In this episode we continue our Backpacking El Salvador series and we take a day trip from El Salvador's capital San Salvador and arrive at Lake Ilopango. An active volcanic lake. Unfortunately things didn't go according to plan and we suffered a diving emergency. Luckily we had great training and a positive outcome to what could have been a disaster.
We got to see how Pupusas - the national dish of El Salvador are made . We visit the Multi Plaza - one of the main shopping centres in San Salvador.

Lake Ilopango (2019) - BRITISH Couple Backpacking El Salvador
Lake Ilopango is a short drive away from El Salvador's capital city San Salvador. We visit this wonderful lake as part of our Backpacking El Salvador series.
Lake Ilopango is a volcanic lake, created when a huge eruption happened in around 410 AD and it was about 20 times as much as the eruption of Mount Saint Helens. Today although there is still activity below the water (see our diving video on lake Ilopango) now the lake is calm, with clear waters and local either swim or fish in it. It makes a great day out from the city of San Salvador.

EXPERIENCIA:
En esta ocasión decidimos ir y visitar el lago natural más grande de El Salvador, el Lago de Ilopango. Llegamos al turicentro Apulo, donde parqueamos el vehículo y comenzamos a caminar por el malecón. En el camino nos ofrecieron el tour para la isla, antes de ir al tour, decidimos ir a conocer un poquito más de este lindo lugar. Fuimos a conocer el estadio de fútbol playa, que tiene este bonito turicentro. Fuimos a preguntar precios de los jetskis y a ver los comedores y la piscina con la que cuenta el turicentro. Luego subimos al faro y se logra ver una linda vista del lago de Ilopango y a su vez puedes ver todo malecón. De ahí Danilo se quedó en el faro, mientras Moris comenzó a hacer las tomas del drone, el lago es súper bonito y está entre montañas, lo que hace que las tomas de drone se miraran súper chivas. Ya después de grabar, decidimos tomar la lancha hacia la isla, nuestro guía don Toño, fue el que nos llevó hacia la isla de los patos. Nos comentó que te puedes bañar y que también puedes subir al tope de la isla, es una caminata de 3 minutos o menos. Incluso nos comentó que para cuando son las fiestas de la zona, hacen una misa en esta isla y que todos los lancheros llevan sus lanchas hacia la isla. Ya en la isla también hicimos tomas del drone, donde se aprecia la isla y sus alrededores. El tour te deja que estés 30 minutos en la isla y luego te lleva de regreso al turicentro.

Si usted viaja en autobús, diríjase a la Avenida España y ahí debe abordar la ruta 15, la cual lo llevará directamente al parque.

INFORMACIÓN DEL LUGAR:
Apulo significa en náhuatl: Lugar que se hunde en el agua. Este sitio se encuentra ubicado en el Cantón Dolores Apulo, jurisdicción de Ilopango en el departamento de San Salvador. El lago de Ilopango de 72 Km cuadrados, está entre los departamentos de San Salvador, Cuscatlan y La Paz. En esta zona la flora se clasifica como selva baja caducifolia, ya que los especímenes existentes son típicos de esa formación vegetal.
El lago de Ilopango es de origen volcánico su cráter se ubica justamente al fondo del lago. La caldera de Ilopango se formo como resultado de una erupción cataclísmica, produciendo enormes flujos piroclásticos que destruyeron diferentes ciudades mayas.
Estudios más recientes sugieren que la erupción fue aún más grande, fechándola en el 535 d. C. y situando la expulsión de tefra en alrededor de 84 km³. Estos nuevos datos incluso sugieren que esta erupción fue la causante del cambio climático en los años 535 y 536, el cual, sumado a las muertes directas y otros efectos diversos en todo el mundo, podría llegar a ser considerada como la catástrofe volcánica más grande en la historia de la humanidad.
Erupciones posteriores formaron diferentes domos de lava en el lago y en sus riberas. La única erupción histórica ocurrió en 1879–1880 y produjo un domo de lava dentro del lago, formando las Islas Quemadas.
A fines de 1789 se sintieron temblores en la región y en enero de 1880 el nivel del lago subió considerablemente, hubo ruinas en los caseríos inmediatos y grandes derrumbes y agrietamientos en todas partes.
En este lago, el 5 de julio de 1970 el ilusionista Francis Fanci fue sumergido dentro de un baúl del cual salió después de treinta segundos. Por otro lado, en 2004 Mattew Hatfield Knight, hijo mayor del dueño del consorcio internacional de zapatos deportivos Nike, murió de un ataque al corazón mientras practicaba buceo.

