage into a land and people that I really knew little to nothing about.
To me, Japan possesses everything that I desired for my spiritual Odyssey in 2017: A vastly different culture, language, food, geography, religion, and people than here in America - which gave me time to reflect on my own personal life-path, and to discover new things about myself intellectually and spiritually. An Odyssey!
2016 for me was a turning point in my life for many reasons. I was forced to give up many life-long goals, hopes, dreams and ambitions and chart a new course in my life personally. I found that new course in Japan in 2017. In Japan, I found Spiritual Enlightenment in the simple Shinto and Buddhist belief systems of Japan and their temples and shrines. I found happiness and lifetime memories in the smiles of those Japanese I met along my Odyssey, and I found peace in my own life through all of the alone time I had on the Odyssey.
Surrounded by millions of Japanese people, all speaking in a language I could only understand bits and pieces of, without any support system other than Google Maps (thank God for Google Maps!), I found myself spiritually and mentally. And carrying a 53 lb pack for 4 weeks, and climbing to the summit of Mt. Fuji at night, in driving snow and 70 mph winds, I found myself physically, as well.
Yes, it is true that I only saw 15 other Americans in the four weeks (!!!) while I was there, so I also often felt like an island completely surrounded by an ocean of Japan. It was the strangest feeling I have ever encountered in my many trips I've taken around the world.
What an Odyssey!
One of my Japanese friends in Tochigi Prefecture once told me that he feels I was Japanese in a previous life, part of the reincarnation belief structure of Buddhism. I don't know about this, but the combination of this Odyssey becoming a spiritual and intellectual wandering time of self-discovery has absolutely awakened something in my soul - and has permanently connected me to the great country of Japan - and its people.
About these videos: I was asked by a YouTube fan to do something called vlog. I don't even know what that is, but I think this video is pretty close to what I think a vlog is. I wanted to simply give my distant family and friends an efficient and fun way to see my photos and videos. Google Photos FAILED in this regard.
This is video 7. I provide an itinerary of each day's big brush activities in the beginning of the video. I will be releasing a video of each day of my Odyssey once I finish each one - it will take me many months to do so, as I have a real job LOL. Please enjoy them if you wish to!
