Cincinnati Parks' Krohn Conservatory: Orchid House
Orchid House:
The Krohn Conservatory Orchid House is made possible by a generous grant from the Helen G., Henry F., and Louise Teuchler Dornette Foundation.
Most tropical orchids are epiphytic, meaning that they grow on tree branches. Therefore, the man-made rocks and trees in this room are fitted with pockets to display the orchids as they bloom. Other accommodations include a high-pressure fog system that helps us keep the air constantly moist. It is a refreshing change in environment as you enter from the dry desert room.
Our collection includes various species of Cattleyas, Oncidiums (first close up), Paphiopedilums, Phalaenopsis (second close up), and many other unusual specimens.
The conservatory has been designated as a repository by United States Fish and Wildlife so we receive orchids that are confiscated at the borders when someone illegally tries to import them.
Each week orchids in peak bloom are brought from our growing facility, Warder Nursery, and placed on display at Krohn. This is an ever-changing display, so you must come often to truly enjoy their splendor.
Orchids are the largest of the flowering plant families with over 25,000 species.
Black orchids are a myth, the blooms come in every shade of the rainbow except this color.
While orchids are generally considered a tropical plant, they are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Vanilla comes from an orchid
Orchids have the smallest seeds in the world, most are comparable in size to dust particles.
The Krohn Conservatory hosts an orchid potting bee each spring and fall. Bring your orchid in to be repotted and get free growing advice

Cincinnati is a city in Ohio, on the Ohio River. The Over-the-Rhine district is known for its 19th-century architecture, including Findlay Market, which has food and craft vendors. To the north is the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. The Cincinnati Museum Center encompasses history, science and children's museums in the art deco Union Terminal. Works spanning 6,000 years are on display at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Cincinnati is Ohio's third largest city and the largest metro region. It lies on the north bank of the Ohio River in Southwest Ohio in the United States of America. Known as the Queen City or Queen of the West, Cincinnati was the only 19th century American city that left a favorable impression on the then 30-year-old English author Charles Dickens. “Cincinnati is a beautiful city; cheerful, thriving, and animated,” Dickens wrote in “American Notes.” “I have not often seen a place that commends itself so favorably and pleasantly to a stranger at the first glance as this does: with its clean houses of red and white, its well-paved roads, and foot-ways of bright tile. Nor does it become less prepossessing on a closer acquaintance.”
Avondale is a primarily residential urban neighborhood near the center of the city, notable for the presence of the Cincinnati Zoo.
Hyde Park is an upscale, largely white and upper class residential neighborhood. Mt. Adams is a trendy, upscale neighborhood located directly northeast of downtown Cincinnati. Clifton, not to be confused with a nearby Clifton Heights, is also located near the city center. Mt. Washington is an up and coming economically diverse neighborhood located on Cincinnati's east side.
Northside is an economically and racially diverse neighborhood notable for a strong sense of community investment and pride. Oakley is an up and coming neighborhood that borders Hyde Park. ver-the-Rhine (OTR) is the city's historic district. Price Hill is one of Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhoods, first settled in 1789 and named Price Hill in the 1870s after General Rees Price. West End the little bit that survived of this once large densely populated neighborhood would not be notable for travelers except for the Dayton Street Historic District. Riverfront/The Banks This is a newly developed area in downtown Cincinnati that falls between Great American Ballpark home of the Reds. Newport and Covington Though these neighborhoods are actually across the river in Kentucky.

Thing To Do In Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is the second oldest zoo in the United States and is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. It opened in 1875, just 14 months after the Philadelphia Zoo on July 1, 1874. The Reptile House is the oldest zoo building in the United States, dating from 1875.
The Cincinnati Zoo is located in the Avondale neighborhood of Cincinnati . It was founded on 65.4 acres (26.5 ha) in the middle of the city, and since then it has acquired some of the surrounding blocks and several reserves in Cincinnati's outer suburbs. The zoo conducts breeding programs, and was the first to successfully breed California sea lions. The zoo also has other breeding programs including South African cheetahs, Sumatran rhinoceros, Indochinese tigers, Malayan tigers, western lowland gorillas, pottos, and Masai giraffes. The Cincinnati Zoo was the home of Martha, the last living passenger pigeon, which died there in 1914. It was also home to the last living Carolina parakeet in 1918.
The zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). More Info :
