Adventure Journal - Kelleys Island, Ohio
Some of the best kept secrets of the Buckeye State are the series of Islands in Lake Erie. Home to unique animals, agriculture, geological formations, and much more, they're yet another reason to call Ohio home. I have grown quite fond of Kelleys Island in-particular through the passion displayed for it by my family. This video catalogs some of our adventures during the summer of 2013.

His business career began at the Haughton Elevator Company where he was employed from 1967-1977 when he joined Kerschner Elevator where he remained until 1984. In that year he founded his own elevator consultant company, John W. Blatt Elevator Consulting, Inc. which he owned and operated until he retired in 2007.
Well known and respected in the vertical transportation industry, John's consultancy was one of the leaders in the United States. He frequently taught and spoke at various conventions and seminars in the industry. Clients included major universities, hospitals, office buildings, apartments, housing authorities and factories throughout Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Florida, Michigan and other states. He also served on various committees and boards including the Board of Directors of Elevator U and the Board of the National Association of Vertical Transportation Professionals where he also served as Ethics Chairman. John was also a member of the National Assn. of Elevator Safety Authorities, the National Assn. of Elevator Contractors, and a qualified Elevator Inspector certified by ASME.
A resident of Put-in-Bay, OH, from 1984-2002, John served that community as mayor from 1996-2002. During his tenure, he led efforts to improve quality of life through increased law enforcement and other initiatives in the island community that attracts thousands of visitors every summer. He took great pride in attracting events to the island and enjoyed officiating at weddings and other significant events. As mayor, John established a scholarship fund for deserving graduates of Ottawa County high schools. The second K-9 John purchased was an import from the Czech Republic, Alex, who has served a number of local departments and is currently serving in Marblehead. John has also donated funds to local police departments to help fight the drug war. John's commitment to law enforcement was further demonstrated by his serving as Advisor to the Board of the African American Law Enforcement Agents Assn.
Returning to the mainland in 2002, John made Port Clinton, OH, his home so he could be near good friends and his beloved Lake Erie. In typical John Blatt fashion, he immediately became involved in and supportive of the community. He was a member of Historic Port Clinton where he was involved in putting on the annual Walleye Festival. John initiated the Education Tent and the educational events at the festival. He was also a member of the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce, the Catawba Island Club, and various other groups and activities.

6. The SS America 1898
This awesomely named ship was one of the victims of the Isle royale, previously mentioned. Built in 1898, it sank 30 years later in 1928, striking a reef and capsizing off the coast of the island. It had a bumpy history in this area of the great lakes and had a similar incident in 1924, the only difference being that she was refloated, repaired and returned to service. In 1927, she took some damage by colliding with another steamboat but would make it out alive. In 1928, she was on her normal route from the town of Duluth Minnesota when the captain decided to hand over the wheel to the first mate for 5 minutes until it hit a reef again, this time it would not be able to float again. A group of divers during the 1960’s attempted to raise the ship and put her in service as a museum ship unsuccessfully. Today you can still visit the SS America which is only sitting about 85 feet below the surface.
5. USS Keystone State
In November 1861, members of the Wisconsin militia were expecting a large shipment of weapons from the large ship called the USS Keystone state, but they never got their arms. This was an elaborate ship and was dubbed the Palace Steamers from it’s comfortable design. Certainly no ordinary cargo ship. With a crew of 33 people, it left Detroit and was set to land in Milwaukee but this never happened! The people who expected the delivery thought the ship just sort of vanished in mid air. Finally in 2013 the ship was found at the bottom of Lake Huron, near the city of Alpena. The scuba explorers who made the remarkable discovery, believe it was from a storm that hit the area, but this has not been proven. They unfortunately found no gold that was rumored to be on board nor the remains of the crew on board which lead many to speculate. Or did they...
4. SS Chester A. Congdon
This large steel freighter was one of the largest shipwrecks that took place in the early 1900’s and it was named after a lawyer and capitalist Chester Adgate Congdon. It sank in lake superior also near Isle royal and is still located at the bottom of the lake. It was set to deliver 380,000 bushels of wheat from Thunder Bay, Canada but was couldn’t see to well when fog filled the area. Luckily, all the crew was saved and about 20 percent of the cargo was retrieved but the wreck proved to lose a ton of money. The congdon was valued at over 1 million dollars which was the most expensive wreck up until that time at the great lakes.
3. Samuel P. Ely
Another schooner from the 19th century, the Samuel P, Ely was first launched in 1869 it often transported large amounts of iron ore and coal around the Great lakes region. It would often travel from Escanaba, Michigan to Cleveland, ohio. After about 28 years of service, in october of 1896, she traveled from Kelley’s Island in Ohio to Duluth minnesota carrying a large load of limestone. After dropping off the cargo, their next trip was to two harbors, minnesota. While the samuel P. Ely was being towed a storm came out of nowhere during the evening. The crew decided to drop anchor and see if they could ride it out but to no avail. The crew was able to escape drowning by climbing on to the rigging of the masts. A small sailboat was sent to rescue them and it took a total of 3 trips. It’s still in Lake superior to this day despite deterioration and erosion from scuba divers.
2.Sweepstakes Schooner
The sweepstakes schooner was a Canadian vessel that was constructed in Ontario in 1867. It was a double massed wooden ship that measured 119 feet in length and weighed about 218 tonnes. It was badly damaged off the coast of Cove Island in august of 1885 and was in need of quick repairs but it was already too late. The ship was transporting large amounts of coal and another ship was sent in the retrieve the cargo. In modern times, many describe as being remarkably well preserved despite it being made from wood. It currrently sits in lake huron only about 20 feet below. Despite the sweepstakes decaying a little more each year, it’s said that it’ss one of the best preserved 19th century great lake schooners of the great lakes and many people will visit the fathom five national marine park to come check it out.

Giants on the beach! An untold Paranormal Great Lakes tale
CRYPTOZOOLOGISTS BEWARE! Information of an esoteric nature lead me to investigate rumors of giants, an ancient and terrible race, at large in the islands and south shores of Lake Erie. This came too late for inclusion into my indispensable book PARANORMAL GREAT LAKES. I do apologize for any maimings or loss of life that might have resulted...Okay, so it's more like an entry in a video contest that the Cleveland Museum of Natural History put on in connection with an exhibit on mythical beasts. Sort of my neglected-and-rejected-local-author desperate bid for attention; if anyone even thinks to include my books in their souvenir shop, have me as a guest speaker or notice my job resume before it goes to the office paper shredder I'll consider it a win. But the legends mentioned herein are indeed out there. Maybe I'll write them up in detail, minus the B-movie clips, someday under different circumstances.

Battle of Lake Erie 1813
Oliver Hazard Perry's victory over the Royal Navy squadron on 10 Sept 1813 caused the total surrender of all British vessels on the lake. It was the first of the two Royal Navy lake squadrons to surrender during the war. The victory was of dual importance. Realizing that Barclay could not support him any longer, Gen. Procter pulled back into Upper Canada, retreating and leaving Ft. Detroit to be re-captured by the surging American forces. Once the Americans had caught up with Procter and Tecumseh's forces they decisively defeated both of them at Thames, swinging the tide of the war in the region in favor of the US forces.
