Kurinji Andavar Temple is a fine example of Dravidian-style architecture and enjoy sweeping views of Kodaikanal’s rolling green countryside.
The tranquil Kurinji Temple sits on the top of a mound overlooking the picturesque green hills of Kodaikanal. It’s a place to experience welcoming spirituality and admire the colorful Dravidian architectural style, which is common in South India. Kurinji Temple celebrates the Hindu god Lord Muruga and was built in the 1930s. It takes its name from the kurinji, a purplish-blue flower that blossoms once every 12 years on Kodaikanal’s hill slopes.
A major highlight of the temple is its main gopuram (gateway). Take time to appreciate the gateway’s multilevel tower adorned with intricately carved designs and brightly colored god icons. Observe the busy hive of activity outside the temple, where approaching pilgrims purchase flowers and incense from the animated hawkers. Step through the huge wooden doors to feel a sense of serenity and check out the various shrines. Watch respectfully as devotees ask for blessings and lay gifts at the feet of the deities.
Many people come to the temple for its spectacular views. Gaze out across terraced fields and undulating landscapes. Spot the surrounding Palani Hills and the rooftops of small hamlets. Ask a local about the next estimated blossoming of the kurinji flower, when the hills are covered with a carpet of vividly colored blue flowers.
The temple is about a 10-minute drive from the town center of Kodaikanal. Auto-rickshaws, public buses and taxis provide easy and regular access to the temple throughout the day. Alternatively, walk to the temple following the pleasant 40-minute uphill path from Kodaikanal Lake. While at the temple, be sure to browse the cluster of handicraft shops for wooden sculptures and religious paraphernalia, among other souvenir items.
Kurinji Temple is open daily and admission is free. This is an active temple so dress appropriately and be respectful of the worshippers.

Kurinji Andavar temple is located about 5 kms from Kodai Bus stand and 3 kms from lake uphill though Chettiar Park. Kurinji means “hills” and Andavar means “God” in Tamil language. This is a popular temple dedicated to Lord Murugan (Kartikeya). As this is loated on a hill you can see beautiful views of surroundings including Palani hills. There is a large dining hall inside temple campus where devotees are given free prasad on everyday. We also took free lunch here in this temple.

The Kuzhanthai Velappar Temple (Kulandai Velayudha Swami Tirukkovil) has three thousand years of history and was consecrated by his holiness Bhogar. The idol is made of Dasabashanam. This temple comes under Pazhani Devasthanam.[7] Every year Poombarai celebrates Ther Thiruvizha (car festival) for Lord Murga. It falls on Kettai nakshatra which comes after Thaip Poosam. Normally in Thai or Maasi month.

Kurinji Andavar temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan or Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva and brother of Lord Ganesh. It is located on a hill about 5 kms from Kodai bus stand. There is a big dining hall inside temple campus. Everyday atleast 100 devotees are given free prasad during lunch time. Prasad is given on first come first serve basis. If there is more crowd you have to stand in a queue to collect free token for lunch. After their capacity is exhausted they stop giving tokens. We were there at lunch time and got free lunch in the temple. Food includes rice, sambar, curry, butter mil, papad etc.

Kodaikanal is a hill station located in the eastward hills of the Western Ghats in the state of Tamil Nadu. The place is a popular retreat from the hot and humid climate of the lower areas and is located 2,133 meters above sea level. Kodaikanal is also home to the rare Kurunji Flower which blooms just once in 12 years. The area is comprised mainly of meadows and grasslands with a thick forest cover containing eucalyptus, cypress and acacia and pear trees. The climate is usually cool throughout the year with temperatures not going beyond 20 degrees in the summer months of May and June. The economy is mainly supported by tourism and the people are quiet familiar with visitors. Here’s the list of the best places to visit in Kodaikanal.
1. Berijam Lake

Berijam Lake is surrounded by a picturesque cover of greenery and is a home to a wide verity of flora and fauna and also serves as the source of drinking water to the nearby villages. A special permit from the forest department is needed to enter the place and only a certain number of vehicles are allowed. The fire tower, lake view and the medicine forest are the main attractions here. Entry to the area is restricted between 9.30 am to 3 pm as wild animals like panther, deer, snakes and bison are often spotted near the lake during these hours.
2. Coakers Walk

Coakers Walk is one place you must visit when in Kodaikanal. It is a 1 kilometre long pathway constructed on the slopes of a hillock and is one of the most serene places you will ever visit in India. The kilometre long walk provides the most picturesque views of the hills and a rare phenomenon where your shadow is cast on the clouds that envelop the area called ‘Brocken Spectre’ can be witnessed.
3. Kodai Lake
Also known as the Kodaikanal Lake, this is a star shaped lake that is located amidst the most calm and serene environment. This lake is a home to various birds and the 5 kilometre long path that is near the shores of the lake is one of the favourite places where tourist come for a casual walk and enjoy the beauty of the nature. Pedal boats and Row boats can be availed by the tourists here along with horses and bicycles.
4. Kurinjiandavar Temple
Kurinji Andavar Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan or Kartikeya and is home to the famous kurunji flower which blooms once in 12 years. The temple was established by the European lady in 1936 and after adopting Hinduism is known by the name ‘Lady Ramanathan’. The temple is a popular among the tourist due to the views of the surroundings and the famous spot of the flower.
5. Dolphin’s Nose

A popular trekking spot in Kodaikanal, Dolphin’s Nose is rock which projects over a wide chasm which is approximately 2,000 meters deep. Its peculiar shape is the reason behind the name and one can witness the most breathtaking views of the Western Ghats from here. One can also access the amazing Pambar or the Liril Falls here which is an amazing hidden attraction.
6. Bryant Park
A famous picnic spot, The Bryant Park is 20.5 acre botanical garden and is situated at the east end of the Kodaikanal Lake. The park is filled with a variety of flora which includes around 325 species of trees, cactus and shrubs and a massive 740 species of roses. The various horticulture and flower shows are organised every summer and is a popular place where you can relax and get lost in the lush green surroundings.

