Un vaste ensemble de bâtiments construits sur une colline au dessus des méandres du Doubs : voilà comment se présente cette citadelle. C’est Vauban, l’architecte militaire de Louis XIV, qui en a le mieux saisi l’intérêt stratégique du site.
La fortification des lieux qui date du XVIIe siècle passa par la construction de la Citadelle de Besançon qui ne prit pas moins de trente ans. En 1668, bastions, demi-lune, contrescarpes, courtines, tenailles… étaient achevés. Un an seulement après le rattachement de la Franche-Comté au Royaume de France, le rôle dissuasif du monument était pour le moins affirmé ! Depuis, la vocation des lieux a bien changé : trois musées y ont été implantés. Ainsi peut-on, aujourd’hui, y visiter le Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation, le Musée comtois, et le Muséum d’histoire naturelle composé d’un zoo, d’un aquarium, d’un insectarium, d’un noctarium et d’un parcours de l'évolution. Dans l’Espace Vauban, on célèbre le génie du créateur de la citadelle.

The Citadel of Besançon is a 17th-century fortress in Franche-Comté, France. It is one of the finest masterpieces of military architecture designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The Citadel occupies 11 hectares (27 acres) on Mount Saint-Etienne, one of the seven hills that protect Besançon, the capital of Franche-Comté. Mount Saint-Etienne occupies the neck of an oxbow formed by the river Doubs, giving the site a strategic importance that Julius Caesar recognised as early as 58 BC.
The Citadel overlooks the old quarter of the city, which is located within the oxbow, and has views of the city and its surroundings. The fortification is well preserved. Today it is an important tourist site (over a quarter of a million visitors per year) due both to its own characteristics and because it is the site of several museums.
These museums include a museum of the Resistance and deportation, a museum focusing on traditional life in Franche-Comté and the region's archeological history, and a museum of natural history that includes a zoo, an insectarium, an aquarium, vivariums, a noctarium, a climatorium, a pedagogical exhibit on evolution, botanical gardens, and a children's farm. There is also a restaurant and shops. On 7 July 2008, UNESCO listed the Citadel, together with nearby Fort Griffon, as a World Heritage Site. Since 1942, the French Ministry of Culture has listed the Citadel as a Monument historique
In Gallo-Roman times the promontory on which the citadel sits was already used as an acropolis. A wall enclosed a temple, probably dedicated to Jupiter Capitolinus. (Reference to the Roman history of the town is preserved in the town's arms, which show an eagle clasping two Roman columns in its claws.) The fortifications were renovated during the Middle Ages and again in the 16th century.
Between 1668 and 1672, the Spaniards started to construct a modern citadel on the site. Some of the buildings they constructed were incorporated into the subsequent enlargement of the Citadel. The Royal Front (Front meaning bastion or enclosure), and the Relief Front, both include buildings that the Spaniards erected.
The Citadel is built on top of a large syncline on a rectangular field crossed across its width by three successive bastions (enclosures, or fronts) behind which extend three plazas. The whole is surrounded by walls covered by circular paths and punctuated by watchtowers and sentry posts. The walls are up to 15 to 20 metres (49 to 66 ft) high with a thickness between 5 and 6 metres (16 and 20 ft).

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vauban's 17th century masterpiece, the Besançon Citadel, is considered to be one of the finest in France. The fortifications cover 11 hectares and lie more than 100 metres above the old town sitting in a loop of the River Doubs. The site is encircled by ramparts topped by walkways and punctuated with watchtowers and bartizans. The walls are up to 20 metres high and 5 to 6 metres thick. The Citadel offers visitors spectacular views over the old town of Besançon and the surrounding hills.

Besançon is the capital of the department of Doubs and the former capital of Franche-Comté, a region in eastern France close to the border with Switzerland. In 2013, Besançon had a population of 116,952.
Once proclaimed the first green city of France, it has been labeled a Town of Art and History since 1986. Since 2008, the Citadel of Besançon has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city has one of the most beautiful historic centers of any major town in France. A broad horse-shoe of the river Doubs, la Boucle, encircles the old town, while Vauban's imposing Citadelle blocks off the neck. The historic center presents a remarkable ensemble of classic stone buildings, some dating back to the Middle Ages and others to the Spanish Renaissance. Among its most visited historic monuments are: several Roman remains, the 16th-century Palais Granvelle, Vauban's citadel (Citadel of Besançon) (this wil be the subject of one of my next videos), the Cathedral of St. Jean, several Spanish Renaissance-style buildings, the Église de la Madeleine, and the river frontage.

Besançon is a city in eastern France, near the border with Switzerland. The old city center lies in a horseshoe bend on the Doubs River, dominated by the hilltop Citadel of Besançon. This sprawling 17th-century fortress is home to museums and a zoo. At the foot of the hill, Besançon Cathedral has a unique 70-dial astronomical clock that indicates sunrise and sunset, tides in French ports and eclipses.
Besancon is the capital of the department of Doubs and of the Franche-Comté region in eastern France, close to the border with Switzerland. Once proclaimed first green city of France, it has been labeled a Town of Art and History since 1986. Since 2008, Besançon's Vauban citadel has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Besançon is located in the north-east quarter of France on the Doubs River. It is about 325 kilometres (202 miles) east of the national capital of Paris, 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of Dijon in Burgundy, 125 km (78 mi) northwest of Lausanne in Switzerland, and 100 km (62 mi) southwest of Belfort in Franche-Comté. It is located at the edge of the Jura Mountains.
Besancon is famous for its microtechnology and watch industries. It is host of the biannual Micronora trade fair, one of Europe's major events in the field of microtechnologies. The city has a little-known specialty, automatic ticketing machines for car parking, airports, date stamping. The watch industry, for which Besançon remains the French capital, endured a major crisis in the 1970s when the advent of quartz watches from Asia knocked out the traditional watch industry in the space of just a few years. The famous Lip affair epitomizes the industrial crisis. LIP is to this day the name of one of Besançon's most prestigious brands of watches. Refusing to let their factory close, the workers set up a cooperative to run it. The action produced a lot of notoriety and sympathy for the workers but also resulted in branding Besançon as a city of the radical left.
UNESCO added the Besancon citadel, the city walls and Fort Griffon to its list of World Heritage Sites in 2008, as part of the Fortifications of Vauban group. Some older military architecture has also survived. There is a cylindrical, 15th-century tower near the Porte Notre-Dame, the southern gate of the city. The Porte Rivotte, a 16th-century gate, has two round towers. The citadel houses the Museum of the French Resistance and Deportation.

Victor Hugo, Charles Nodier et les frères Lumière y sont nés ; sa citadelle, conçue par Vauban, est inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco et des vestiges de l'époque gallo-romaine subsistent çà et là : Besançon, la capitale comtoise, est un livre d'histoire à ciel ouvert. Elle demeure aussi une ville culturelle de première importance avec un festival de musique de renommée internationale et un muséum d'histoire naturelle qui abrite fauves et espèces en voie de disparition.
