Trekking in the Alay Mountains - Kyrgyzstan (Truly Nomadic Land Trek)
Having been all over Central Asia for the last 4 years, it's no secret that I love hiking in Kyrgyzstan! So on my most recent visit I was desperate to head south to the Alay Mountains, and check out the brand new 5-day Truly Nomadic Land trek.
This amazing 64km trek goes through some of the best landscapes in Southern Kyrgyzstan, and I couldn't believe just how beautiful it was. I hiked on my own with a guide and a porter, stayed with nomadic families in their yurt camps, met lots of friendly shepherds and climbed to the top of spectacular mountain passes.
Hiking in the Alay Mountains on the Truly Nomadic Land trek was a fantastic experience, even if it was a little challenging for me. The weather didn't always cooperate and the mountain passes were quite difficult, but it was so worth it to learn more about the Kyrgyz nomads' way of life, culture, and of course enjoy the mountain scenery!
If you're looking for a unique adventure and are keen to go trekking in Kyrgyzstan, the Alay Mountains are the place to be! I hope you like my hiking vlog of what it was like, and are inspired to do it yourself.
Check out my ultimate guide to the Truly Nomadic Land trek in Kyrgyzstan here:

A Nomad Olympic Games in Kyrgyzstan | Travel Vlog
On the vlog today, a nomad Olympic games in Kyrgyzstan
Today in Kyrgyzstan I got to see an event I was really hoping to see. There was an event put on with the help of the USAID BGI in Kyrgyzstan which was kind of like a nomad Olympic games. So, that's where the bulk of today's travel vlog is situated.
But, before starting I headed out on a horse trek with my local guide to talk a little bit about nomad life and to get some views of the beautiful lake. Unfortunately, the clouds rolled in and at the panoramic view we were left kind of skunked for views. Still the horse ride up was beautiful. The countryside here in Kyrgyzstan is just stunning. Absolutely stunning.
From the horse trek, we stopped at a yurt camp to get some snacks and drink some fermented mare's milk and then caught a ride to the nomad games.
There were all sorts of events at the nomad games. Basically, any skill set that was or is used by nomads was on display. In many ways, it's kind of like a rodeo. We started doing rodeos in North America when cowboys started to worry that their skills were starting to fade. It's the same here in Kyrgyzstan.
So, there was archery, as the travel vlog thumbnail indicates. There was also eagle hunting, horse races, yurt building, and other events.
But, the main event was Kok-Boru. This is known locally as horseback football. Tourists like to call it dead goat football or dead goat soccer. It's a traditional sport in which teams drag around a dead goat while on horseback trying to put it into their opponent's goal. It's a crazy sport, but it's traditional here in Kyrgyzstan.
Tomorrow, I'll have an entire travel vlog dedicated to dead goat football here in Kyrgyzstan, so stay tuned for that.
I ended the day completely sun burnt, but also just so stoked on life. So far, my time here in Kyrgyzstan has been incredible and I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow here in this beautiful country. The travel vlog continues with tomorrow's show from here in Central Asia.

--~--
Are you planning a trip to Kyrgyzstan in 2017? Looking for Things to Do in Kyrgyzstan in and around the Bishkek area? In this video First World Traveller briefly checks out Ala Archa National Park, a large 200 sq km park roughly 50 minutes south of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
Ala Archa National Park was established in 1976 and offers numerous activities from hiking and mountain climbing around the various hills, mountains, glaciers and rivers. I went in Summer therefore the views are probably more spectacular in Winter!
The Archa (where the park gets it's name) is a Juniper tree common to the area and Kyrgyzstan's altitude. It was once believed that these trees chase off evil spirits, however if they were planted too close to a house they would suck the energy from those living inside!

Things to do in Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Hey guys we're in Kyrgyzstan. Yeah, new country for both of us so that is pretty exciting. First time in Central Asia so we are stoked to be here. Yeah and over the next few days we are going to be horse-trekking in Song Köl so we're going to take you along but before we get there we're making a little stop. First up Burana Tower right here. So we're going to climb to the top. Are you ready? Yes.
Greetings from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan! Hello from Central Asia. It is our first time here and we are going to be spending a few days here in the capital. So we're going to take you on a little tour and show you fifteen things to do around Bishkek (Бишкек). It should be fun.
And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bishkek (Бишкек). As you can probably tell from this video, this city is the kind of place that you experience as opposed to ticking off attractions, so it ended up being a fairly relaxing trip after a few busy weeks of travel around Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан - Киргизия). As always, if you have any suggestions of things to do in Bishkek, feel free to share your tips with fellow travellers in the comments section below. See you next time!
Hey guys we're at the World Nomad Games (Дүйнөлүк көчмөндөр оюндары) in Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан) and this is basically like the Olympics for Nomadic Games and Culture.
So we're going to show you around. We're going to be hear for several days but first the Opening Night Ceremony.
The following morning we went up to the jailoo, also known as the pasture, where they had set up a folk village so visitors could wander around and learn about Kyrgyz culture. After catching the opening dance, we set out to visit the various camps, each showcasing a different region.
So it is lunchtime here in Bishkek (Бишкек), Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) and today we are going to be having a feast. We are going to be sampling all of the traditional dishes that we've been eating over the last three weeks because that is how long we've been traveling in the country. So we're ordering a big spread. This is probably enough food for like five or six people but Sam and I are going to try and eat it all and just showcase what Central Asian cuisine is all about. So we hope you enjoy.
Good morning from Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан). It is time for a day trip because we've been spending a lot of time at the World Nomad Games and it is time to get out and get to know the country a little bit. So we're taking a day trip to Karakol (Каракол). We're going to be doing some hiking, visiting waterfalls.
Well good morning. It is Saturday here in Bishkek (Бишкéк) and it is our last day in the city so we figured why not get out of the city get close to nature.
So it is time for another apartment tour. Right now we're in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. We've been traveling around the country for three weeks and we've spent ten of those days here in the capital.
Brought to you by &

