LABUK BAY PROBOSCIS MONKEY SANCTUARY - Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia
The Labuk Bay Proboscis Sanctuary is located at the centre of the mangrove forest along the coastal land near Samawang Village at Labuk Bay, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. From the airport in Sandakan, it is 38km away and takes about an hour to get there.
The Malay name for the species is “Monyet Belanda”. Proboscis monkeys are excellent swimmers. But swim only when necessary and for pleasure. The proboscis monkeys are only found in certain parts of Borneo. The monkeys inhabit forests newer coastal swamps or those containing rivers and lakes.
The only place in the world where proboscis monkeys occur is the Island of Borneo in South-East Asia. And they are not even found throughout all of Borneo. They are forest-dwellers and limited mainly to coastal swamp forests next to large river. The calls of the proboscis monkey were also a subject of praise. In 128, the then curator of the Sarawak Museum, Eric Mjoberg, wrote that “the enormous nose is a sounding board that strengthens and deepens the male’s vocal powers… The sound is deep and nasal, strongly reminiscent of the bass viol. Possibly too, there is some aesthetic touch in it, for the females find the sound attractive and crowd round their musically gifted leader.”

Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is located within an oil palm estate about 38 kilometres from Sandakan Town . Today Labuk Bay is home to around 150 free ranging proboscis monkeys .Feeding takes place at Platform A at 9.30 am and 2.30 pm and at Platform B at 11.30 am and 4.30 pm. At most feeding times groups of proboscis monkeys descend from the nearby forest and mangroves and head to the wooden platform for a free meal. The staff feed the monkeys beans, cucumbers and pancakes.

Menarik Di Sandakan kembali di Tahun 2019 dengan episod pertama Menarik Di Sandakan. Kali ini kami akan bawakan anda ke Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary yang terletak di Batu 19, Sandakan iaitu lebih kurang 18 hingga 20 minit dari Pasar Tamu Gum-Gum, Sandakan. Yuran masuk bagi warganegara ialah RM15 (dewasa) dan RM5 (Kanak-kanak) manakala bagi bukan warganegara pula ialah RM60(dewasa) dan RM30 (Kanak-kanak). Sekiranya anda ingin membawa masuk kamera, yuran akan dikenakan sebanyak RM10. Terdapat dua Platform yang terdapat di sini iaitu Platform A dan Platform B. Untuk pengetahuan anda, Viewing time di Platform A ialah pada 9.30am dan 2.30pm manakala Viewing time di Platform B pula pada 11.30am dan 4.30pm. Tucked in the mangrove forests of Samawang, this 400-acre park is home to a particularly distinctive species of primate. The proboscis monkeys are native to Borneo, and are named for their long, protruding noses. While you can’t directly interact with the monkeys—they are wild animals after all—these potbellied critters come out in force during feeding time. Often, they gather around the pedestrian viewing platforms to eat and socialize with one another.
During Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary sightseeing, the monkeys are the stars of the show, but they aren’t alone. You might also see egrets, otters, and crocodiles, among other animals.

