Situated on the wonderful and greenish São Miguel Island, on the charming Azores Archipelago, the Fire Lagoon is the second largest lake in the Island, and also the highest one, classified in 1974 as a Natural Reserve.
Occupying an area of 1360 hectares, on the cauldron of asleep volcano that was formed at about 15.000 years, forming the great volcanic Água de Pau Mountain range, the Fogo Lake charms for its natural beauty and amazing dimension, reaching the 30 meters depth.
It is worth knowing these wonderful natural landscapes and also the amazing cauldron, where the walls achieve 300 metres unevenness. There are several pedestrian itineraries where one can better observe the very interesting fauna and flora so characteristic of this geological phenomenon.

Lagoa do Fogo ('Lake of Fire') is a crater lake in the center of the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. It is the highest lake on the island. Governmental regulation does not permit the construction around the lake.
Lagoa do Fogo is one of the largest of the waterbodies in the Azores, and occupies the central caldera of the Água de Pau Massif. The caldera is the youngest volcano on the island of São Miguel, formed approximately 15.000 years ago, resulting from the collapse at the top of the volcano, some 5000 years ago. The last eruption occurred in 1563.
Pico da Barrosa is a viewpoint near Lagoa do Fogo at 947 meters (3,107 feet) above sea level. It is the second highest mountain on São Miguel (the highest is Pico da Vara with 1108 m).

A sightseeing spot overlooking Lagoa do Fogo in Sao Miguel Island in the Azores. The lake was formed in the crater of a volcano. We got lucky with a sunny day and before our hike got a chance of a car tour around the lake. The views were wonderful and a strong wind kept things cool during our hike.

Abstieg im Krater zum Feuersee (Lagoa do fogo) Sao Miguel, Azoren
Der Feuersee, Lagoa do Fogo liegt etwas abgeschieden auf 575m Höhe in den Bergen von Sao Miguel hinter der Serra de Agua de Pau. Er ist vielleicht der Schönste aller Kraterseen auf den Azoren, doch hängen oft Wolken an den Kraterhängen. Dann bleibt die wahre Schönheit leider verborgen.
Das Gebiet ist nicht bewohnt und der südliche Teil des Sees steht unter Natur- und Vogelschutz. Hier gedeihen zahlreiche endemische Pflanzen. Die Ruhe wird hier nur durch Vogelgezwitscher unterbrochen.
Der Lagoa do Fogo liegt in einem noch komplett naturbelassenen Krater. Er ist noch relativ jung: erst 1563 ist er bei einem Ausbruch des Pico da Sapateira in dieser Form entstanden.
Den Sapateiro gibt es heute nicht mehr. Am 2. Juni 1563 nahm sein Ende seinen Lauf: mehrere Tage lang bebte die Erde. Der Berg spuckte Lavamassen und zerstörte viele Orte, darunter Ribeira Seca im Norden mit seinem inzwischen wieder gefundenen Brunnen. Die wenigen Überlieferungen schildern eine Weltuntergangsstimmung. Am Ende brach der Vulkan zusammen und die weite Caldeira des Lagoa do Fogo mit den steil aufragenden heute bewachsenen Rändern entstand.
In dem Kratersee gibt es neben zahlreichen Fischen auch Amphibien: so befinden sich in den seichten Seitentümpeln die Laichplätze des Iberischen Wasserfroschs (rana perezi) und des Alpen-Kammmolchs (triturus carnifex).
Von dem Parkplatz mit Aussichtspunkt an der Höhenstrasse führt ein zuweilen rutschiger Fußweg in einer knappen halben Stunde hinab. An schönen Tagen kann man in dem See mit dem glasklaren Wasser und Sandstrand auch baden.
Ein zweiter Aussichtspunkt liegt unterhalb des Pico da Barrosa (947m.) mit seinen Funkmasten. Hier erinnert eine Tafel an einen Flugzeugabsturz. Ein junger französischer Pilot war hier abgestürzt. Der Propeller soll daran erinnern.

LAGOA DO FOGO-SAO MIGUEL
Esta caldeira vulcânica, tal como o vulcão que lhe deu forma é a mais jovem da Ilha de São Miguel e ter-se-á formado há cerca de 15 000 anos. A sua configuração actual é resultado do último colapso, tido como importante e que ocorreu no topo do vulcão, há aproximadamente 5 mil anos. A última erupção data de 1563.
Esta lagoa, é também a mais alta da Ilha de São Miguel, facto que se deve a se encontrar no cimo de uma montanha cujo ponto mais alto se eleva a 949 metros. Localiza-se no topo do grande vulcão do Fogo, também conhecido como vulcão de Água de Pau. A caldeira tem forma de colapso tem forma elíptica e dimensões aproximadas de 3 x 2,5 km. As paredes desta caldeira chegam a atingir desníveis de 300 metros.
