The Leh–Manali Highway is a 490 km (300 mi) long highway in northernmost India connecting Leh, the capital of the union territory of Ladakh, and Manali in Himachal Pradesh state. It is open for only about four and a half months in a year, between May or June, when the snow is cleared, and mid-October, when snowfall again blocks the high passes. It connects the Manali valley to the Lahaul and Spiti and Zanskar valleys in Ladakh.
The Leh–Manali Highway was designed and built and is maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) of the Indian army. It supports the heaviest army vehicles.
More plains (or Moray plains) is a plateau on the Leh–Manali Highway. It occupies 40 km of the highway between Leh and Sarchu. The plateau has an average elevation of 4,800 metres. The road is flanked by beautiful mountains on both sides. At some places, it runs along the Sumkhel Lungpa River, featuring stunning sand and rock natural formations.
The plain area starts after covering around 4 km uphill road from Pang towards Tanglang La pass. The road is mostly on the plain for around 30–35 km, before it again starts to rise to Tanglang La. This area is a major attraction to bikers heading towards Leh from Manali. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) of Indian Army is converting the road to two lanes, one in each direction.

Khardung La; World's highest motorable pass; India; Jammu; Kashmir; highest vehicle-accessible pass
Khardung La means Khardung Pass, la means pass in Tibetan is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The local pronunciation is Khardong La or Khardzong La but, as with most names in Ladakh, the Romanized spelling varies.
The pass on the Ladakh Range lies north of Leh and is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. The Siachen Glacier lays part way up the latter valley. Built in 1976, it was opened to public motor vehicles in 1988 and has since seen many automobile, motorbike and mountain biking expeditions. Maintained by the Border Roads Organisation, the pass is strategically important to India as it is used to carry supplies to the Siachen Glacier.
The elevation of Khardung La is 17,582 ft. Local summit signs and dozens of stores selling shirts in Leh incorrectly claim that its elevation is in the vicinity of 18,379 ft. and that it is the world's highest motorable pass. An explanation that has been proposed for the error is that the summit sign inherited the altitude of the original mule track through the pass.
Khardong La is historically important as it lies on the major caravan route from Leh to Kashgar in Central Asia. About 10,000 horses and camels used to take the route annually, and a small population of Bactrian camels can still be seen at Hunder, in the area north of the pass. During World War II there was an attempt to transfer war material to China through this route.
Khardung La is 39 km by road from Leh. The first 24 km, as far as the South Pullu check point, are paved. From there to the North Pullu checkpoint about 15 km beyond the pass the roadway is primarily loose rock, dirt, and occasional rivulets of snow melt. From North Pullu into the Nubra Valley, the road is very well maintained (except in a few places where washouts or falling rock occur). Hired vehicles (two- and four-wheel-drive), heavy trucks, and motorcycles regularly travel into the Nubra Valley, though special permits may need to be arranged for travellers.
The claimed 18,380 feet signboard on top. The actual elevation is about 800 feet lower.
The 17,582 ft. elevation measure from hundreds of GPS surveys matches SRTM data, ASTER GDEM data, and Russian topographic mapping. It is broadly consistent with numerous GPS reports.
Khardung La is at times incorrectly cited as the highest vehicle-accessible pass in the world. A well-graded Indian military road visible on 2011 imagery on visual globe systems such as Google Earth reaches 18,406 ft. 250 meters west of the 18,192 ft. Mana Pass on the India-Tibet border. It connects with an equally well-constructed, slightly lower Chinese military road based on SRTM data at posting intervals of 30 meters. There are also higher motorable passes at Suge La, west of Lhasa, 17,815 feet, and Semo La 18,258 feet, between Raka and Coqen in Central Tibet.
GPS and SRTM data confirms these elevations; the latter was measured by an expedition supported by the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia, Spain.
Vehicles have been driven over the 18,314 ft, Marsimik La, in the Indian Karakoram to the northeast of Khardung La, but it is debatable whether this pass should be considered to be motorable.
The road is closed from approximately October to May due to snow and is often subject to long delays due to traffic congestion on narrow one-lane sections, washouts, landslides, and road accidents.

The Siachen Glacier is a glacier located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayas at about 35.421226°N 77.109540°E, just northeast of the point NJ9842 where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends.
Siachen (white) in a map of Indian-administered Kashmir Siachen Glacier lies in the Karakoram range. Its snout is less than 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of the Ladakh Range.
Ladakh is a region in Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir that currently extends from the Kunlun mountain range to the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent.
Khardung La is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The local pronunciation is Khardong La or Khardzong La but, as with most names in Ladakh, the romanised spelling varies.
Nubra is a tri-armed valley located to the north east of Ladakh valley. Diskit the capital of Nubra is about 150 km north from Leh town, the capital of Ladakh district, India. Local scholars say that its original name was Ldumra.

