ITINERARY - TRAVELLING WITH KIDS IN MEXICO (PART 2)
Week 3 – La Paz & Mexico City
La Paz – Day 1-4
After a sleepless night (its was very noisy outside our hotel) we packed up and drove to La Paz. Another hour away, on highway Mexico 19 and 1, the drive was pretty pleasant and arriving in La Paz was literally a breath of fresh air. Driving along the Malecon (waterfront) is lovely, on one side the water and on the other side shops and restaurants. We stayed towards the end of the Malecon at Hotel Pekin, cheap and cheerful with a laundromat conveniently located up the road! Walking out of our hotel and facing the waterfront was a treat every time. As we had a car, being located on the end of the Malecon was not really an issue.
Balandra Beach
This beach is supposedly the most common however are timing was impeccable (for us anyway) as the main tourist season had just ended so nowhere was particularly busy. Balandra beach was a 20min drive from the main old side of La Paz. Its fantastic for kids as the water is clear and really shallow, so you can relax while they play. Make sure you bring water and snacks as there was only one little food truck selling fresh fruit when we visiting in April 2018. En route to Balandra Beach are a few other nice secluded beaches but the one that had restaurants and toilets was called El Tosoro.
Espiritu Santo
Ahhhh this was the highlight of our trip and the main reason for our trip to La Paz. Swimming with the Sea Lions in Espiritu Santo. We took a boat from the ferry port to the Rocks where the Sea Lions live. It was a cool, scenic ride for about two hours but totally worth it. The Sea Lions were passive and you could see the females tending to their babies on the rocks. We got into the water and swam around the big rocks. Lucky for us, the Sea Lions were happy to swim around us and even Emiliana got to experience it. The excursion included a light lunch, drinks and snacks. The cost was, adults, $55 (£40) and children aged 5 and up $30 (£20).
We were sad to say bye bye to La Paz but know that we will return some day!
Mexico City – Day 4-7
A short flight and a stark contrast to La Paz, landed us in Mexico City! The hustle and bustle, pollution and traffic was our first impressions. We felt a little vulnerable as it was our first time without a car and read about the airport being quite the mind field. But after a bit of reading online, we managed to get a taxi for 230pesos (£9) to our our hotel in the Historic District of Mexico City. The streets were super busy and as we drove through the Zocalo (main square) there were a lot of police all holding guns. This was a little overwhelming but we soon found out that there was an International Cultural Festival starting in 2 days and the stalls were being set up in the Zocalo, hence security was required.
We stayed at the Hotel Templo Mayor which was literally a stone throw away from the Ruins of Templo Mayor. We dumped our stuff in the hotel and headed straight out to get dinner. We didn't feel safe as it was dark by now, we were in a new place and being surrounded by old buildings in the historic district made everything appear eery!
The next morning, we felt totally different, the sun was blazing, the street our hotel was on, was full to the brim with street vendors, selling everything from SD cards to bras, fidget spinners to baskets. You could literally buy anything you wanted on that street. We headed to the Zocalo and ate breakfast in the square at one of the top floor restaurants which overlooked the square. We got a birds eye view of the square including the Cathedral and Government Buildings.
