Kurumbera Fort: Medinipur by Tourist Destination

The Kurumbera Fort is situated in Gaganeshwar village, southeast of Keshiari, at about four kilometres from town Belda, Midnapur, West Bengal. The fort has small quarters and temples. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. In local language Kurum means stone & Bera means fence. So it is easy to understand that the name contains a meaning of an arena fenced by stone. This monument resembles the architecture of ancient Odisha.
Written in Oriya inscription that during the rule of Surya Vamsi king of Odisha Gajapati Kapilendra Dev, this temple structure was built during the period 1438 to 1469. The shiva installed inside of the temple was known as Kapileshwar Shiva. The place was originally a temple complex which was later on expanded to provide shelter to pilgrims. Later it was converted into a military cantonment by the mughal & Maratha soldiers who invaded Bengal. That was when the temple complex was known as fort. Modern era British documents describe it as a fort. Another inscription written in Oriya found in the compound says it had many new structures built by one Mohanmmed Tahir during the period of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb that includes a three domed mosque built in 1699.
The structure resembles the medieval architecture of Odisha, while also incorporating elements of later Mughal architecture. The fort contains a three-domed structure over a platform, along with a sacrificial altar. Although most parts of this fort and its structures are in ruins, the ASI has taken considerable effort to protect the structures from collapsing by using cement and lime mortar to shore up the external pillars. The pillars support a roof which is shaped as a flower. Circular pillars were used to the rear of the left-dome.

Turn to the right into a “Kutcha” (Mud) road, Gaganeshwar village lies at about 2 km from Kukai.

There is huge courtyard ringed by pillared corridor and in the middle there are three spherical domes. There is also some kind of an altar in the middle. In 1568, the Afghan Sultanate of Bengal and Bihar invaded Odisha which included the undivided Midnapore district of West Bengal. Later, Mughals occupied Odisha after defeating the Afghans of Bengal in the battle of Tukaroi in 1575. They divided Odisha Subah into five Sarkars and this part was included in the Jalesar Sarkar. Although religiously motivated invasions by Mughal generals into Odisha happened from time to time, these became more frequent during the reign of Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb's forces plundered many temples of Odisha, including Midnapore. Aurangzeb also issued a fatwa to demolish the Jagannath temple. The Kurumbera fort and temple complex were attacked and converted to a mosque during the reign of Aurangzeb. In 1752, the Midnapore area was separated from Odisha proper and merged with Muslim Bengal

To reach Gaganeshwar, take the State Highway to Keshiari, at about 27 km from Kharagpur, turn left towards Belda and reach a village junction called Kukai, at about 2 km from Keshiari. Turn to the right into a “Kutcha” (Mud) road, Gaganeshwar village lies at about 2 km from Kukai.

About the Fort:

Though the most parts of this fort and its structures are in ruins, the ASI, has taken considerable effort to protect the structures from collapsing by using cement and lime mortar for holding the external pillars.The pillars hold a roofing which is shaped as a flower. The usage of circular pillar to the rear of the left-dome seems interesting.This architecture also resemble great similarity with Raibania Fort of Balasore district of Odisha.

The presence of an inscription stating about its usage is present right behind of the domed structure.

Kurumbera Fort is situated in a village named Gaganeshwar, at about 2 Kms from Keshihari which is at distance of 27 Kms from Kharagpur in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, India. Kharagpur is well connected both by Rail & Road.
Despite being a protected monument under the ASI, there are no data available about this fort.It is assumed that the Kurumbera fort and temple complex which were part of Odisha, were attacked and converted to a mosque during the reign of tyrannical mughal ruler Aurangzeb.
The structure resembles the medieval architecture of Odisha, while also incorporating elements of later Mughal architecture. The fort contains a three-domed structure over a platform, along with a sacrificial altar. Although most parts of this fort and its structures are in ruins, the ASI has taken considerable effort to protect the structures from collapsing by using cement and lime mortar to shore up the external pillars. On december 24, 2017, two friends were decided to travel to some unknown place far away from city in search for unknown from where we can return same day. after a long research we decided to travel Gaganeswar village. so we travelled to Kurumbera fort, Gaganeswar. The ride was awesome. And when we reached the fort, it was mesmerizing, we were shocked and surprised. Our eyes cant believe that such kind of beautyful places are there near calcutta and we search for weekend ride plans to other known places. I love to travel on new road, new route, and new places.
