Kukke Shree Subrahmanya Temple on the special occasion of Skanda Shashti

Why you shoud visit Kukke Shree Subrahmanya Temple on Skanda Shashti?

1. Top most Subrahmanya Temple in India which is known for removing all the Snake related issues.
Even visited by Cricket legend “Sachin Tendulkar” when he had bad times during his career.
2. Five thousand years old Kukke Subrahmanya is the abode of nagas. Here pooja is offered to lord
Subrahmanya merged with serpent king Vasuki. Hence, believed to be the ultimate solace for
salvation from any sort of naga doshas.
3. During that time, the king of snakes Vasuki was meditating on this hill to escape from the claws of
Garuda, the holy eagle. At the behest of Shiva, Subramanya offered to protect Vasuki and ever since
got enshrined on the banks of Kumaradhara along with the serpent Vasuki. Hence Eagle is not
permitted to visit this village.
4. Kukke Subramanya temple is one among the seven holy places created by Parasurama. This is also
called as Gupta Kshetra. The devotees are given some soil of the snake hill here as Prasad also called
as “Mruthika Prasada” which is considered to remedy several illnesses. The central deity of this
temple is also praised as ‘Annadana Subbappa’ meaning the Lord who loves serving poor to the
needy.

Significance of Kukke Subrahmanya “Skanda Shashti”:
1. Garuda (Eagle) is prohibited in entire village. But only on the day of Shashti, Eagle will enter the
temple premises to seek blessings from the Lord.
2. During Subrahmanya Shasti the devotees participate in Beedhi Madesthana, the remover of their
physical and mental problems. As per the records of 2017, 5 lakh people visited during this day.
3. The rope tied to the chariot is believed to be the medicine for snake bite for which lakhs of devotees
visit and participate in Shahshti festival.
4. There will be 1 lakh diyas lit in the temple which is known as “Laksha Deepotsava” happens during
this period.
5. On this day Lord Subrahmanya is worshipped in the form of a 5-headed snake. It is a popular belief
that one who worships Lord Subrahmanya on this day is freed from ‘Sarpa Dosha’ (any curses from
snakes).
6. According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Subrahmanya is the General of Gods army and is also known
to be sharper of all gods. A person who gets the darshan of Lord Subrahmanya and performs rituals
like ‘daan’ and ‘snan (bath)’ on the day of Subrahmanya Shasthi will be freed from all his/her sins.

About Kukke
Lapped in the luxurious abundance of the beauty of the nature the village of Subramanya lies in the Sullia Taluk in Dakshina Kannada with a sancity which very few places can boast of. The temple is situated in the heart of the village. Nature reveals herself in all her unhidden beauty in the rivers, forests and mountains which the temples is surrounded by. It is about a 105 KM from Mangalore and can be easily reached by train,buses or taxis.

Subramanya used to be called as Kukke Pattana in the past. In the 'Shankara Vijaya' Anandagiri observes that Sri Shankaracharya camped here for a few days during his religious expedition (Digvijaya). Shankaracharya referred to this place as 'Bhaje Kukke Lingam' in his 'Subrahmanya Bhujangaprayata Stotram'.

Sri Subrahmanya kshetra has been brilliantly described in the 'Thirthakshetra Mahimanipurana' chapter of the Sahyadrikhanda comprised in the Sanatkumara Samhita of Skanda Purana. This kshetra is situated in the banks of the river 'Dhara' which originates in the Kumara mountain and proceeds to the western sea.

Kukke Subrahmanya Temple is the most famous Subrahmanya temple in Karnataka. It is about 100 kms from Mangalore and about 290 kms from Bangalore. While going from Bangalore it is on the same route as Dharmasthala. Subrahmanya is another name of Lord Kartikeya. People having sarpadosha worship in this temple to get rid of sarpadosha.

There are many guest houses of the temple. We stayed in one of the Guest Houses named “Kartikeya Krupa”. Thousands of devotees are given free Prasad (both lunch and dinner) here in this temple. There is a river known as Kumardhara River near Kukke Sri Subrahmanya temple where people take bath before going to have darshan of Lord Subrahmanya.
