On March 17th 1963, Her Majesty, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Kununurra, Western Australia, to see the Australian National Development, of the Ord River Irrigation Project.
The Kununurra Historical Society have created this video from three 8mm colour films, and other photographs from the archive. These videos were created and uploaded to comemmorate 50 years since the Royal Tour came to Kununurra.

These photographs include the manufacturing of Wirraway aircraft at the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) and of the CAC facility at Fisherman's Bend, Melbourne between circa 1939 and 1943. The images are from the Australian War Memorial (online in 2004) and this digital video was made in 2005 for the Kununurra Museum - Wirraway-Challenge Display.
The display revolves around the Cockpit Canopy of A20-62, was opened on March 20th 1942 2005, the same date of the 1942 forced-landing of Wirraway A20-62 on the far north Kimberley coast, by Flight Sergeants Lew Dwyer (pilot) and Warwick Carmody. Kununurra Museum has the story of the subsequent rescue by Charlie Pretlove and four Aboriginal stockmen from Carlton Hill Station.

On this day (March 3rd) in 1942, Wyndham, Western Australia suffered its first air-raid when it came under attack by Japanese aircraft. On the same day Broome, Western Australia suffered the 2nd most devastating attack on Australian soil during WWII.

This beautiful 16mm colour film was shot by cinematographer, Kevin Richards, former WA Ag. Dept. Entomologist, who made the film, on the Banks of the Ord.
Both films were provided to the Kununurra Historical Society (KHS), by the National Film & Sound Archive (NF&SA) , as high quality uncompressed digital on a hard drive, art the request of the Richards Family, with great appreciation, by KHS.
The family also gave us rights to make use for fundraising or making other documentaries form these films as we see fit. Anybody can copy and use for their own personal research, however any further use, must be requested. A full uncompressed version can be supplied to commercial enterprise wishing to make use of this for a negotiable fee for which permission must be sought before any commercial use. Contact us.

This is Kununurra
Kununurra – land of big waters – is found in Australia’s stunning and remote Kimberley region of Western Australia.

After a good ‘wet’ season, the waterfalls are pumping and transform the landscape. Surely some of the world’s best looking storms can be found up here!

A favourite of the Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster, the Waringarri Corroboree under the Stars is an evening of culture and connection.
A corroboree is an event where Australian Aboriginals interact with the Dreamtime through dance, music and costume.
Their bodies painted in different ways, and they wore various adornments, which were not used every day.
The word corroboree was coined by the European settlers of Australia in imitation of an east coast local Aboriginal Australian word caribberie.

Wirraway-Challenge - A Story of Survival & Rescue in the far north East Kimberley Region coastline, within 6km of the Northern Territory border with Western Australia at the Meridian of 129 degrees east longitude. The story begins just weeks after Darwin was bombed and North Australia was under daily attacks by the Japanese. Another Wirraway from 12 squadron, had hit a tree on
take-off at the old Drysdale River Mission runway (Pago Pago - near Kalumburu), some days before. On March 20th 1942, Flight Sergeants, (pilot) Lew Dwyer and Warwick Carmody were instructed to fly to Drysdale and retrieve the Vickers .303 Gas Operated (GO) machine guns (GO guns), and any retrievable, useful parts, so had a toolbox for the salvage mission. This was the same day that Broome and Derby were bombed by the Japanese.

This Digital Video (DV) set in 8 parts, was originally crafted in 2005 as a DVD for the Kununurra Museum - Wirraway-Challenge Display. This has now been made public in November 2015, as we now have a rights agreement with, and thanks to, the ABC. They have allowed us to use the audio from a radio interview made in 2005, by Vanessa Mills of ABC Kimberley Regional radio, Broome, as well as a radio interview recorded by Adrienne Francis at the Kununurra Museum for the ABC Country Hour. These are both used as the audio for some parts of the DV.
It is also now 10 years since the opening of the display on March 20th 2005 by one of Wirraway A20-62's pilots (in March 1942), Lew Dwyer. The forced-landing site was first located and filmed, then salvaged by Andrew, Mario and Marieke in September and October 2004 and then creating these DVs and the Wirraway-Challenge display which was opened by Lew Dwyer at the Kununurra Museum on March 20th 2005, the same date they force landed in 1942.

Here the story of finding the Wirraway A20-62 (March 20th 1942) forced-landing site in 2004, on the far north East Kimberley Region coastal saltmarsh, about 6km from the Northern Territory border (129 degrees east longitude), just inside Western Australia. Along the border coastline, where they force-landed in March 1942 is right in the middle of the widest part of the huge coastal saltmarsh that is there, being almost 40km from the bush to the actual coastline.
The site was found while looking for glacial rocks that were marked on an old Geological map (Later they were found to not be glacial tillite, but in fact river tumbled rocks from an ancient Ord-Victoria River system ? - Here being between the Keep River and Cambridge Gulf).
Many parts which were salvaged in September and October 2004 are now on permanent display at the Kununurra Museum.
The pilot of the Wirraway, Lew Dwyer phoned me a few weeks ago, and has regularly since 2004, Lew turned 94 a few weeks ago in October 2015.

In 1986 Ursula Brimble recorded an Oral History with Maggie Lilly for the Kununurra Historical Society and the State Library of WA - Here is an extract, about the place-named 'miles' out of Wyndham. Have you ever wondered about the accuracy of the various place-named miles out of Wyndham, Maggie Lilly settles the argument saying, I don't know how they came to do this, they must have measured them with a green-hide rope on a wet day as the saying goes