Beautyfull khardung la in JAMMU & KASHMIR, India
Khardung La Pass needs no introduction. It is widely, but incorrectly, believed to be the highest motorable pass in the world, located at a little over 17,000 feet above sea level. The pass is about 40 km from the town of Leh, and an important destination for those seeking adventure. Adventure seekers come here for a thrilling mountain biking experience and a road trip. The views you get from this amazing mountain pass are just breathtaking. The pass also holds strategic importance for India’s defense strategy, for it serves as the route for military supplies and other essentials.
KANG LA PASS , GREAT HIMALAYAN RANGE MIYAR LAHOUL / ZANSKAR / LADAKH JAMMU KASHMIR , 5470 METERS
KANG LA PASS is a tough mountain pass connecting the beautiful MIYAR VALLEY OF UDAIPUR , LAHOUL SPITI with the ZANSKAR / LADAKH VALLEY OF J&K . KANG LA is a very long and a tough mountain pass which involves gentle and a very long walk across the MIYAR VALLEY / INNER THAN PATTAN with wonderful meadows, high peaks covered with snow , glaciers and high passes leading to PANGI , BHAGA and ZANSKAR VALLEY . The meadows soon give way to moraines which takes the best out a trekker. Then there is the 35 Kms long MIYAR GLACIER where one has to walk endlessly. High camps on glaciers are inevitable . The trek gets dangerous when the glacier gives way to highly crevassed zone where one has to rope up for safety. At a height of 5470 meters KANG LA Pass is some challenge but the efforts are equally. This pass offers wide views of GREAT HIMALAYAN RANGE and ZANSKAR RANGE . The descent to ZANSKAR valley is long . The trek ends when one reaches the road head at Muney near Padum
Truck accident at Zoji La Pass - Jammu and Kashmir
Truck accident on the Zoji La pass of Indian National Highway 1 between Srinagar and Leh. It lies in the western section of the Himalayan mountain ranges.
Around 3528 m (11, 649 ft) above the sea level, the pass is 9 kms from Sonamarg and is an important link between Ladakh and Kashmir. This pass is considered to be the second highest pass after Fotu La on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. At the peak of the winter season, most of the times, it becomes inaccessible but the Border Roads Organization (BRO) works to extend traffic in most of the time of the year. The Beacon Force is that unit of the BRO, which takes care of clearing and maintaining the road during winter season.
At the time of the Indo-Pakistani War in 1947, this pass was seized by the Pakistani raiders in 1948 while they were in the wake of capturing Ladakh. Later on 1st November, Zojila pass was captured by Indian forces under Operation Bison.
Once you reach the pass, you are going to have an amazing view of the mighty Himalayan mountains, which makes the ride worth. This pass witnesses the heaviest snowfall during the winters and thus, remains closed to traffic for around six months in a year. This 434 kms long highway stretch is the lifeline of Ladakh. After Kargil war in 1999, the government paced-up the construction of the road due to its strategic importance.

ABOUT LEH LADAKH
Ladakh is a mountainous region in the disputed northwest Jammu and Kashmir area in north India and in the area known as the Trans-Himalaya, (the lands beyond the Himalaya: Tibet, Xinjiang and northern Pakistan). It's slightly smaller than Scotland, the settled population live between 2700m and 4500m, and nomadic encampments even higher, and it's the largest and the least populated region of Jammu and Kashmir. The people are a mixture of Buddhist and Muslim 50% of each. Buddhists are the majority in the east close to the Chinese border and a slight majority overall while Muslims have the majority in the north and west. Travellers are likely to see more of the Buddhists as the majority of the tourist attractions are in the east and directly related to Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Khardung La ( Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir ) - World's highest motorable pass by mountain bike
40 km downhill by mountain bike from Khardung La to Leh !!!
Roadtrip - The world's most dangerous road - Pangi via Kishtwar
On 1st November, we started our journey from Shimla to the remote Pangi valley in Chamba.
CORRECTION - As pointed out by our viewer Aman Sharma, Kishtwar is in Jammu Division and not in Kashmir Division. So we apologise for writing Kashmir.

The usual route via Saach pass was closed for the season, so we had to take the more longer and more dangerous route via Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir.
There is a 6km patch near Tyari that is so dangerous and rough, that you can't take a small car on it. It is so narrow that no busses and trucks drive on this road. The road after Tyari is so rough, that it took us 4 hours to cover the last 30kms.
Despite the dangerous patch the road crosses through some of the most untouched and beautiful parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal.
Day 1 - We drove from Shimla to Kihar in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.
Day 2 - We started early and reached Killar via the most dangerous road we ever drove through.
Day 3 - Drove to the village Hudan Bhatori at 3400m.
Day 4 - It started snowing in Pangi so we drove back via Pangi to Doda.
Day 5 - We started back to Chamba, but Padri jot was blocked by 2ft of snow. So we talked the JCB people of PWD to clear the road for us.
