World's EXREME RAILROADS: Sakleshpur - Subrahmanya Railway Line | Shiradi Ghats of Karnataka
Please SUBSCRIBE to my channel:
This video is a full coverage of the journey from Sakleshpur to Subrahmanya Road; onboard the 16515 Yesvantpur – Karwar Express (via. Kunigal, Mangaluru Jn).
The special attraction of this 55 km journey between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road is that the train descends 786 metres in just 55 km. The train goes through the picturesque Shiradi Ghats of Karnataka. Sakleshpur is situated at 906 meters above the Mean Sea Level (MSL) whereas Subrahmanya Road at at 120 meters above the MSL. This says how much the train descends in this section. The time taken to cover this portion is slightly more than 2.5 hours. So, this video is an effort to show you the most of this beautiful railroad. The terrain and the weather condition make it vulnerable for safe railway operation – it is an extreme railroad of India. This railway line is also known as the “Green Route Trek”; it is very popular among the trekkers of Western Ghats. Note: I am not sure if TREKKING IN THE RAILWAY LINE IS ILLEGAL. I think it is prohibited.
A brief history of the line:
The Sakleshpur – Subramanya Road section was the part of the erstwhile Hassan – Mangaluru (Mangalore) Metre Gauge (MG) railway line, which was commissioned in 1976 - 77. However, under project uni-gauge; even this railway line was converted to Broad Gauge (BG). So, the MG train service in the section was closed in 1996 for gauge conversion works. The BG trains were restored in the section from 2006 – 07. This railway comes under Mysuru (Mysore) division of South Western Railway (SWR).
The train operation in this downhill portion needs very much attention. Continuous and effective braking is very much necessary so that the train does not reach run away speed. In order to improve the braking power of the train; a pair of additional locomotives are attached at Sakleshpur. These locomotives are called BRAKER locomotives. In the reverse direction, when a train climbs uphill between Subrahmanya Road and Sakleshpur, supplementary power is needed at the rear end of the train; which are called BANKER locomotives. In this video, you will see BANKER locomotives pushing the 16576 Mangaluru Jn – Yesvantpur Gomteshwara Express, while it had a crossing with our train at Shiribagilu. The BANKER locomotives which were attached in the front of our train are detached at Subrahmanya Road and our original locomotives hauls it again towards Karwar via. Mangaluru.
The train actions in the video are:
1. Hubli (UBL) homed twin EMD locos WDG4D 70506 (leading) & WDG4 12073 powering a Departmental Train, spotted at Donigal.
2. Erode (ED) homed EMD WDG4 12808 loco hauling 16576 Gomteshwara Express, crosses with our train at Shiribagilu. Gomteshwara Express is banked by Gooty (GY) homed twin EMD locos WDG4D 70668 & WDG4 12385 (master unit).
3. Loaded BOXN Rake towards Sakleshpur waiting at Subrahmanya Road hauled by Pune homed twin EMD locos WDG4D 70397 (leading) & WDG4 12381. The train will be banked for the up-gradient by the BRAKER locos of our train; which would be detached here at Subrahmanya Road station
Our train is hauled from Yesvantpur by ALCo WDG3A 13297 of DLS Krishnarajapuram (KJM). The BRAKER locomotives of our train are KJM homed EMD WDG4 twins, 70186 (leading) and 70180 (trailing). The BANKER locos are attached and detached at Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road respectively. The ALCo WDG3A hauls our train upto Karwar, with a reversal at Mangaluru Jn.
The stations in the route are:
1. Sakleshpur (906 m above MSL)
2. Donigal (842 m above MSL)
3. Kadaragavalli (718 m above MSL)
4. Yedakumari (576 m above MSL)
5. Harebetta (462 m above MSL)
6. Shiribagilu (282 m above MSL)
7. Subrahmanya Road (120 m above MSL)
I apologize for the rain drops in the lens appearing many a times to spoil the beauty of the video. I tried my best to wipe my camera lens from time to time, but the intensity and the frequency of the rain was too high.
I suggest everyone to go for this train ride through the Western Ghats, you will definitely enjoy. The camera can record only 10 % of the beauty of this place.