Are you planning a trip to Kyrgyzstan in 2017? Looking for Things to Do in Kyrgyzstan? This video and playlist could be for you!
First World Traveller heads to Bishkek, which is the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan is located in Central Asia, bordering Kazakhstan to the North, China to the East, the other Stans (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan) to the west and Afghanistan to the south (although not bordering).
Kyrgyzstan is a brilliantly diverse country, with influences from India, China, Russia, the Middle East and more. This video details a trip to Osh Bazaar in Bishkek, which is typical of Kyrgyz bazaars, selling clothing, souvenirs and most interestingly, Kyrgyz food, from Besbarmaq, Boorsoq, Kyrgyz Naan, Plov and more.
Also, check out the food area of Osh Bazaar, including local fruit & vegetables, flour, rice, dried fruit & nuts and spices, which together result in an amazing aroma and a great introduction to Kyrgyzstan!

Kyrgyzstan travel experience
Probably not on your travel list, but it should be! Wonderful nature, warm and friendly people (mostly), not crowded by tourists and a lot, lot to see, try and enjoy. We visited the capital - Bishkek, Song Kul lake, Karakol, Altyn Arashan etc. It was really an adventure! Not for everyone! Don't expect public transport outside the city.

Hiking for Petroglyphs in the Countryside of Kyrgyzstan | Travel Vlog
On my first day in the countryside of Kyrgyzstan we went hiking for petroglyphs.
Today, the travel vlog goes into territory unknown: the Kyrgyzstan countryside.
Bishkek was really cool, but I've definitely been looking forward to getting into the country and exploring some of the nature that Kyrgyzstan has to offer. And, right away, leaving the city there were already signs of the mountains and the stunning landscapes.
Our drive out of the city took us first to an archeological site called Burana Tower. It was a bit of a strange site, to be sure, but it was worth the quick stop, and I climbed to the top for some views of the Kyrgyz landscapes. Then, we pushed on.
Honestly, I've been a little bit tired lately. I haven't been sleeping well at all, and feeling like I need to catch up. Thankfully, the drive was a bit long and that meant that I could catch some sleep in the car as we drove towards the interior of Kyrgyzstan,
Eventually, we made it to Bokonbayevo where I met up with a local hiking guide who took my on a trek into the mountains to go find some petroglyphs left behind by buddists.
The trek might just have been a teaser into what the landscapes of Kyrgyzstan might look like, but if it was any indication at all, this is going to be absolutely beautiful.
After trekking, we made our way down to my Yurt camp along Issyk-Kul lake, the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan. Though I call it a night and don't vlog it, I did get out and shoot some photography along the lake before calling it a night.
Tomorrow, I've got another travel vlog from here in Kyrgyzstan as there's a local nomad games happening here. It should be a lot of fun!

Kyrgyzstan Motorcycle Trip 2018
Motorcycle trip from Osh to Lake Song Kul (Day 1), Toktogul (Day 2) and back to Osh (Day 3)
Route highly recommended, however would suggest doing it in smaller pieces:
Day 1 Osh - Kazarman
Day 2 Kazarman - Song Kul
Day 3 Song Kul - Kyzyl-Oi
Day 4 Kyzyl-Oi - Toktogul
Day 5 Toktogul - Osh
We spent between 12 and 13 hours a day (day 1 and 2) on the bikes and reached the daily destinations after dark. NOT RECOMMENDED.
Kyrgyzstan is an absolutely stunning place and I can't wait to go back. Also highly recommended: Nearby Wakham Valley in Tajikistan, Ak Baital pass and M41 between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Riding horses over the mountains of Kyrgyzstan
This time we're on horseback! It actually happened! The first day of a three day trip to the most beautiful place on Earth.
This is the fourteenth part of a epic adventure spanning twenty vlogs, where we'll be exploring ancient buildings in Uzbekistan, navigating mountain passes in Tajikistan, riding on horseback at 3000m in Kyrgyzstan and so much more!
Incredible Views and Food in Kyrgyzstan | Travel Vlog
It was another beautiful day. Some incredible views and food in Kyrgyzstan.
Today, I'm going to keep the summary short because I'm off on a hike in a minute. But, today was another really good day here in Kyrgyzstan. We got up for a bit of a hike to look into the mountains, and we heading into a village for some traditional Kyrgyz food which was incredible.
I can't wait to get into the mountains a little bit more.
And, even though I'm not exactly a foodie or a food blogger, experiencing the food in a country is something I really enjoy.
There will be a bit of a gap in the travel vlogs here now because I'm off trekking through this beautiful Kyrgyz landscape.
And, on the treks I'm probably not having that amazing Kyrgyzstan food, but believe me, I'm having fun.