蘋果第七代遇上馬來西亞國寶長鼻猴
长鼻猴，一种猴科濒危动物，长相异常奇特，它们的鼻子大得出奇，其中雄性猴子随着年龄的增长鼻子会越来越大，最后形成一个又大又长的鼻子，也因此得名“长鼻猴”。作为世界濒危保护动物，长鼻猴总数也只有几千只，在马来西亚沙巴和沙捞越的沿海红树林及河流两岸，时常可以见到群居的长鼻猴，但只有在沙巴山打根市的拉卜湾长鼻猴保护区，才可以最近距离的观赏到这种珍惜动物。
拉卜湾长鼻猴保护区位于沙巴山打根拉卜湾的Sumawang村。占地600公顷的保护区内生活着300多只野生猴子。保护区也是唯一能够近距离观察长鼻猴的地方。此行有幸来到山打根拉卜湾长鼻猴保护区，了解长鼻猴这种奇特动物。
从山打根市驱车40分钟左右可以到达拉卜湾长鼻猴保护区。刚进保护区就发现几只灰色的小猴子，个头比较小，但对人相当警惕，一看就是野生猴子。当时心里一阵激动，以为是发现长鼻猴了，没想向导说这只是长尾猴。
长鼻猴在马来西亚被认为是世界上最帅的猴。大大的眼睛，长长的鼻子，炫酷的发型，还有那一身光滑软顺的皮毛。每只猴子看上去都是那么的干净整洁，感觉是经过精心打理的。
长鼻猴是目前唯一发现的不属于反刍亚目却能够反刍（反刍俗称倒嚼，是指进食经过一段时间以后将半消化的食物从胃里返回嘴里再次咀嚼）的物种。它的肚子中有着一个很大的、袋状的胃，与反刍动物的胃十分近似，在胃中生存着大量可以发酵食物的多种微生物，使长鼻猴能够消化含有大量纤维素的植物叶子。
此外，长鼻猴还有一奇特的地方，它们不能吃甜食，一但吃了带糖分的食物就会危及生命，所以千万别给它们投喂食物。长鼻猴胃中有能够分解毒素的微生物，万一吃到有毒的食物，会在被吸收进入血液以前就被微生物分解而失效。
除了这些，长鼻猴还有另外一个非常显著的特征：雄性长鼻猴的性器官呈鲜红色，而且总是处于勃起状态，通常猴群中的猴王此特征最为明显。据说猴王必须二十四小时保持“金枪不倒”，一旦疲软，猴王地位就有可能不保。
长鼻猴的社会群体比其它大多数灵长类动物的群体变化的速度要快得多，每过一段时间，一个群体中的成员就将发生一些变化。在保护区内住着两大群体，一群是由一只雄性猴王带着一大帮母猴，据说整个保护区内的母猴都跟着同一猴王
难怪这猴王必须二十四小时保持“金枪不倒”，要照顾这么多母猴也不是件容易的事。你是不是有些羡慕这个猴王了？不过我看到的猴王好像有些无精打采，估计精力有限。
而其余年青雄猴会自发组合成一个新的群体，称为“纯雄性群体”，大多以它们中间的一只年龄较大但仍未成年的雄兽为首。它们时常会去挑战猴王的地位，所以保护区内猴子打架是很平常的事，据说会打到头破血流。

Went here from Sandakan by Uber for 37.2 MYR (7.55 €), because it's really remote area without a public transport. Our way back was much worse, it's so remote, you have barely a mobile phone signal, so no Uber, no Grab. Only one lonely taxi within a kilometres. Guess what? For 90 MYR (18.27 €) to Sandakan! We recommend you to go there with some other backpackers to share the transport cost, just like we've taken 2 German friends.
Entry fee is not cheap at all, 60 MYR (12.18 €) per person plus 10 MYR (2.03 €) photography. BUT, all this was worthy, because these monkeys are so awesome! :3

The Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary offers another perfect Proboscis monkeys observation spot for any tourist who wants to have a closer look at these very special monkeys and do not have the time to travel too far away to watch them.
The Sanctuary is located at the centre of the mangrove forest along the coastal land near Samawang Village at Labuk Bay, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. From the airport in Sandakan, it is 38km away and takes about an hour to get there. Part of the trip will be through the graveled roads and jeep tracks of plantation estates. To get there, travel along Jalan Labuk and turn off to SPS 3 at the junction between KM 31 & KM 32 (apposite to the Consolidated Farm (Sabah) Sdn. Bhd.) The Sanctuary is located 15km along gravel road from here.
For those who love to watch these unique primate not found elsewhere in the world is a “Must See”. It would definitely gives you one of the most exhilarating and memorable experience observing the Proboscis monkeys both young and adult leaping from tree to tree and eventually down to feed on young leaves and plants. The leaping act is superb, fast, steady, stylish and perfect.
The proboscis monkey is found only on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It prefers to live in the mixed diterocarp-kerangas forests, mangrove forests and lowland forests near fresh water and rivers. They live almost exclusively in mangrove forests, but can also be found in lowland rainforests. It depends on the mangroves near river edges for resting and sleeping. They avoid deforested areas and avoid human settlements.
This elusive monkey belongs to the Asian langurs. They are the only member of the Nasalis genus.