Kodaikanal is a beautiful and picturesque hill station placed in the Palani hills in the Western Ghats. The town also has been christened as the Princess of hill stations due to its scenic beauty and popularity. Situated in the Dindagul district of Tamil Nadu, the town is atop a plateau at the height of 2133 m above sea level.

The town of Kodaikanal lies between the valleys Parappar and Gundar. To the north of Kodaikanal there is a hill that slopes down to Vilpatti village and Pallangi village. To the east, the hills slope down to the lower Palani Hills. On the south of Kodaikanal lies Cumbum Valley and to the west is a plateau leading to Manjampatti Valley and Anamalai Hills.
The meaning of Kodaikanal in Tamil is Gift of the Forest. However, there are four versions regarding the name since the word Kodai is four different meanings. The first is “the end of the forest”, second is “the forest of creepers”, the third means “the forest of the summer” and the fourth translates as “the gift of the forest”.

A glimpse through the history
The first residents of the hill station were people belonging to the Palaiyar tribe. The place has been mentioned in the Sangam Literature of the early Christian era. The British first entered the place in 1821 under Lt. B.Ward. They constructed and developed the town in 1845. Later during the 20th century several prominent Indians relocated to this place and settled here.
How to reach Kodaikanal
The airport closest to Kodaikanal is Madurai which lies 120 kilometres away from the hill station. Madurai airport is connected to Coimbatore and Chennai airports. Both these airports connect Kodaikanal to cities around the country and the world. The railway station nearest to Kodaikanal is Kodai road which is 3km away. The Coimbatore Junction is the nearest major railway station which is connected to cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Ernakulam and Trivandrum. Kodaikanal can also be reached by bus from cities across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Buses are also available from Bangalore.

Kodaikanal experiences good weather conditions throughout the year. The best time to visit Kodaikanal are between April to June as well as from September to October. Bear Shola Falls is a small waterfall in Kodaikanal about 3 kms from Kodai Bus stand. The last half km is a trekking through the forest till the waterfall. Vehicles cannot go this last half km till the waterfall. there is no light in the forest there is no possibility of staying or going in the evening.
Chettiar Park is about 4 kms away from Kodai Bus Stand on the way to Kurinji Andavar Temple. It is the second most important park of Kodaikanal next to Bryant Park. Lots of tourists visit the park. Entry ticket 15 Rs per head, Children 10 Rs, Camera 25 Rs. However the size of the park is small (or medium) and you may visit it well within half an hour.
Kurinji Andavar temple is located about 5 kms from Kodai Bus stand and 3 kms from lake uphill though Chettiar Park. Kurinji means “hills” and Andavar means “God” in Tamil language. This is a popular temple dedicated to Lord Murugan (Kartikeya).
Guna Caves (also called “devil’s Kitchen”) is located about 10 kms from Kodaikanal. It is one of the caves in between the “Pillar Rocks” or the three Gigantic Boulders on the mountains. This place became popular after a Tamil movie named “Guna” starring “Kamal Hasan” was shot here in 1992.
Coakers walk is a half kilometer trekking on the hillside in Kodaikanal. Vehicles not allowed on this road. Entry ticket Rs 10/- per head, camera Rs 20/-. It starts from Bryant Park at the heart of the town.
This museum is about 6 kms from Kodaikanal bus stand by the side of the Highway. This museum also called as Sacred Heart College Museum as it is managed by the Sacred Heart College of ¬Kodaikanal. This museum is also called as Shembaganur museum as this is located in Shembaganur area.
Silver Cascade waterfall is about 8 kms from Kodaikanal by the side of Kodai-Dindigal Highway. Anybody going to Kodaikanal by road can definitely see it by the roadside. It is quite a big waterfall and generally does not dry up in summer. The water to this waterfall comes from the overflowing water of Kodai Lake
Sri Satya Sai Baba has an Ashram in Kodaikanal. Though he was mainly staying in Puttaparthi, he was also sometimes visiting Whitefield Ashram in Bangalore and Sai Sruthi in Kodaikanal
Moir Point is about 10 kms from Kodaikanal and 3 kms from Pillar Rocks. You have to go there by taxi. Generally Taxi drivers make a package of 10 to 15 points on the same route and cover them in half day or full day. You have to buy tickets at the entrance.
Boating in Kodaikanal Lake one of the most important tourist attractions of Kodaikanal. Kodaikanal lake is a huge manmade lake crerated during 1863 located at the center of the city. There are many boating clubs around the lake providing padal boat and rowing boat facility.
There are three big boulders on the mountains which is known as pillar rocks. This is one of the interesting view points about 10 kms away from Kodaikanal. You can buy tickets at the entrance to go inside the area.
There are also many other smaller attraction, such as, (1) Dum Dum rock view point- on the way to kodaikanal by the side of kodaikanal highway. (2)Rotary children’s park by the side of kodaikanal lake. (3) Horror house and 7D theater by the side of Kodaikanal lake- We enjoyed 7D theater which was Rs 150/- per head. There is a horror house and many other video games in the complex. (4)Kaali Amma Temple in Kodaikanal. (5) Bryant Park- biggest park of kodaikanal on the heart of the city, (6) La Saleth Church- about 4 kms from Kodai bus stand (7) Shembaganur area and Sacred heart College (8) Mahaveer Jain Temple- on the way to Chettiar park and Kurunji Andavar Temple (9)Upper lake view- the view of kodaikanal lake from upper lake road (10)Solar observatory- nothing to see.