In this episode we visit lake Coatepeque in El Salvador. This lake turns a mystical blue colour once a year and we were luck that it did so on our last day in El Salvador.
This is our last day in El Salvador and we have had the best time time and want to thank the people of El Salvador for making us feel so welcome - we'll be back one day !

EL SALVADOR 2017: DISFRUTANDO DEL LAGO DE ILOPANGO
Lago de origen volcánico situado a 16 Km de San Salvador, compartido por los departamento de San Salvador, Cuscatlán y La Paz. Es el lago natural más grande de El Salvador cuyo origen fue el resultado de una erupción cataclísmica ocurrida en el siglo V d.C. y que destruyó varias ciudades mayas.
Algunos estudios sugieren que la erupción ocurrió cerca del año 535 a.C y que fue de tal dimensión que pudo ser la causante del cambio climático en esa época. Los efectos del evento afectaron todo el mundo y por lo cual podría se considerada la catástrofe volcánica más grande de la historia de la humanidad.
Erupciones posteriores dieron origen a diferentes domos de lava, algunos no lograron salir completamente a la superficie (Cerros hundidos), una de las más populares es la Isla de los patos.
El lago es una fuente de pesca para los pobladores, sus aguas provienen de varios ríos y una sola salida a través del río Jiboa.
Es el cráter de un antiguo volcán, presenta profundidades de hasta 230 mts y es excelente para el buceo. Tiene 72 Km cuadrados y una hermosa vista al atardecer. Es un lugar lleno de bellos lugares para descansar, yo lo he visitado en varias ocasiones y tengo muy buenos recuerdos de ello.
El lago posee una serie de islas llamadas “Islas Quemadas” ya que se formaron a causa de erupciones en la antigüedad y en dichas islas vive gente que trabaja de la pesca. Solo me queda decir que es un lugar fantástico para visitar, y un lugar que no olvidarás.
La Playa de Apulo es su principal atracción para turistas nacionales y extranjeros, su nuevo malecón turístico ofrece variedad de restaurantes populares con platos típicos, mariscos, carnes y aves, entre sus atracciones también está el nuevo estadio de futbol playa el cual se planea ser utilizado para el desarrollo de dicho deporte y atracción de campeonatos internacionales.

Air show enthusiasts from around Central America have flocked to Ilopango in El Salvador for the city's 9th annual air show. Many consider the event to be the best of its kind in the region--but it was certainly not for the faint of heart. At the two-day event, pilots flew through the air, performing death-defying tricks against the clear blue Salvadoran sky.
Pilots like Rich Pyro and Gary Wand, some of the best show pilots in the western hemisphere, amazed crowds as they barrel rolled and nose dived in several different plane models.

El Salvador is the smallest but densely populated (almost 6.4 Million)country in Central America. It is also known for volcanic activities and earthquakes.
The Most Visited places are Playa El Tunco, Suchitoto, Ruta de las Flores, Lake Ilopango, Play El Easteron and San Salvador, which is the capital of this country and direct connection to Mexico USA, Canada, Panama, Costa Rica and others. Most of the surfing lovers come to practice in El Tunco, the pacific is Majestic and its quite cheaper, not only that its safe and beautiful coastline city.
Salvadoran Colon was replaced in 2001 by the US dollar.
When I visited here nobody even guess that I am far away from Nepal, mostly in central America, for example Guatemala, Salvador, Honduras, people look like Nepali.
Perhaps this is the reason, having a look of Salvadoran, I don't belong to here but I wish to go there again and practice Surfing.
If you have valid US, Canada and Schengen visa only you can go to any consulate of Salvador to apply for the visa.
Flights from New York to San salvador are every day and frequent and even Cancun in Mexico
I have always a question to the authorities why even having visa for united States, we need visa for these 4 countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua- for Nepalese passports holders, these are the hardest countries to visit ) as most of the nations do not need
