Kushiro is a city on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. It’s known for the large Kushiro Marsh, home to deer, sea eagles and Japanese cranes. A circular trail runs through the marsh from the Kushiro Marsh Observatory. On the coast, Fisherman’s Wharf is home to restaurants and the glass-covered EGG Garden. Nearby, Hokkaido Kushiro Art Museum displays works, including photography and sculpture, by local artists.
Hokkaido, Kushiro 釧路湿原
Kushiro, located in East Hokkaido, boasts of the largest wetlands in Japan. There are a few observatories in the area, well maintained wooden walkways, paved roads, a slow train line, and canoe tours where you can enjoy viewing various wild animals, and these huge grasslands.
We went there in early autumn, and saw white-tailed eagles, cranes, deer, and other creatures.
北海道の東岸に位置する釧路には、日本最大の湿原、釧路湿原があります。野性の生物を観察し、広大な草原を見渡すことのできる展望台や、木道、遊歩道などが整備されており、ゆったりと走るJR釧網線(ノロッコ号)、またはカヌーツアーなどで、湿原の自然を楽しむことができます。
私たちは初秋に訪れましたが、オジロワシ、タンチョウ、エゾシカなどを見ることができました。

Just a peek into Kushiro’s famous Washo market

Last day in HOKKAIDO!!! We drive around the NATIONAL PARK KUSHIRO SHITSUGEN and observe the wetlands from various viewpoints and observatories, meet a cute but dead baby of Red-Crowned Cranes, a bunch of Ezo Deers, then observe the lotus ice phenomenon on the meandering KUSHIRO River and a lovely sunset at a farm hoping Cranes would fly over. But there's so much more to see in Hokkaido!! I already can't wait to go again!!

Waking up at 5 am with a Hokkaido Cheese Cake & Drip Coffee and then putting on loads of warm clothes for the 6 am trip to the Otowa Bridge (just around the corner from Tsurumidai feeding ground) where us paparazzi and serious photographer wait for hours in up to 4 Fahrenheit (MINUS 20 Celsius) to snap an artistic photo worthy of a National Geographic release, of the Red-Crowned Cranes of Japan sleeping in Kushiro River. In the recent years though the Cranes are quite far away from the bridge. My zoom is a 600 but you better bring one stronger than that. And actually I was lucky that we didn't stand around there for hours and instead drove around to other secret spots with stunning views and birds! Thanks to Hotel Taito and owner Mr. Wada who is the best guide you could dream of in this area of Hokkaido!!

Japanese Waterbirds, Hokkaido 2019
Ever since I saw the BBC documentary Earthflight, I've wanted to go to Hokkaido in Japan to see its many beautiful birds frolicking and feeding in the snow. And in February, as a somewhat unexpected treat from my parents, I finally got my chance! And boy was it a dream come true. In all my years of birdwatching, I don't think I've ever been anywhere more beautiful or more peaceful and quiet than Hokkaido. And of course the birding is to die for. For those of you who are interested, we went to the Akan Crane Centre (Cranes), Lake Kussharo (swans) and Lake Furen (eagles), all located within a few hours drive from Kushiro.

千葉県にある黒原不動滝は、いすみ鉄道・総元駅から徒歩10分。
脇道を下っていくと、幅20mに広がる大きな滝が目の前に広がります。
3月末から5月中頃までは、滝上に鯉のぼりが掲げられます。
エビも釣れるそうなので、家族で出かけてみてはいかがでしょうか？
