Whale watching tour in Guerrero Negro, Mexico
Guerrero Negro, Mexico - Grey Whale watching - March 2016
I had an opportunity to visit Laguna Ojo de Liebre in Baha Mexico to check out mating Grey Whales in the lagoon. The whales migrate to a few lagoons on the pacific coast of the Baja peninsula each year to mate and to have their calves. Some of the whales come right up to the boats for human interaction. Its hard to imagine that not too long ago, these magnificent creatures were slaughtered by humans as they arrived for this annual migration. The area is also rife with other wildlife, including many species of birds.

Today's vlog begins with a wonderful cup of Chaiwala Chai as we wake up slowly and prepare for a big day of whale watching in Guerrero Negro at the nearby Ojo de Liebre. As two animal and wildlife lovers, today is an absolute dream come true!! We head out to the lagoon with a guide and spend the morning surrounded by the beautiful grey whales and their calves. These whales have recently migrated down from Alaska and come to Baja each year to birth their babies and nest while the young whales grow enough to travel in the open water. All we can say is WOW!! After an eventful morning with the whales, we head to a remote free campsite and spend the night eating vegan tacos and relaxing in our hammock.
We have loved living in a van (self converted sprinter van) for the last year and a half and while we enjoy spending time in Canada it can get a little cold throughout the winter. So, we've decided to hit the road and drive across the continent to enjoy some warmer weather in Baja Mexico. If our last trip to this country taught us anything... it's to expect the unexpected!!

Mexico whale watching at Kuyima
Gray whale watching in Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California Sur at Kuyima camp.
These are friendly whales in their natural habitat, they are playful and curious. They come from Alaska 3 months every year to a few spots in Baja California to breed in calm waters with no predators.
The Mexico government is protecting these whales and is very strict about how the watching is done. There is a maximum number of boats, and a limited time on every trip.
This is a once in a lifetime experience and you can do it too. Check kuyima.com

Aussie on KTM 690 in Baja! Day5 Part2 - San Ignacio To Whales To Guerrero Negro Part2
March 30, 2016 Day 5 Part 2 - WHALE WATCHING! - My dog Deacon, an Australian Shepherd, and I ride our KTM 690 Enduro over 1300 miles (2000+ Km) in 10 days as part of Fly-A To The Playa (Fly to the Beach). On this day we will travel 210 miles,15 of those in a boat. Part 1 is the 65 miles from Ricardo's Rice and Beans Hotel in San Ignacio to Laguna San Ignacio. The road is half paved and half graded sand. Great fun for Deacon and I, as we have not been getting much dirt in our ride. Part 2 is getting on a boat at Antonio's Ecotours to go whale watching and having lunch. Then, in the afternoon Part 3, we go back to San Ignacio, and Part 4 is taking the highway north to Guerrero Negro where we will spend the night at Hotel Terra Sal.

The best whale watching ever – Baja California, Mexico
Dreamlike pictures of gray whales from the Baja California, Mexico. They came right up to the rowing boat, once even a mother whale with his baby. Simply fascinating to watch these peaceful giants. Here you can see that these animals are strictly protected in Mexico.
The gray whale, a baleen whale, reaches lengths of 13 to 15 meters and a weight up to 34 tons. Such a giant can become up to 60 years old, as far as humans let him. It was in 1946 that the species was placed under protection and thus saved from die out.
On the Baja California, gray whales live quite close to the coast. One can approach with the small boats up to 30 m. Sometimes the whales swim right up to the boat, on their own. And play with one. The gray whales spend the summer in polar waters and move south in winter. The Eastern Pacific population hibernates off the coasts of California and Mexico.
Gray whales migrate up to 10.000 km, more than any other species of whale and mammal. They are slow swimmers with about eight kilometers per hour. They are usually found in smaller groups, are very social. It was thus possible to observe how sick or injured conspecifics were brought to the water surface for breathing.
