Jewish Długosiodło, Poland June 1934.
Uploaded July 03, 2017 by Meir Halevi Garbarz Gover
Photographed by Benjamin Rosenberg 1934 (c).
By permission from Tina (Jaskolka) Jaskoll.
This clip portrays the summer of 1934 in Jewish Dlugosiodlo and was taken by a member of the Rosenberg/ Jaskolka family who returned on a 1934 trip from New York City to Dlugosiodlo in a fruitless attempt to convince Jews in Dlugosiodlo to immigrate to America.
Apparently most Jews in Dlugosiodlo preferred to stay there. The secular nature of America (as well as in the then British controlled Palestine) deterred them. Some went to America, Argentina, British Palestine and Central America, stayed there and survived the Holocaust. Some returned back to Dlugosiodlo as those new countries seemed not observant enough for them. Come June 1941 (Operation Barbarossa), they paid for such grave mistake with their own lives and the lives of their families.
Various Jewish children and Jewish adults in Dlugosiodlo are portrayed in the clip. Most are identified, some not yet.
Benjamin Rosenberg who was visiting Dlugosiodlo from New-York took this mute film. His father appears @ 0:35, his mother @ 0:53, Benjamin the photographer appears @ 0:55.
The Lewin two story house of my grandparents Jacob (Jankel Ezekiel) and Miriam (Mirale) Lewin nee Tenenbaum, can be seen.
Today the address of our Lewin property in Długosiodło is 25 Dąbrowszczaków ulice, corner of Pułaskiego ulice, in the Tadeusz Kościuszko Rynek (Market Place). On the first floor of our house, there is presently (2017) a clothing store (Tania Odzież), exactly where the Lewin's sklep spożywczy (grocery store) was situated until the October 1939 deportation of the full Długosiodło Jewish population, some 1,000 persons, to the city of Białystok.
Most all houses in the center of Dlugosiodlo, around the Kościuszko Rynek and up and down Dąbrowszczaków street are Jewish property.
As a rule the people who lived in and around the village Rynek, founded it. Jews founded the village of Dlugosiodlo so they build their houses in and around the Market Place - the Kościuszko Rynek.
This clip was taken some 5 years before the Holocaust.
All 1,000 Jews of Długosiodło, were deported by the Germans on October 05, 1939, eastwards into the city of Bialystok, which in September 1939 became part of Soviet occupied Poland, as per the August 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
The Soviets allowed most of the Dlogosiodlo Jews, about 900 who consented to become Soviet citizens (in order to stay close to Długosiodło) to stay in in the Belarus region. The Soviet goal was to sovietaize this part of Poland by awarding Soviet citizenship to the Polish citizens.
The 100 Dlugosiodlo Jews who declined Soviet citizenship, including my mom's family Lewin, were announced by the NKVD as Polish Spies and Capitalist Pigs and deported on June 28, 1940 by trains deep eastwards to Ural Mountains Gulags. The Lewin family was incarcerated in the Pychim, Komi State Gulag. There they were subjected to deforestation hard labor during the harsh Siberia winters conditions, but most of them did survive WWII, including my mom's family: her parents Jankel and Mirale Lewin and her two brothers Josel and Rachmil Lewin. Her third brother Isaac Lewin, being an electrician, was drafted into the Red-Army, deported to the Far-East Soviet town of Vladivostok as an electrician in a Soviet POW Camp for high ranking German officers. Those German officers electrocuted him on September 1945 when he was fixing a power failure. One of them purposely rehooked the safety fuse.
The 900 Długosiodło Jews who did stay behind in the Belarus region, were captivated by the Germans, during the June 1941 'Operation Barbarossa'.
They were incarcerated in Ghettos across the Belarus region. Large groups of them were the Minsk, Baranowicze and Slonim Ghettos. During June 1941-August 1942 most all were shot or thrown alive into extermination pits in forests across Belarus. None of those 900 Dlugosiodlo Jews survived the various massacres.
Of the 100 Dlugosiodlo Jews incarcerated in 1940 in Soviets in Gulags merely 50 survived, among them my mom's family, absent one brother.
The last surviving Jewish person born in Dlugosiodlo on January 1922 who lives to date (2018) and remembers it all vividly, is my mom 97 years old Yona Liba Lewin Gover. She is the last living Jewish person born in the Długosiodło-Wyszków-Ostrow Maz. region in central Poland.
A Memorial for the Dlugosiodlo Jewish community victims was erected in the 1980s in Israel, in the Old Holon Cemetery.
The Jewish Cemetery of Dlugosiodlo was located just north of Dlugosiodlo on the road to the village of Bosewo. In 1940-1942 local Poles desecrated it, removed all the headstones and ransacked this Jewish cemetery. The Jewish headstones were used to pave local dirt roads... Today (2018), merely a memorial sign in Hebrew, English and Polish stands there.
